Comments (14)Oh c'mon people, stop whining and start designing - I think it's a great idea! For starters, I'd just switch my thinking to 'miniatures' or dwarfs from the beginning, though not to exclude full size whatever should it fit in. Then I'd decide on where the 'pond' would go, and the pathway(s), the raised (x 10') on the superstrong lattice work floor that allows light into the area below it for hostas, impatience, ferns, etc. I'd plant (and these may be full sized) fruit trees all around the yard, against an openwork fence and espalier them so as to have them become the fence, produce fruit and not take up any more space than necessary. I'd have a 5 x 5' irregularly round or oval raised bed for alpines, letting the rocks spill down from one 'corner' towards the pond (with a few only koi inside), and a couple of old iron chairs (with pillows of course) or a bench against one side. The majority of what was left could be planted with a slow growing grass or thyme path (mentioned above) bordered by dwarf conifers, 1-2 specimen trees and filled in with annuals or perennials that behave well. Comments (7)One of the gardening mags that I used to take had an article about a man that came up with a great idea. He made a lifesize cardboard cutout that could be dressed in an old shirt and pants and sat down in a chair. The arms extended and the hands held bird seed. The idea was that you removed the regular feeders and the birds would become used to eating out of the hand of the dummy. Then, after a while, I think it was a week, you would dress in the same outfit and sit in it's place with your hand extended. Worked like magic. The birds either didn't notice or didn't mind. He sold them on a limited basis as he cut them out by hand, based on male or female, short or tall and painted the faces, I think you could even put a wig on them. Comments (150)Yes, the culture has changed, and most people realize it. Perhaps young adults in the workplace are more aware of sexual harassment now because of being lectured about it in college, but old fogies like dh and me are not unaware of how times have changed. He self-edits his conversation at work for many reasons, one of which is realizing that what he may think of as an innocent remark someone else may find inappropriate. An example is that he no longer comments on personal appearance other than perhaps to make a generic remark such as, "You look very cheerful today" and he's been heard to say the same to both men and women. Sadly, for those who've experienced real sexual harassment or assault at work, there are those few who cry foul for no good reason. Dh is aware of a couple of women who have a history of making such complaints and he takes pains to never be alone in an office, conference room or elevator with them, despite his reputation as an "altar boy" who would never dream of doing anything immoral. Some men don't get it and keep making inappropriate remarks that might not have raised an eyebrow 30 - 40 years ago but are not well received now. This situation isn't about just words, but about actions. And the victims aren't adults but children. And showering with boys (or horsing around while nude as the perpetrator termed it) is not just "strange" but so far over the line as to render the line invisible. I cannot fathom how Sandusky believed that was innocent behavior. Did he go home at night and tell his wife and family about playing nude in the shower with some boy?
