General Info on Eastern Redbud seedlings
Comments (9)there are a couple types of rebud ... and w/o a proper ID ... it is hard to give any specific info on its future performance ... second.. trees.. in general .. like a very high draining media in the pot ... and almost any bagged media is going to be too high in peat to favor the tree ... if you are limited to buying media... you should look into a cactus mix ... otherwise .. many peeps here like al's mix.. which is homemade.. perhaps someone has a link to that ... up here in MI ... Cercis canadensis .. the eastern redbud.. seeds wildly .. onto my wood mulch.. which is on top of mineral sand ... and which is usually about as dry as dry can get ... and i get hundreds of seedlings per year ... with no watering beyond what nature supplies... which leads me to the conclusion that ERedbud.. does not mind being dry ... which i tell you.. so you dont drown them in your pots ... and if you stop drowning them [not that you are, just meaning excessive watering] .. then you might not need much fertilizer ... but if they are off color.. so be it ... isnt redbud near native in NY .. the thought that you need to carry it from FL to NY.. cracks me up .. regardless.. live your dream ... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreEastern Redbud - Cause: Sections of tree suddenly appear dead?
Comments (11)Hi Everyone, First thank you for your comments and helpfulness. I have numerous pictures but at the present moment, I am uncertain as to how to post them...smiles. I have clipped a few edges to see if there were any green left to them and from the tips I would say no. As mentioned, right now, these two large branches do not have any flowers on them and look dead in appearance. If fact, I just spoke to a gentleman who sold me the tree a few years back and he was saying that the winters here in Illinois have been very bad on the Redbuds in fact to the point of him no longer carrying them due to all the one year guarantees he had lost. Smiles. This tree only has about 6 main branches and if I cut out the two, I have a feeling, it may then be best to cut the whole tree out given that it is not that big and all the diseases this tree is suseptible to. Right now, I am thinking of possibly a Kousa Dogwood given that I do not want something too large given that it will be situated next to a sidewalk. I would like something with decorative flowering and the possibly a maroon leaf during the year. Again, I am in Illinois. Thanks, MEtten...See MoreEastern Redbud - Seedlings messy?
Comments (15)My C. canadensis does reseed pretty willingly, and since it can be a short-lived tree, the one by the back door is in fact a seedling off a previous redbud. Not a big deal, They get mowed or weeded, but I feel like a murderer when I do it. Get a lot of enjoyment out of ours and it's a pretty little tree even out of bloom. If they pop up in the right place, we just leave them and let them grow. The seedlings are delicate and pull out easily and don't have roots to China. It's a pretty un-fussy tree....See MoreEastern Redbud plants
Comments (3)I'm going to resist the temptation of commenting on the dangers of buying uninspected plant material from eBay sellers. As to your question: the goal is to keep the trees dormant but with enough warmth to prevent the roots from freezing solid which can kill the plant. The leaves have dropped, so the trees have presumably entered dormancy. They do not now need any light. You need to be careful with the watering - don't let the planting medium become dust dry, but do not water every few days. Over saturation can easily lead to rot. If it's already very wet, I'd replant into just moist "soil". Redbuds also have very thin bark which can lose moisture even when they're dormant. Anything you can do to keep some humidity around the trees without saturating the planting medium - a cellar is often a better place than a garage - will help. There are two important factors for redbuds. The first is that redbuds grown from seed or propagated vegetatively very strongly duplicate the hardiness of the parent(s). Redbuds derived from trees growing in MN will be far hardier than ones with VA paren(s). The second is this: redbuds and a few other trees often enter a state of deep dormancy that needs to be broken by a process known as "sweating". I'm sure detailed instructions are available online, but, briefly, "sweating" involves significantly raising the temperature and humidity level around the plants....See Moreplumstupid
