Redbuds are beautifully graceful in flower before the leaves emerge. However, once they are in full leaf they loose this gracefulness and become heavy looking (unless the low hanging branches are removed to reveal the stems). Redbud is an understory plant (naturally occurring on the edge of a forest where conditions include rich soil and part shade). In the north, they can suffer from early spring temperature fluctuations where the flow of sap during a warm spell is suddenly halted when temperatures plummet. This can kill some or all of the above ground growth but the plant usually recovers by sending up new shoots from the root.

One of our favorite ornamental trees! Up here in zones 4/5 we rarely see the pods forming on Redbud.

For those in northern areas try the variant ' Minnesota strain'. Redbud, like many of our native plants, occur over a wide range of hardiness zones. Unfortunately, plants without adapted cold tolerance are often sold in zones 4-5 and can disappoint in flower bud and overall hardiness. Consider purchasing from a nurseryman who knows what he/she is selling.
