@Chris Powchuk I don't agree with that at all. I had an Electrolux front load. Crappy machine. Bio-stink built up on clothing. You would think after running a 2 hour cycle with warm water, on heavy cycle with extra rinses would result in clean clothing. Nope. The machine was also clean as a whistle inside and out. I kicked that machine to the curb and got an LG. Much better machine. Clean clothes and clean smelling clothes. So I do not believe they are all built the same or operate the same. I used to dry the boot and leave the door open on my Electrolux. Never any mold. I have gotten lazy with my LG and do not dry the boot but do leave the door open and again no mold. I run affresh on the tub clean cycle every now and then and that's about it. And top loads are not exempt from mold. I had a Fisher and Paykel top load at my previous house. That machine built up mold all around the outside of the tub where you couldn't see it but boy could you smell it. We had to take the whole tub out and drag it into our shower to clean it.

I got the same washing machine, also from Lowes a couple days ago and just did a load of laundry. I'm selling my Whirlpool Duet because my clothes were shrinking (probably the dryer) from too much hot water filling into the Duet and the fact that my clothes were wrinkled and bunched up. Now, I've observed this: 1) clothing just as wrinkled 2) Not quite spun dry as much as the Duet 3) Still puts in hot water I messed up. I also am not getting any suds at all. The dispenser tells you to move it down for liquid and I did this, but the liquid seemed to seep through the other passage. The washer did not show it soaped up. The best washer I had was the first Duet/HE3 bought at the Sears Outlet Center but it tore my clothing (probably defect in the drum). Clothing was clean and unwrinkled and the machine was otherwise perfect. So I should have bought the LG. For $718.00, I made a decision. I thought the onboard heater would control the water temperature and I was wrong. I have bad appliance Karma. I bought a cooktop that is a gas, non adjustable one and the the flames are so strong they practically burn my pan and food on higher, and don't cook it through on higher or lower. So I give up. I am a decent cook and never ever had an issue with a gas stove. I just give up. -Wendy

Thanks everyone for all your comments. I have done so much research now on every brand that's been mentioned here. I'm still not sure of what brand to buy since they all seem to have their problems. I have heard that Speed Queen is about the best but it is pricier. I do believe tho that I will stick to an old fashioned agitator model and not go with the HE models. The HE's are much more attractive but it IS just the laundry room. It's so easy to get caught up in all the hype about low water usage, pretty colors and designer looking machines when all I really want is something that will get my clothes clean without ruining them and not break down all the time. I have never had to spend one dime on the old Kenmore washer and dryer that I have now and it's OLD! I know things aren't built like that anymore so will just have to get over it and lower my expectations somewhat, but I still don't want to spend good money on machines that will not last. Whatever I wind up with, I just hope it's not a lemon. I think that's the problem nowadays...the quality is just not there anymore. Too many plastic parts, too many engineering shortcuts. A lot more lemons than there use to be. :(
