Comments (38)After reading all these comments, I'd like to say that drying your front-loader gasket thoroughly after finishing your loads is something you just need to do- it takes less time than writing these comments/questions! My Electrolux is 10 years old and I always left the door open; with a dehumidifier in the room I thought that was enough. I was wrong. I love this washer, but bought a new HE top-loader ( a big expense for us) and returned it after one day- it was worse than useless. We ordered a new gasket, since I realized that over time the old one had molded and was not salvageable. My husband replaced it with the help of the video and the instructions that came with it. He is handy but had never done anything like this. It was not as difficult as you might imagine and was totally worth it. Now I get down on my knees on my garden kneeling pad and just dry it completely, and put in vinegar with blue jeans loads (this also helps set the dye on denim if you don't want them to fade too fast). I also use vinegar and hot water for towels. Once a week or so I run a hot cycle with vinegar and dry the gasket, and leave the door open. I do not use chlorine bleach at all because of the environmental impact and because of sensitive skin. Also use fragrance- and dye-free liquid detergent, and I'm wondering how much of an impact these ingredients are having on the mold problem y'all are having. All is well, still got my good machine. Dry that Gasket!...See MoreComments/Suggestions on floorplan?
Comments (21)Thanks to most of you! Definitely a few negative Nancy's out there, but will pay them no mind ;-) So let's take care of the grandma situation first, since you're all worried about her. The basement is definitely a walkout with a bunch of nice windows. She strongly prefers the ability to have privacy and this was the easiest way to accommodate her. In fact we had originally planned for the multipurpose room to be in the basement and have a first floor space for her but she wasn't interested. Also were quite keen on having the laundry room in the mud room as we will have lots of dirty clothes from working the garden/animals/etc. not worried about hauling laundry from 2nd floor down to first and back. another common theme - the kids rooms. I'm just about certain we'll add 2 feet to the north end of the house to increase size of kiddos bedrooms and family room. @mrspete, thanks much for your idea, it definitely inspired some thoughts around changes we could make. None of them minor unfortunately, but we need to do something... @bpathome - Ty for the note about stuff getting sucked into corners. We'll keep that in mind as we go. @nightowl - an avid home brewer and BBQ (low n slow) guy, we're planning on an outdoor kitchen area between the back of the garage across the north end of the house! @paraveina - you're very perceptive! In fact the architects have worked on commercial projects as well as currently working on a condo complex :). We're a very pragmatic-yet-creative family, desire an open airy feel to our houses and are not too interested in froofy fancy stuff. We are looking to quality finishes, but I wouldn't say luxury,. Lots of hardwood floors, even reclaimed finishes are in the mix. Our builder is very open to sweat equity and we intend to do some work on this project as well. I'd REALLY like to hear any more thoughts you have about our project, of all the repsonses I'd say yours was the most valuable! Thank you :-) @architectrunnerguy - we are very much considering the structure and lot holistically, but thanks for the recommendation. Elevations are getting locked down after floorplans are done. Not sure why the "Nancy's" have has it in for our architects, they've done an excellent job and have worked hard to understand our wants and needs....See MoreNeed suggestion of a good front-load washer.
Comments (22)@Jane Check with your local sears and big box stores about the exchange/return policy. They all had some sort of exchange ranging from 15 days to 30 days when I was shopping. You need to read the fine print very carefully. IIRC there was a catch in the Lowes that limited the exchange to higher priced item only. Also note that they do price match each other during "sales events". I know Sears does the measurements for every appliance in the specifications on the web site. You can't determine whether that fridge will fit from the depth measurement (front to back) and your counter depth? I have a narrow galley kitchen so had to be careful with the open door swing measurement. I'm terrible with imagining "the space" so ended up cutting a piece of cardboard to various sizes so I could "see" how much it stuck out. Other posters are also right about the differences between the "normal" US cu ft and how much will fit in the European machines. Mieles and Askos were far above my budget so I didn't seriously consider them. However, I've used a Miele before and you really can stuff it almost full and have the clothes come out beautifully clean. None of my North American front loaders could be loaded as full with the same results. Yes, you can put a lot in those big drum tubs, but you can load up the European models too. I guess it depends on how you do laundry: all in a day or some loads every day. We're on a well so I can't run the machine endlessly for just one day. Also remember that all the modern front loaders have relatively long wash cycles; most are +/- 1 hour. The sanitary cycle on my 41072 is 2 hours minimum and almost 3 if I do more than 1 extra rinse. Comments (5)Georgect, yeah it’s not NSF certified. They say it “meets NSF standards”. I have Samsung currently and they’re working fine. It’s just time to upgrade with a baby on the way. Samsung is the only one of the three that directly says the washer uses 150 degree water. GE won’t answer my emails, their chat is unavailable seemingly permanently and LG agent just now said 125-135 degrees, which I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but if it is that is not enough to do what they claim in any case....See MoreFletcher Smith
