Let's Chic-ify the Game Room
Pour yourself a cosmo and kick back on a chaise for a stylish football party even non-watchers can love
Football season has arrived, and we know what that means: Fans everywhere are perfecting their media or living rooms, creating the ultimate pad to watch the game with friends. However, it seems like such rooms have taken on a rather stereotypical decorative stance: dark rooms in dark basements with dark upholstery. Why can’t we watch the games in spaces with a little more style? That said, I’ve organized a few photos to inspire us to rethink the home game room, and how we can do so. In other words, let’s chic-ify football Saturday, shall we?

This room not only affords plenty of seating, but it’s bright and cheery while reflecting a contemporary color scheme. Not that there’s anything wrong with sectionals or recliners, but I rather like the fact that neither are in sight in this sophisticated space.
It’s so common to turn basement rooms into the media room, but often there’s more space on the main floor. Why is this room chic? The beautiful hardwood floors reflect light streaming in from the outdoors while the dark leather furniture balances the pops of color with a masculine edge. Why is it perfect for a football party? Like I already said: space, space, space!
We all know football parties get crowded. People are spread all over couches, they’re scouting snacks, they’re running around and pretending they’re IN the game. Here’s my point: Instead of squishing all the furniture together, try to space it out to create walking room. It will prevent your party from feeling claustrophobic.
Okay, for the die-hards out there, you may want to brace yourself. I’m about to drop a cold, hard fact. We’re all just not that into the game (don’t hate!). If you haven’t already banished me, then I’ll explain why I'm bringing this up, and what makes this room both chic and great for football: By creating several different functional seating areas, the true fans can get right up close and personal to the TV while those of us who use these types of events as social hour can gather elsewhere and talk about the Kardashians.
You know those really cold November games? Where everyone in the stands look like frozen-parka popsicles? Well, I imagine you’d feel pretty good about watching those same games in a cozy, spacious living room with a glowing fire to keep you toasty warm. Just another benefit to the chic game room.
Don’t forget the attic! These spaces are no longer for storage: by adding skylights and brightening it with white paint, this room becomes both cozy and sophisticated. By outfitting it with a sink and mini fridge, it becomes perfect for game time.
Don’t worry, not all hope for basement media rooms is lost. But here’s the secret: bright colors! The simple addition of a turquoise couch, draperies and rug gives this largely brown room a fresh new vibe. And who wouldn’t want to watch the game on a couple of chaise lounges? With a cosmo?
Or, jazz up your basement scheme by thinking outside the box when it comes to seating. Couches are great, but the market is filled with more sophisticated options. This double leather chaise has got to be as comfortable as it is chic.
The game is played in the great outdoors, so why not invite the great outdoors into your home? Choose a room near large windows or sliding glass doors and enjoy the same refreshing breeze as the players themselves. Besides, natural light makes everything more chic.
Or, better yet, move the whole media room outside! If you’ve got a covered patio that can do the job, there’s no better place to catch the game. Plus, the outdoor fabric market has really improved its range of stylish, durable fabrics that will make your patio as tasteful as it is sports-filled.
