Sewing or Football???

It's not quilted, but I'm very happy to have completed the top (40"x40") for the donation quilt. I did the center mariners' compass last weekend, then added the borders this weekend. The sun face images are from a Laurel Burch panel called Celestial Dreams. I was actually done in time to join the neighbor's for their superbowl party this evening.

Searching through my stash, I found a pretty multicolor batik that will work for the backing. There won't be much room to spare but there's enough. I'll use up every scrap of the yellow fabric for the binding too, but again, there's just enough to do it.

If I'm really diligent I might even get it done before Friday when the ALS group has their next fundraising. We're working out the details on how to do the quilt raffle and aren't ready to start it yet, but it would be fun to bring it to the Walk to show everyone.

The colors in the picture came out a little dark. The two inner borders and the first two dark stripes in the outer triangles are blue and purple. In the picture it just looks like one black stripe. I'll post a better picture when it's all done.

Keep going Talley. Stuff like the hot rollers? Yes, donate if they still work. Full puzzles. yes, yes. I buy puzzles to use the pieces for crafts for my kids. Doesn't matter if they are all there or not. Needed curlers one year for a Halloween costume. I can see someone buying the rollers to paint and create some fun garden art. You have to stop thinking that people buy the stuff for the original purpose. They don't. I'm always looking for wool skirts that someone put in the wash and shrunk. I make braided wool rugs and those skirts are perfect. If clothing is really too worn out, I always cut the buttons off. A jar of buttons is great stuff for crafts. Then I cut the clothing up and use it for rags. Much better than throwing it out and then grabbing a paper towel. We keep a stash in the garge for things like wiping up oil and other things where I won't want to wash the rag. Just throw it away then. To me, books are consumables. I buy them at the thrift store, read and re-donate. Our library takes donations and then has a huge sale twice a year. I'm a long time quilter and I do some sewing (but more of a wanna be with that one). I got rid of my fabric stash several years ago. I think this fabric hoarding is awful. I've been a quilt appraiser for several years and am amazed at how much money people spend for stuff to just sit on the selves for years. Let's live our lives, not store them. I know you are in the city, so it's different than me just putting a bag in the van for the next time I'm out, but just fill a grocery bag every day and drop it off. Don't wait for a big load to go. How Often Do You Organize Your Sewing Area?

Since I have limited space in a bedroom I cannot be too disorganized, but I have had it get quite messy. When I cannot find a pattern, or fabric, I then take a day and get things back into some sort of order again. I do keep my ongoing projects out, and in a closet I have on hangers anything that is large and almost done with what ever it needs hanging together.. this I found is helpful. I am organized in a way, that I do have my fabric and patterns together in one container for my to do projects and other large baggies or what ever with scrap fabric for a certain project as well as the pattern, idea and notes on what I have that fabric for ... for example, all 2 inch long strips are in one large baggie and marked for future log cabin - 2 inch squares for 'what ever' and so on. I find this helpful... at least when I cut fabric the left overs do not end up in a pile and discarded because there is too much stuff to sort out. I have one ongoing project for club charity quilts that is kept in a separate bin with kids fabric and patterns so when the mood hits me to do something different, I can just pull the box and do some work on it.. eventually they get done and donated to my guild. I also have 2 cats and they do things like play with the thimbles (took 2 months to find it) as well as spools of thread - you know the stuff they like to do. Still I enjoy having them around, even if it is 'pet me time' while I am trying to sew something! I am enjoying reading this post and everyone's delima about orgaiziation... and I agree - if my guest think that my room is a mess... they can stay home! Several years back, a male childhood friend made the comment that his 2 boys did not have a single article that had been made by a family person to keep as an heirloom & pass on down. He wanted help. I got him started & he did quillow type quilts with the pocket only for feet not folding into a pillow. He did the tie quilting. He was a single fireman with custody of his boys..worked 24 on & 48 off. He worked on them while they we at school & kept his project hid until Christmas. Boy were they surprised but that didn't solve the problem. They wanted more. I did a quilt top with their last name in the center block & gave it to the 3 of them jointly them when their father/grandfather died. We all worked quiting on it & the boys are both over 30 now with places of their own & they swap it back & forth during the year. They bicker over who the real owner should be....oldest or the baby of the family.

I don't know how to quilt it. I can do a nice FM meander but it doesnt seem like enough. My FM skills aren't good enough for anything really cool. I am going to use at least some metallic thread.

Wow, Kate, that is so creative and well executed. I hope that someday I will be able to do more than simply reproduce someone elses ideas. Until then, I'll just keep doing and learning. Good job.

Gorgeous! You are so creative using panels-something I want to get better at. This was a too busy Panel, even for LB; you successfully broke it down and highlighted each element beautifully.

Can you do FM bubbles or pebbles? They are easy, once you get going. They would look great in the white - bigger circles in the borders or a ribbon candy. The compass only needs something simple - I'm not good at SID.

Having 'just enough' fabric is all that's needed. @;) You certainly have an eye for combining fabric in an eye-pleasing way and it looks like a Blue Ribbon quilt to me.

Thank you for the nice comments. This project is close to my heart. My ALS friend loves bold colors and even tho the quilt isn't for her, I wanted her to be pleased with it. I have a few of the sun face panel pieces left and am planning to make a similar quilt for her before she moves back to Puerto Rico this summer. Sadly, the ALS has started to progress more rapidly than we all hoped and she won't be able to work much longer. What a terrible disease this is! Did any of you see the segment that was broadcast on CBS Sunday Morning this past weekend? It was about an ALS physician who was diagnosed with the disease himself a few years ago. DH and I were both in tears by the end of the piece.

Kate, I love how that turned out! I did see the segment on CBS, and then there was a segment before the Superbowl began about a former player with ALS.

I agree that ALS is a wicked condition. One of the worst in MHO. I am so sorry for your friend.
You have to be proud of you quilt. It is great. I love the fabric and I am not a big LB fan.
My suggestion for quilting a mariners compass is in the ditch. I just did a small one in SBQ and I feel that it makes the points very expressive. I have also done a pillow that way. Not sure about the rest but I know I would leave the suns plain. Really like what you have done with the fabric.

Kate, I didn't see the segment, but I'm very aware of the disease and what it does to a person as one of my uncle's had it. I'm sure advances have been made since 1970 when he passed and it's donations like yours are what helps make it happen. Thank you.

The motif fabric is such a wonderful inspiration! I love the mariners compass that surrounds it, too. And I'm a batik fan, so the rest goes without saying. Beautiful!

Rosa is right ~ great use of that book!

I also wanted to say how wonderful what you are doing to help educate and fight ALS ~ ~ sorry for your friend. Start thinking about a very special Inspirational label for her quilt. Some labels are more meaningful than others.
