any votes for red delicious?
Comments (15)I have one that's been in the ground since '91. It was another Stark Bros mislabel. My planting map and label had it as apricot, so after a few years and nothing happening, I assumed I must need another apricot and put another one close by. I wasn't paying much attention to things fruit tree related back then, as they were all new and I'd not had fruit trees before so the concept to identify by leaf, etc was foreign to me. I just assumed things took awhile to make a fruit. Well, a couple more years go by and there are apples. RD apples. They are by a long shot my least favorite of the apples I have, but they are several times better than anything store bought. I think the key is to leave them on the tree longer than you think. They can look real deep red and ripe quite awhile before they really are in my opinion. But still, I would not own one if it wasn't an accident....See MoreWeird food combinations
Comments (68)I never pass on a good sushi bar, I make my own ceviche but only with seafood that either we caught or that I know was freshly caught. I prefer that my oysters be just steamed enough to crack open a tiny bit, which means that they will still be raw. Again, they must be fresh from the water. My favorite appetizer is beef carpaccio, which I will often have served as an entree, after a soup and salad. (I enjoyed it earlier this week at a great restaurant in Chattanooga!) I used to like peanut butter and bacon sandwhiches, but I don't think of that as particularly wierd....See MoreWhat are the weird or just bad things u you grew up eating?
Comments (54)Anne, most of my water consumption was from the garden hose, because if I went into the house Grandma would find me a "chore" to do. I didn't go inside. We never had Kool Aid except at Bible School, that was a huge treat. We had cows so we drank milk. Period. I remember going with Mother to my uncle's gas station and splitting a bottle of Grape Nehi with my brother and sister, so that was probably 3 ounces each, LOL. Rita, I still eat baked bean sandwiches, love them. If Grandma made baked beans my breakfast was invariably baked beans spread on a slice of bread and then folded over. We didn't usually buy hot dog buns, but if we had them, I'd use that instead. I do like liver, Grandma fried it with bacon and onions, and always served with mashed potatoes, it was one of my favorite meals. Now the liver usually becomes dog treats, unfortunately. And I can my own chicken, so I always have some on hand. Annie...See MoreWhat is "weird" food you eat as an adult?
Comments (100)I know different people and different cultures eat different things, by choice and by necessity so to put a "weird" term on it, I don't always agree. Different? Sure. Unusual? Yup. I can't really think of what I'd call "weird" that I eat because to me, it's normal. I ate fries and gravy long before it became popular around here. Never got into ketchup that much. Much rather have a bbq sauce than ketchup and I've made my own version of what some places call "fry sauce", which is bbq sauce, ranch dressing and hot sauce. At home I'll mix in some seasoning, in a restaurant, it's usually just salt & pepper available so I generally pass. I think the strawberries & pasta sauce would definitely be something I'd try. I never got into Spam but when I have it, it needs to be fried. I think most people are turned off of it by reputation and not really trying it. For me, it's a bit too salty and I don't like the gelatinous glop that's in there. If it's fried well and served, I can eat it no problem, but I'd prefer bacon or sausage than Spam. And every time I hear the name, I just start thinking of the Monty Python routine. Growing up, the peanut butter cookie dough was a delicacy. Now everyone is afraid that everything is "poison" and the real hysterical call everything "poison", when they don't know what they're talking about. If people actually knew what they were ingesting, they'd run scared. And I realize it's not the eggs that are the concern in cookie dough these days, it's actually the flour. But there are times a person just will take a chance to enjoy something. I was criticized for not eating butter on bread when growing up. For some reason, I just couldn't stomach it. Wasn't until a few years after moving on my own when it sank in. We didn't have BUTTER when I was growing up, it was MARGARINE (or "oleo" as my dad would call it) and everyone called it "butter". Sorry folks, margarine is NOT butter and it annoys me when people call margarine "butter". Eat it if you want, that's fine with me, I don't mind different tastes, but don't tell me it's the same thing. It ain't! I could eat it on toast, melted in, but just not the same flavor as buttered toast. Not the same at all....See More- 11 years ago
