Windows Media Player or the like

We use "youhaveavoicemail@gmail.com" at work to send voicemails to our email address. We can listen to them on the computer thru Windows Media Player. However I cannot listen on my phone as it says "the player does not support this type of audio file". Any thoughts on something that may work?

I have a hunch about why you're having a problem. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

There are many different audio file formats and several are not "out of the box" supported by some smartphones or devices. One obvious one that could be used in this case might be the Microsoft "WMA" file format, since opening it on a PC has the file associated with Window Media Player.

What file format does this system use? If the audio file is attached to an email, download it to your PC, go to the containing folder and look at the file type (the three characters tot he right of the "." in the file name. It could be WMA, or MP3, or OGG, or others but likely not MP3 because that's supported by all devices.

Go to the app store (either Apple Itunes store or the Andoid Goggle play equivalent), search for the file type, and you'll most certainly find a free app that will play the file type. If my hunch is right, that should solve the problem. You may need to set up a file association for the app but likely not. Please report back on your experience.

I upgraded from MediaPlayer 10 to 11 and was impressed with how much better it looked. Have done quite a few DVDs using Photo Story 3 for Windows and with the Media 10 it was great. Now I can run one Photo Story from the Media Player 11 and then it freezes. I have to do the control-alt-delete and then reboot. I can still play the music. but not the Photo Story. There is something I am doing wrong or something is missing, but can't figure it out. Can you help me? Have Windows XP, new custom-made computer. Thanks. Dora Lou

are you opening the windows media player program and hitting the help button there in the program? It is likely 12 I think all windows 7 came with 12 and my guess is that yes you would have the latest version. I use VLC player myself instead and prefer it. as you can see here it is compatible with 7 VLC Media Player VLC

VLC used to hiccup at the start of every FLAC file I played. In both the Linux version and the Windows version on different machines. Several updates and it eventually got fixed but until then I used Media Player Classic. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ Or just for audio, Foobar: http://www.foobar2000.org/ Windows Media Player pretended not to even know the FLAC codec existed so I never had use for it. VLC amazed me by playing RAR'd up DVD(VOB) movies before they even finished downloading. Public Domain movies of course. The only thing you may want to watch if you install VLC is that they may try to slip in some useless(to me) toolbar, change your search engine or whatever. Just uncheck the box unless you want it. Actually, I had forgotten MPC until I started writing this so I installed it. To its credit, it didn't try to slip anything else into the install, which I like.

Use your head with this - a PC isn't a CD player, it's even better. Put any and all your CDs into the PC just once, rip them (transcribe the music files into computer files), and then play them an infinite number of times using the sound files stored on your hard drive. Either WMP or Itunes will do the rip. If the CD can be read from one PC and not the other, rip the CD on the working PC and then move the files to the other. Or, rip all the working files on the "bad" PC, and use the working PC to rip and transfer just the one non-working file. A concept that's hard for some to grasp - if you're trying to do something and it doesn't work, it's unlikely the solution is to do the same thing over and over again. Instead, try something different.

Yes. Same answer, WAV isn't supported natively and you need an app to play it. WAV is an uncompressed file, a variant of PCM that's used on audio CDs

Power Amp Music player seems to be the best regarded app in the Android world, if that's what you have. There are others to choose from too.

VLC for Android worked perfect. Free in the App Store. Once you had me look at at the file the light went on and I knew what to look for. Thanks Snidely I appreciate the help!!
