Suggestions for orange climbing rose.

And I mean a true orange like the fruit, not russet, or salmon or apricot, or peach or amber or ??? I have Joseph's coat which has a shade of orange to it along with yellow and pink. It can be a new or old rose but am looking for a climber. Pictures would be great.

This is "Rusty's Angel's Camp Orange," a climber thought perhaps to be 'Royal Sunset,' which was collected by Rusty Rolleri, in Angel's Camp, CA. I think the Historic Garden volunteers may propagate this one for the April Open Garden and Sale.

I like this a lot. If you're interested, I can post an image of the plant, in full bloom in the Sacramento City Cemetery.

I had one for a while called 'Paprika' that was fairly orange, though on the reddish orange side. It was kind of meh, I got rid of it.

'Royal Sunset' is gorgeous, and fragrant, but it's fairly apricot around here.

Pinata has some orange in it, but it is a blend like J'sC

I've had surprisingly good luck (in hardiness) with Dortmund. Not easy to find, I think. It's a Kordes rose: 12/15' and single red flowers, repeat bloom, little dieback. Also I've had extremely good growing from "Felicite et Perpetue," a BIG plant that needs the side of a garage (which is where mine grow). Once blooming, but gorgeous white, good foliage and no winter dieback for me. (And we've been having some rough winters lately here.) One more: "Zepherine Drouhin," a quite wonderful raspberry red, thornless, fragrant, medium 10-12'. I'll try to attach a photo of F. et P.(That pic was taken 2 seasons ago: the 3 plants are now about twice that volume.) Now I'm speaking from zone 5, and I really can't say whether these are as strong in zone 4. BTW: Some of these hard-to-find varieties are usually available from Hortico, which, despite some inexcusable shipping mix-ups, still has the best selection of hard-to-find varieties.

You have my sympathies with RRD! Been there. (Actually, more accurately: being there right now...) #1. I recently had to find the answer to question #1 for myself. The answer I received indicated that 99.99% of the time, one year is long enough to wait for replanting in the same spot as far as coming down with RRD again goes, because if the infected rose is going to regenerate from its infected roots, it will almost surely do so within a year. If it does regenerate from its infected roots, of course, any mites in the area would have the capability of passing the infection to the newly planted rose. You don't necessarily have to wait a year, but you are taking a greater risk if you don't wait that long. I'm going to wait a year. #2. I'm not sure about the answer to #2, except that I know the answer is unrelated to Rose Rosette Disease. The potential reason to avoid using the same hole would be a concern for Rose Replant Disease, which sometimes (or maybe even frequently) does occur in England. I don't know whether it happens on this continent or not, or if it does happen whether it happens frequently enough to worry about. If it were actually sometimes a problem here too, two years would be long enough to wait on replanting in the very same hole. But along a fence, you probably could just easily move the new hole over a bit anyway, right? #3. My Cornelia Hybrid Musk, before succumbing to RRD, liked to throw out extremly long canes that were beautifully flexible and had a zillion little stems with buds on them. So I think Cornelia would be nice on a fence, and it's as beautiful a rose as you can imagine. It's also likely to have fewer disease issues than Golden Showers for most people. (However, it appears that you were quite lucky with Golden Showers there, so maybe you might want to think "Don't fix what ain't broke!") Lots of Hybrid Musks might work. Some: Wilhelm, Prosperity, Bubble Bath, Lavender Lassie. Some other possibilities (that I don't have experience with, but have seen recommended by others): Felix Leclerc, Soaring Spirits, Goldfinch, Rosarium Uetersen (Seminole Wind), Abraham Darby. I do have (a new) Climbing Iceberg and that might work well for you, even though it can get blackspot. New Dawn is supposed to be easy to grow, though it does have more thorns than some other choices. Mortimer Sackler ought to work well, as long as you don't count on too much distance (lovely, fragrant, low thorns, healthy). Mexican flame vine has bright orange flowers and has beautiful foliage as well. It generally freezes down in the winter and sprouts back when the weather warms up. You may want to consider Westerland, a beautiful orange climbing rose. I have both plants and find them healthy and low-maintenance. Molly

I checked Weeks and Stars websites, star listed "Orange Crush"

Looks more red than orange, but might be one to check out

Heirloom Roses has an orange sport of Altissimo named 'Christine'. I think they have at least one and maybe two orangish climbers from John Clements' breeding. Portlandia is one. Ginger Syllabub is a fairly new orangish climber from Harkness. Heirloom and Vintage both carry it.

There's a Warner, climbing miniature rose from the UK that I don't know is available in the US called Warm Welcome. I love it because of its colour and fragrance.

I also agree with Royal Sunset and Westerland.

We grow Oranges n' Lemons and it's 9' tall in it's first year. It's a very bright orange striped rose.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I am writing them down. I have Oranges n' Lemons, which I love, in the smaller bush form. I don't know if it is suppose to be that way, or the fact I keep it pruned. It does like to send out very tall shoots.

Jeri - Is "Rusty's Angel's Camp Orange," an OGR? Pretty rose though I wish it was a little darker orange. Where is the April Open Garden and Sale taking place, Sacramento?

"Rusty's Angel's Camp Orange" is a modern rose. A suggested identity is 'Royal Sunset.'

The April event is in the Historic Rose Garden, within the Historic Old City Cemetery, 1000 Broadway, Sacramento, CA. The Open Garden always takes place on a mid-April Saturday. (The 2013 date has not yet been announced.)

I believe the photos posted here were taken at Open Garden, April, 2011.
