Fragrant Cloud overwintered extremely well for me without protection (first year plant). It died back to about 6" but is shooting basals like crazy, and the basals have been taking the nights below 32F well. It's by far the most vigorous HT I've tried. I don't know about disease resistance in your area, it's perfectly clean here. It bloomed like a fool last season, I was suprised at how much I loved the shocking bright color.

I have it planted with lemon yellow daylillies and blue globe thistle. Zowie.

How about Tropicana. I have one that is in it's third yr. I love this rose. Wonderful strong scent. It is one of my favorites.

Hello Dana - how are you? Check out Honey Sweet, a buck. I have two, and they sail through the winters without protection. They're a bright, coral color and have a honey fragrance. The foliage is a bonus; burgundy leaves. I got mine at Hoerrs.

Hoerrs also carries another Buck; Winter Sunset, which is a softer orange/apricot. Have it also; did great through the winter and has a wonderful fragrance. Lasts well in the vase also.

As to the roses on your ist, Tea Time is one of my better wnter survivors, but not sure about fragrance. I'll 2nd Honey Sweet also, but Winter Sunset is too yellow, and blows way too quick IMO.

Strike it Rich

I grow Fragrant Cloud in zone 6, 10 miles north of Boston. It's own root from Roses Unlimited. I am satisfied. The fragrance is wonderful! It's more of a dark coral-orange-pink on the underside of the petals, but the upper side is certainly dark orange for me.

My favorite rose is now Day Breaker. It is in its second year in my garden, as new as it is this rose is far ahead of the others. It was first to break dormancy, has beautiful shinny red leaves (pretty even without roses). My others just have green cannes right now. I did protect it, but I live in Northern Ontario.
The roses are plentiful, they last long and are stunning. I can't remember about fragrance. My only regret is that I only got one.

I also have had success with Fragrant Cloud unprotected here. She suffers very little dieback. She spent her first 4 years in a pot and was garaged for the winter. Planted her outside last spring. Lots of blooms and great bloom form.

However, I don't really like orange and don't consider FC to be orange. I describe the color as coral/brick red/orange. Sometimes it almost looks red. It is absolutely stunning in the evening.

So true, Harry, there really aren't any orange roses. Like the poppies in my garden that have been coming up, according to local legend, for over 100 years (I haven't been here quite that long!)

Well I know that Dana really meant orangey. For which there are many roses that could be called "orange".

I have one, of course its' a Kordes. A climber called Salita. I had one last year that started in a pot but wasn't doing well so in the middle of summer I decided to put it in the ground! It died. But it lived long enough to give me a few blooms. That were brightly colored, a blend of orange and red. Or vermilion. Supposedly flowers at all levels not only at the top. A good repeater according to the ARS Encyclopedia that will grow to 13' in the right climate. Which may not be a Z 5 but still there's hope that it might as it's rated for Z5.

Thanks for all responses.When I mentioned zone 5 in the subject of posting I was hoping to get response from people who have grown the roses and I can be sure that I would end up buying hardy roses.Fragrant cloud seems to be a favourite.I will look around and get one if I can find one locally.I can also pick up Honey sweet from the lacal nursary if I can bring myself to pay $29.99 or I might add it to my list for mail order next spring.Tropicana looks like cl America which I have .Liane I have daybreaker and like it a lot.mgleason -last summer the local nursary had prairie sunrise and winter sunset and I choose the PS because it had deeper apricot color with more petals and
distinct smell and Iam happy with my choice.Do you have any fragrant orange/blends?
Jim,You are right in assuming that I was hoping to hear about orang(y)e roses like gingersnap.looks like there aren't too many choises in that color range.Fragrance and hardiess in a orange rose is all Iam lookig for . I might try Cary Grant or Flora danica next spring.
