My garden fantasies....
Comments (20)Actually, I wanted everybody's small dreams, the ones that are realizable, or almost. Because everybody's big dreams are pretty much the same, aren't they? Great soil, lots of water at the right times, perfect weather, a skilled strong willing labor force, and so on. Personally I don't want a magic wand, that would take the fun out of figuring out how to get plants to grow. I certainly wouldn't mind several dump truck loads of chipped good trees scattered about the place (alder is excellent)--it won't happen--not to mention ten tons of hay for fall planting and maintenance. I fear that hay is going to be in short supply this year as nobody has been able to cut the grass. And I certainly would like to know that there will always be someone to mow the grass and do various heavy jobs, as DH is getting on in years and will not not be able to run after the motor scythe forever. Another dream: to get an apprentice, someone whom I could teach about plants and who in return would help me with maintenance. I like to teach and could use the help. And I would love to have knowledgeable appreciative visitors come to see the garden: they are hugely rare. It's fun hearing everybody's fantasies! Melissa P.S. Strawberry, you have my sympathies about the hay fever; I had it for years and it was MISERABLE. Have you considered taking an antihistamine? I got one prescribed and used it regularly and found it made all the difference. For some reason the last two years I haven't suffered much from pollen allergies and haven't taken medication, but for eight or nine years the antihistamine was a lifesaver, and I'll return to it if I get bad hay fever again. Comments (150)Yes, the culture has changed, and most people realize it. Perhaps young adults in the workplace are more aware of sexual harassment now because of being lectured about it in college, but old fogies like dh and me are not unaware of how times have changed. He self-edits his conversation at work for many reasons, one of which is realizing that what he may think of as an innocent remark someone else may find inappropriate. An example is that he no longer comments on personal appearance other than perhaps to make a generic remark such as, "You look very cheerful today" and he's been heard to say the same to both men and women. Sadly, for those who've experienced real sexual harassment or assault at work, there are those few who cry foul for no good reason. Dh is aware of a couple of women who have a history of making such complaints and he takes pains to never be alone in an office, conference room or elevator with them, despite his reputation as an "altar boy" who would never dream of doing anything immoral. Some men don't get it and keep making inappropriate remarks that might not have raised an eyebrow 30 - 40 years ago but are not well received now. This situation isn't about just words, but about actions. And the victims aren't adults but children. And showering with boys (or horsing around while nude as the perpetrator termed it) is not just "strange" but so far over the line as to render the line invisible. I cannot fathom how Sandusky believed that was innocent behavior. Did he go home at night and tell his wife and family about playing nude in the shower with some boy? Comments (53)sshrivastava, ok, great. Look, nobody has ever claimed that the OP would "benefit by people clicking on her thread" in any hard + specific way. It's just that the person does things that call out for more attention. We know "there is certainly no financial or monetary reward". Attention is a reward that billions seek. Something psychological can be hard to explain, if you aren't researching the phenomenon in the abstract general case first. You may be trying Too Hard to wrap your head around this one case. Step back and learn about the phenomenon that I described generally. Take a few days. There is nothing gained by saying that in the last few hours you didn't get it. The fact that you didn't get it, (not so far) is A-OK, perfectly permissible. And some people will say it's all no big deal. Some will say the opposite. OTOH, if you opened new threads and had a dozen highly qualified people all helping you, and if you didn't get it still and kept on hammering in various weird ways, well, ummm, then some would say you have a problem... (which is not the case). -- New topic. The better and better this forum becomes, the more you will see people arriving on your doorstep asking for help in self-centered ways. (Reminds me of immigration). But we are all participants, not customer service staff. When you consider how much thought went into the OP's thread before it even got created, it makes reasonable sense to ask that the thread title be a bit less "fishing for all to come in out of curiosity" and a bit more precise about the concern. But this factoid alone is worth nothing. Taken in a long series, it can be evidentiary accumulation. Some will say it's no big deal. Game playing behaviors are a detectable trend, but exposing the trend is difficult if one is called upon to list specific items that are each one hard enough to be cited as disruptive or offending. Comments (13)Watch out for trying to mix cool grays with warm oak. Small amounts work OK. A gray backsplash would have gone with my countertops - but would have been drab with my warm wood. Warm wood tones and cool grays do not bring out the best in each other which is why the gray is usually paired with white. Gray is a bit overused right now which means it risks being labeled "dated" in the next 10 years though it will always be an important neutral - like cream and beige. Go ahead and try it in wall color that can be easily changed but be careful of using too much in more permanent surfaces. The grays in your countertop read warm which is why it is working with your cabinets. Consider your wall color last as it is the least permanent surface and easy to change....See More- 11 years ago
