Tropicana Hybrid Tea was my first rose. It's kind of orange like fragrant cloud.

I'm in a very different climate to you, but HMF says Ashram is hardy to 6b, but requires Spring freeze protection. It is a definite orange for me, and healthy.

Ashram is glorious but not available in the US commercially. Dang it.

Molie, I don't know if she would be hardy for you but Pat Austin is a stunner here. Blooms all summer. Starts a deep coppery orange with a long slow fade.

I grow chihuly but not all my blooms are orange. I usually have a range of orange , pink ad yellow and then they fade quickly to other shades. And more than often there are all three colors in one bloom. My Strike it Rich is more orange and then fades to a yellowish color.

Livin Easy is my very best orange and trouble free. You will love it!

I'm in southern California (10b/20), so I don't know how applicable this will be, but I have two Chihulys and they just don't bloom that often. When they do, the flowers are striped -- orange and white to coral and white. I'm disappointed in its infrequency of bloom, and to some extent the flowers themselves -- they are on the small side and don't last well, either on the bush or in a vase. The bushes themselves are big, vigorous and healthy.

I also have "Livin' Easy" and that's doing well. The flowers only last a day or so, but they are orange -- except of course, when they're pink, which they are here on very hot days. We are dry, though, so that may not be your experience.

Another thought -- if your DH could live with an orange-red or vermilion, I would recommend Trumpeter. It's not orange-orange, but it's extremely striking and blooms its head off. The flowers last and last, inside and out. Wonderful form. It may look red on a computer, but go look at some and see what you think.

If you spray for BS, I'd suggest Wildfire. Shreveport is another possibility, but the blooms are small. Folklore is a better rose than either of these in terms of pumping out blooms and exhibition form, but may not be orange enough.

Livin Easy is one of those roses that do well in some locations but not others... I really liked that rose also but had to shovel prune because of severe leaf drop from blackspot...

I'm trying Easy Does it and it has done well its first season but really can not recommend it yet...

My two most orange roses are Lady Shallot (Creamsicle orange) and Westerland (a climber). Westerland is ORANGE.

Disneyland Rose is another really pretty orange but I don't know about it's hardiness. I got the new climber Above All this spring and I've been VERY impressed with it so far. It's been growing like a weed and blooming it's head off all summer. So if you can find a place for a climber...

For non-fading orange I would recommend Kordes' Brillant, Prominent, Impatient, or Light My Fire.

I think you've probably gotten some very good suggestions. I can only give an opinion on the ones I've grown though. I do love my Tropicana roses. Very dependable and mine are disease resistant. I love Folklore too, but it's a lot lighter color, when it's at its best it is very prolific. If you ever wanted to grow a climber in this color range America is great once it becomes established. I've also been impressed with Cinnamon Dolce, new to me this year.

Molie - I'm just about 10 mi. north of you. About Face is beautiful and hardy and has survived several of our winters. I just started Anna's Promise this year which is also lovely. Hope it's as hardy as AF.

I'd suggest wrapping the lower foot or two of the canes with burlap to protect them from the dry winter winds in late November.

Wow, what great suggestions and general advice from all of you folks here on the Rose Forum! Thank you for your opinions, photographs, and experiences. In fact, I'm going to save this whole thread and use it to do my "research" into possible plants. Definitely, I'll share it with my husband.

Because of the terribly hot, dry summer and fears of a crummy fall season, we've decided not to plant a new rose until spring. I'm leaning towards an own-root rose rather than grafted. I'd love to hear your views of that, too.

I think where I live might be hotter than your location and I don't know how this rose does with cold weather. I have Lady of Shalott on its own root. This is her first year, so I am not sure how she will do when she "grows up", but for now, she seems to be doing ok with our hot as the surface of the sun weather (supposed to be 106 most of the week). Here is a picture of her. She is a lot more orange than I thought she would be.

Merla, HMF says Westerland can be grown as a shrub, too, and they list it as hardy to 5b and vigorous. If I had room I would definitely plant it - it's beautiful.

Yes, I would agree Westerland is vigorous! Mine hit the eaves of the house in its second summer. Beautiful orange. Autumn Sunset and Above All are just as nice, in my opinion.

My best orange is Easy Does IT, hands down. It has nonstop blooms and clean foliage. Tropicana has always been reliable. Summer Sun, Lady of Shalott, Pumpkin Patch, Pat Austin, Livin' Easy, About Face and Brothers Grimm have performed well for me in intense summer heat and drought, and bitter cold dry winters. Chihuly, on the other hand, was a stingy bloomer. All three times I tried it. It was not winter hardy for me in zone 6B.

You might take a look at Palatine's list--they have some good orange roses still, and they would all be hardy for you.

Starts out Orange here than turns to pinkish in a couple days... In our cooler Sept/Oct weather that whiteish bloom has been on the bush for 2 weeks...

I work in a greenhouse. We have discard piles that need to be written off. Usually we wait till we have enough to go to the trouble. Well in that pile one day I was walking by and something bright orange caught my eye. When I got closer I saw that it was a very pretty orange blossom on a little rose that was almost dead. The rose was Orange Triumph, a hardy shrub. I have nursed it back to health at the greenhouse. It has grown well with the extra attention. Sorry I don't have a picture to show you but it might be worth checking out.

I love Tropicana, but it can lean toward the coral side of orange. One that I had that I loved was Cary Grant. Huge buds and blooms, strong fragrance, took my breath away everytime I saw it. Unfortunately I don't have it anymore, but may need to put it on my list to buy again. I only had it four years...

I know I'm late on this thread but I've been raving about my Lady of Shalott lately and here's another chance to do just that! She is a small climber here, which is perfect for where I have her--growing on the east side of a wooden fence. But it is a pretty unprotected sunny location overall although she does get some late afternoon shade owing to that fence. I'd still say she holds up well to our triple digit summer heat. Even the foliage which has made its way over the fence shows no signs of burning and that's definitely in all day sun. Overall she is trouble free and blooms pretty much continuously in our hot, dry, inland NorCal climate. And the blooms are just so incredibly beautiful!
