What's your favorite comfort food
Comments (15)This thread reminded me of a time long ago, a cold, foggy, drizzly day in early May, in Bar Harbor. Thoroughly chilled from camping out and walking around slick Acadian rocks, late morning, we walked into a small restaurant on Main Street, ordered coffee and chose a table near the fireplace to warm up. The restaurant was nearly empty, being between breakfast and lunch times. On the menu was New England Clam Chowder, sounded good and warm and filling, so we each ordered a bowl. Enjoying the coffee and warmth, some time went by. Had some more coffee. We certainly had nowhere to go that would be better. Finally the waitress arrived with our chowder, apologizing for the delay. She explained that the chef had to shuck the clams and prepare the broth. When I looked down to my bowl, I was amazed to see it chock full of fresh long neck Ipswich clams, you know...the ones with the succulent bellies and chewy necks...surrounded by the creamiest, buttery ambrosia of a broth...not thick or starchy, but just thick enough to coat the spoon. Small chunks of potato, onions and parsley just accented the dozen or so whole tender clams lazing in the steaming bowl. That's real clam chowder. Well worth the wait. In fact I've waited maybe 30 years, ordered clam chowder many times at many restaurants since, but have never had anything even close to that experience. Thanks for bringing back that memory....See MoreShare your favorite apps to eat while you wait for the REAL food
Comments (17)Here are a few of my favourite appetizers: These little cocktail toasts with goat cheese and toasted walnuts are easy and very tasty. Just put a dollop of warm goat cheese on a cocktail toast, top with a toasted walnut and drizzle with olive oil. This tuna pate is addictive. Tuna Pate ========= Although this is a very easy appetizer that can be made earlier in the day, it is also a very rich because of all of the butter. One of my favourites. 2 (6 ounces) cans white tuna drained 1 cup butter 2 Tablespoons chopped roasted red pepper (Homemade or bottled pimentos) 1 to 2 teaspoons capers fresh lemon juice 2 to 3 drops tabasco salt and pepper Puree tuna and butter in processor Add chopped red pepper, capers, lemon juice, salt, pepper and tabasco. Process on pulse until the capers and red peppers are finely minced. Taste and adjust seasoning. Pack into decorate serving bowl and cover and refrigerate. When ready to serve remove a bit early from fridge so that the pate has a change to soften just slightly. Serve with toasted pita triangles Cut Plain or whole wheat pitas into triangles. Separate each triangle and place on cookie sheet. Brush with melted butter or margarine. Bake at 350F until crisp and golden. Be careful not to burn. Remove and let cool. Serve triangles surrounding tuna pate OR a big batch of these Firecracker Shrimps? Firecracker Shrimp ================== Source: Week of Menus Blog 2 lbs of jumbo shrimp, legs removed, de-veined and butterflied (see step by step photos below) 1/4 cup of butter, softened (softer the better) 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup chopped cilantro 1/4 cup chopped red pepper (red bell pepper is fine, but if you like SPICE, use a red chili pepper) 3 tablespoons of finely chopped garlic 1 tablespoon lime juice Sea salt and cayenne pepper(optional) for sprinkling Arrange oven rack so that it is closest to the heating element. Preheat oven to broil. Line sheet pan with foil. Place prepared shrimp evenly so that there is only a single layer and every shrimp will get maximum heat....See MoreIs your favorite fast food restaurant good for you?
Comments (7)You know I think you can choose to eat poorly anywhere including at home. When I clicked on the link the first page I saw was IHOP. They slammed it in the article saying it served 1300 calorie crepes! Well sure if you order them stuffed with fake fruit and cream cheese frosting. A crepe at IHOP is just 120 calories before topping. Two crepes with a little bit lingonberries and butter are under 300 calories. Nobody forces you to choose horrible sides at restaurants. Most place are happy to sub fruit, veggies or a small salad for the fries. I can eat pretty healthy most anywhere. I rarely order off the "diet" menu. I prefer to make my salads at home. Some of those diet plates and salads are a lot worse than a burger and fries. I make the meal I want fit my needs by requesting it my way....See MoreWhere would you go to eat a favorite food from childhood?
Comments (44)some of my fav's still around include hamburgers at Redamaks in New Buffalo MI and yes I do drive to MI from Chicago just for their hamburgers LOL. We used to have a summer place in New Buffalo MI and that place is THE place to go for lunch & dinner. I still always visit Teibels in Schereville IN when in NW IN seeing friends, I always have the Walleye grilled. My DH makes us stop at Zel's for barbeque sandwiches & plain pulled pork in Hammond IN and Schoops for hamburgers - he won't drive to MI LOL. House of Pizza in Hammond IN when I'm in the mood for square cut, thin pizza. A few fav's long gone include Puntillo's Restaurant, growing up we used to eat fish (either lake perch or breaded cod) there every Friday, they closed up in the mid 80's :-( Ralphs Pizza we used to get pizza delivered on Sat nite or Sundays for Cubs or Bears games when I was little. There was also an awesome DQ around the corner from my house, we used to bug my dad to walk over there and get us a bag of dilly bars in the summer, when we were too little to go by ourselves LOL. Food was very different back then, I rarely find a place to go out to eat that is as good as the restaurants I grew up with :-( ~ liz...See More- 10 years ago
