We're thinking about building or buying a greenhouse
Comments (10)Janet, I'm just the hunter/gatherer/builder while my wife is the grower/gardener. But I would build it where you want it, and make it structurally sound enough to withstand the elements, though I'd probably stop-short of making it hurricane-proof! In hindsight we probably should have built ours with at least a LITTLE protection from the midday sun, but since we didn't I have to make an exhaust fan/shutter system for it and possibly an evaporative cooler as well, a shade cover too at some point, regardless we do fully expect that we'll have to completely vacate it probably sometime in mid-Spring. You had said something about using windows you have--also that you need to "learn how to use it". Maybe you just want (need?) a comfy place to put a potting bench and overwinter some plants--whatever I say build what you think you want/can afford and go from there....See MoreNeed Ideas for two bathrooms in house we're buying - PICTURES
Comments (6)trtsmb, true, just have to wait for some funds to come before I can redo it. I guess maybe I'll just do our bathroom and when the time comes to sell, if buyers would want a tub, will give some allowance or have one put back - we plan on being here a long time - may die in it for all we know! jjazzy, hmmm, I never thought the option of having a floating vanity! Where would you end up putting the register though? Great idea w/the vanity though. Thanks! I wouldn't make the closet go in to the b/r - no need and would lose too much space. monicae, couldn't wait that long, esp in that purple bathroom as it is - maybe other changes in the house I can wait, but not in there. I'd wait in the 2nd bathroom though, that would be easier for sure. THANKS!!!!!...See MoreThinking of buying house that needs major work -- am I nuts??
Comments (6)I'm doing it now and am in the 6th week....okay I have my good days and my bad days. How much of it will you do yourself? If it's just contracting and paying for it..I think you'll manage just fine...sure there'll be headaches but seek out a good contractor to handle most of them for you. I actually enjoy being the general contractor, I like that feeling of "yeah, I can do this!" Now, I've flooded two bathrooms...trying to hold your finger in pressurized water pvc pipes while your husband tries to find the cutoff at the street...not fun. Other than that, I've peeled of 3 rooms of wallpaper, I've pulled up linoleum and have tiled two rooms (one I had help with)....I've painted 3 rooms...I designed and paid my cousin to frame 1100 unfinished square footage...I've lined up my subs to finish out that part...I gutted the kitchen and am installing new flooring in every single room of the house...I'm bringing in 3 cows from a neighbor to help manage the pastures on this dream horse farm I bought...because I don't have time to buy the horses yet while I'm fixing this house up...so instead of gazing dreamingly out my breakfast window with my built in seating (still being built) and seeing my horses lovingly eating pasture..I'll see 3 contented cows. Yeah, it's a struggle sometimes....I got home at 9:30..spent all day running around finding a vanity getting a better deal on a granite top for it....picking out yet another gallon of paint to try...putting grout down over my tiles that look unusually orange when they were taupe at the showroom...darn those compact flourescents! There's always something to do...you may not have time to do it...but in 6 months, you'll know that this place is yours and the memories from building it with your dh will be there to amuse you. We joke that our house has been baptized twice (those floods were not fun, but we've got the cleanest duct work and subflooring now) Enjoy and have a sense of humor!:) Tara...See MoreLots to do in house we're buying - need ideas with grout color
Comments (5)I see a couple options for you. One is to seal the grout thoroughly and possibly on an annual basis. There are also robot floor cleaners for tile now - like a Roomba with water. I don't know how well they work but I would check into those. The other option is to consider a grout stain that would let you change the color of the grout you have. My only caution is ... find some pics of what a whole room looks like with a dark grout on light tiles. It can be very busy looking. The look you have now sounds kind of calm and like it fades into the background, as opposed to standing out. I sort of like what you are describing now, so I would want to find a way to make it easier to live with thru preventative sealing and automated cleaning....See MoreDLM2000-GW
