New and older Buck roses
Comments (6)Thank you, Leslie. That is my husband's favorite rose. We think the color is rather unique. Carla, I think you were my inspiration for either Quietness or Earth Song. I love them both. Patricia, you are really informed. I knew about the attempts at creating a more earth friendly rose from Buck to Bayse to Dr. Steve George. But I was not aware of the influence of Pedro Dot. I see his name on the Ashdown list, and now I need to look into it more. I am not aware of Condessa de Sastago, so I need to do more homework. Do you happen to know the source of Condessa de Sastago or Pedro Dot? I have often thought that an hispanic bed would be nice. Sammy...See MoreWhat Are Your Best Performing Kordes Roses??
Comments (42)This will be my second season with Bliss Parfuma and I also love it! Extremely healthy with gorgeous blooms that last forever and a lovely bushy, well foliated shrub shape. I have found fragrance to be moderately strong in heat and very strong in cooler temperatures, which might explain how it won the Glasgow Tollcross Fragrance Award. It has a very pleasant and unusual fragrance like a jasmine-based perfume with hints of sweet fruit and…maybe shea butter? I have never grown any other modern Kordes aside from Beverly, which really does have the most amazing peach/plum/citrus fragrance. It has a very attractive growth habit for a hybrid tea and has a low thorn count. I no longer grow it because it frequently developed powdery mildew in my conditions, a weakness it must have inherited from its parent The McCartney Rose. Amongst older Kordes roses, none can be more fragrant, beautiful, charming, romantic or floriferous than Crimson Glory or Barcelona!...See MoreWhat are your best growing "weird color" roses?
Comments (73)If you grow Blue for You, allow it to set self seeds and raise seedlings. Lavender Crush looks very much like what many Blue for You self seedlings mature into. I've raised many just to see "what if" and most have matured into mauve shades, varying from almost white to very dark. Most are semi double to double and all are very vigorous and very well scented. If you check out some of Blue for You's offspring on HMF, they are very likely self seedlings as they very much resemble what self set seed produce. And, Blue for You (and the seedlings I have tried) all root very easily, grow well own root and seedlings should be free from RMV and have made useful root stocks for me, including 3' - 4' long whips for standards. Just a suggestion for anyone interested in playing......See MoreYour Best Roses in the Summer Heat
Comments (44)Ingrid- thank you for the 'deanna krause' pics! She is an incredibly tough, heat tolerant, everbloomer. I've observed her at the Earthkind test gardens in Farmer's Branch, TX (Dallas suburb). 'Deanna's' parents are Tom Carruth's famous 'fourth of July' and Buck's 'carefree beauty' which is one of the parents of 'knockout'. I've grown 'fourth of july' and 'carefree beauty'- both tough and heat tolerant, but 'FoJ' has viscious thorns. Does deanna have a scent? 'Purple splash' is a close relative of 'FoJ' and has performed admirably in central TX with a nice fragrance...See MoreJasminerose, California, USDA 9b/Sunset 18
