Windows Media Player 12? file types

In previous versions of WMP, you could select file types you wanted the player to play. From what I can tell, that is no longer possible in WMP12. Is that true, and how do you find the version number of WMP? The "About" selection in Help is gone.

What operating system are you using?

If your missing that "About" feature, seems like something is wrong, open and close windows media player, reboot the computer, see if you can get that feature back.

Windows Media Player 12 comes as part of Windows 7.

"In Step 4, you have choice to choose selected file type to play as default with Windows Media Player. You need to click on "Choose defaults for this program" and then select file types that you want to associate with Windows Media Player."

Guess I wasn't clear about what I was asking before. I have a new pc with windows 7. On my old XP pc, I use third party software to manage and play mp3 music files. I had to go into WMP-11 tools>options>file types and deselect MP3 so WMP wouldn't try to play them. I just want to do the same on the new windows 7 machine.

Canibus, The email was from a known friend. There were 3 attachments which were pics of the friend and probably this one was also. No, I had not asked for the WMP skin. Just a fluke I guess. I'll do the reinstall tomorrow. Thanks. Sue

VLC used to hiccup at the start of every FLAC file I played. In both the Linux version and the Windows version on different machines. Several updates and it eventually got fixed but until then I used Media Player Classic. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ Or just for audio, Foobar: http://www.foobar2000.org/ Windows Media Player pretended not to even know the FLAC codec existed so I never had use for it. VLC amazed me by playing RAR'd up DVD(VOB) movies before they even finished downloading. Public Domain movies of course. The only thing you may want to watch if you install VLC is that they may try to slip in some useless(to me) toolbar, change your search engine or whatever. Just uncheck the box unless you want it. Actually, I had forgotten MPC until I started writing this so I installed it. To its credit, it didn't try to slip anything else into the install, which I like.

First I did a restore to remove two updates the evening of September 7, 8:36/8:38. The restore appeared to be successful, but the problem continues. So I restored back about one week and the restore terminated in "...did not complete successfully... system files and settings not changed" It went on to suggest I "temporarily disable anti-virus software" I couldn't find any way to disable Avira AntiVirus. But, I decided to try to view a picture form the desk-top, it worked this time, so I tried a video clip and it too now works. These were the two problems I noted ... go figure. Given I have removed several Microsoft updates, should I now go back to Microsoft and ask for a "Check of Updates"?

Can't get Windows Media Player 11 to load

Tried the START>PROGRAMS> thing and WMP10 came right up. Maybe it's working correctly and I just don't know it. I was sent what I think is called a streaming video and when I tried to play at first even when manually opening WMP10, it wouldn't play. Not sure what I did, but now if I open it manually it plays. I was under the impression that it would open automatically. Should it? Then again, do I really need or want WMP11. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The link Z provided is what your looking for. You just have to uncheck WMP's file association for MP3.
