Fm antenna matching and SWR.
Comments (3)Oops. Quite right there. Here's the link. Got to be careful anymore. I got "flagged" in another forum for posting these questions since a member was convince that i was trying to sell these transmitters. Even after assurances to the contrary, and reposting my question free of any links to the brand or vendor, he remained unconvinced and kept complaining to the moderators. Wow. USB2.0 FM Audio transmitter Wireless adapter : eBay and pics of the inside of device http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...t/SDC14269.jpg http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...t/SDC14278.jpg http://images15.fotki.com/v588/photo...209/FM2-vi.gif http://images52.fotki.com/v1551/phot...209/FM1-vi.gif Since my post I decided to simplify the matter quite a bit by just using a set of rabbit ears, "tuned" to about 53inch total length (both "ears" laid vertically) via an online calculator for 1/2 dipole, and simply soldering the USB card directly to the antenna via 1/4 inch stubs of the flat twin lead emerging from the antenna's base. The little bit of twin lead used to reach the xmitter is negligible in the calcualtions (actually I did shave an approx amount of length from the measurement of the "ears". That was super easy. I rationalized, from the seat-of-the-pants, that thus eliminating any coax or distance between the xmitter and the antenna minimized the necessity for any further balancing via a balun. I secured this vertically in a first floor hall closet in the middle of the house.... basically its a rabbit ears version of this.. http://www.qsl.net/va3iul/Antenna/Wire%20Antennas%20for%20Ham%20Radio/16-Vertical%20Dipole%20Antenna.jpg ...and ran 12 ft of USB cable down to the laptop in my workshop. It works spectacularly! Crystal clear stereo fm out to about 150 ft of my house wherein it drops of quite suddenly. I thing the vertical 1/2 wave produces a nice clean toroid of coverage just where I need it without concern for overstepping myself Without a lot of adjustment I seem to have stumbled onto just what I wanted. The locator site was either out of date or not specific enough to my neighborhood (being based only on zip code). A couple of the freqs I chose according to that site had rather clear and strong stations already there. I drove around in my car in around an approx 1/2 mile perimeter of my home and located a channel, 106.4 that was dead quiet within 100mz in either direction. Worked out great....See MoreWho Has An HD Antenna + DVR?
Comments (18)Don't know what sports events you're talking about. Some are broadcast locally. You could check on that. Don't know what channel Mad Men is on, but again, you could check and see if it's on the internet. Many shows can be watched after the airing date on the internet. Sometimes they do it after the season is over if you look for it. CNN used to be broadcast occasionally around her on one of the independent stations. As I recall WGN used to do this too but they don't anymore, they're now a CW affilliate. I'd guess if you want the broadcast of CNN you need cable or satellite. Don't know a way around that. However, you might look into Dish Network. They have a $20/month package. See if that has the stations you want. It's for something like one year at that price and then you have to dot the "I"s and cross the "T"s to avoid an autorenewal. One thing though that hasn't been mentioned, you're thinking you can drop the landline and keep the broadband. Yes, you CAN do that, but the cost of broadband will go up without the landline and normally it'll be lots more than the $17 you say it costs to have it. So check into that. If you cancel the service and then try to get it back, there's usually wrist-slap charges too....See MoreSears Craftsman garage door opener. Remotes not working anymore
Comments (4)You are doing the right thing by asking your neighbor to unplug his opener temporarily. It is not common for one opener to interfere with another. I am including some additional information for you to consider. Limited range of your remote controls could be related to radio frequency interference that comes from something in your home or in the surrounding environment. Certain electrical devices can radiate interference; this could be almost anything that is plugged into an electrical outlet. Please keep in mind that the device can be brand new, or can be an item that has been in use for quite a while. Also, the item may continue to function properly as far as you are able to tell. The only problem with the item may be that it has started to broadcast the interference, with no other symptoms noted. Some devices are more likely to generate interference than others. This includes TV cable, cable amplifiers, surge protectors, fluorescent lights, battery charging devices (power tools, golf carts, etc.), anything that utilizes a timer (sprinkler systems, lights, alarm systems, etc.), and a myriad of others. If the problem seems sporadic, we can safely assume that the device responsible for the interference is only being operated during these times. Again, please keep in mind that the age of the device does not determine if it is capable of broadcasting unwanted interference. Any electrical device can be the source of the problem. Comments (63)Do you use it frequently? We use ours daily. We wake up to the news and I come home for lunch M-F and tune into shows during that time. We also watch TV at night, especially before bed. Do you spend the big bucks on cable for the TV and not watch it very often? Yes, and I feel ripped off with Directv. Also do you fight over it with your SO? No. We have multiple TVs so if we disagree on a show then I just watch in a different room. Our house isn't that big and it's just me and the hubby. We have a 54" in our living room and I don't consider that very big anymore. When we replace it someday we'll go to 65-70". Our living room is open to the kitchen and I have to squint to see the guide on my 54" so bigger is needed lol. In our bedroom I think we have a 46" ?? It's not very far from our bed so it's plenty big. And in the basement we have around a 50" but we never go down there. Our TVs are older but get the job done. It's so hard for me to spend money on an item when I have something that already works. So I just wait until things break. I'm down to my last working HDMI port on the living room TV so once that one goes then I'll cheerfully buy a new 65-70"......See Moremike_kaiser_gw
