With winter sneaking up on us, I repeat the mantra I said years ago, somewhere. "Far better to
ponder interesting wildlife behavior in the garden than to spend the
winter staring at dormant plants."

This morning I fed the birds as usual, and a flock of turkeys, maybe twenty or so, gathered in the yard to eat at the ground feeding areas.

There's one area where I put peanuts loose and in shells and critter seed mix to lure the squirrels and blue jays away from the feeders where smaller and less aggressive birds eat. The turkeys don't care for the peanuts in shells but they like the other feed types. The squirrels and blue jays tried to work around that by darting in and out and grabbing shells before the turkeys could attack.

After they'd finished eating, the young turkeys milled around nervously for a while before moving away from the yard. The young males in particular seem to do a lot of adolescent jousting when they're together in a group flock. Maybe they're practicing for the upcoming breeding season.

Both of these videos were taken from inside the house.
