Odds Of Developing Diabetes / Lifestyle Factors
Comments (13)Wouldn't a change in the diagnostic criteria for a disease result in a one-time jump in the reported rate of the disease (maybe over a few years), rather than a steady increase over multiple decades? For diabetes specifically, we know the average weight of Americans has increased considerably in the past decades. '' average height of a man aged 20-74 years increased from just over 5'8' in 1960 to 5'9' in 2002, while the average height of a woman the same age increased from slightly over 5'3' 1960 to 5'4' in 2002. Meanwhile, the average weight for men aged 20-74 years rose dramatically from 166.3 pounds in 1960 to 191 pounds in 2002, while the average weight for women the same age increased from 140.2 pounds in 1960 to 164.3 pounds in 2002. Though the average weight for men aged 20-39 years increased by nearly 20 pounds over the last four decades, the increase was greater among older men: Men between the ages of 40 and 49 were nearly 27 pounds heavier on average in 2002 compared to 1960. Men between the ages of 50 and 59 were nearly 28 pounds heavier on average in 2002 compared to 1960. Men between the ages of 60 and 74 were almost 33 pounds heavier on average in 2002 compared to 1960.'' Granted, taller people tend to weigh more, but when I look at some height-to-weight charts, a 1 inch height difference for a man translates to only about 5-6 lb. Comments (0)I have a system I bought years ago an at internet aquarium supplier, which I've modified over the years. I use the Pentek washable filters. The neighborhood water supply here is extra mucky seeming, so I added a pre-pre-filtering stage a while ago. I now have: 50 micron, 10 micron, 2 micron carbon, and a backup catalytic carbon. The 50 micro catches particles so large they are often discretely visible to the naked eye...that's how bad the water supply here is. Little black bits of rust or whatnot. Today I went to rinse off the 50 micron filter, opened it with my filter wrench and even before pouring it, was hit was a nasty odor. What it resembled is really surprising: 2, 4-D. Yep, the chlorinated herbicide. Not a little strong. Very strong. No normal person would be willing to drink water smelling this way. The water out of the tap, which I brush my teeth with etc., definitely does not smell so bad. It does have a slightly chlorine odor as you would expect. I'm not worried about it being in my final supply, because I have a post-carbon filter after the storage tank. (so it will have gone through 3 carbon filters in addition to the membrane) But I wonder why it is forming. I know the reaction of organic material and chlorine for disinfection can form chlorinated organic compounds. But clearly something else is going on here, locally I mean. I wonder if I have a microorganism living in the fiter housing that is causing this to happen at a higher rate? By feeding off all the junk trapped there, and chlorinating it in the process. (I believe the reason these compounds form at all in munipical water supplies is due to the actions of microorganisms) Anyone seen something like this before, or I should say smelled something like it?...See MoreAny new developements on Nuna popping beans?
Comments (25)Dar we were looking at the weather map on TV the other night, a good part of the States is much, much, hotter then the usual, I pray you all get some rain. Our June has given us a few unusually hot days but right now we are back to cooler days and rain, our typical June weather. Last summer we had days that were hotter than anything in recorded history, in over 100 years. Not knowing what to expect when I planted the Nunas you sent me I only planted 2 of the numbered varieties you sent and I have to admit it took a lot of tries to get any of the commercial variety to germinate, perseverance paid off I finally have 3 plants in a 5 gallon tub, I can add a bamboo pole for them to climb on if needed. All are planted in tubs so they could be moved to the greenhouse if needed to finish off. By the way the leaves on the commercial variety are much smaller then the other two. Once I see how they develop and grow here I'll not be such a mother hen about the whole deal :), Right now the tubs are encased in copper mesh, this is if not the slug, it certainly is the snail capital of the world. I could give Floral a run for the money on who has the most LOL. Annette...See MoreBuilder Development New Home: Home Theater
Comments (9)Thanks for the thoughts so far!! While there will be plenty of projects and upgrades in the near and far future for this house but I'm trying to make sure that when the dust settles most of the key things are ready to go from day one! Also, including these things in the build/loan simply helps them happen where if they were not, we would have to wait and compromise on choice at that! Also, I already have a big project for the home theater that I need to get to, my custom sub using this driver: http://loudmagnet.com/html/pdf/CSS-SDX15-data-121107.pdf It is in a temporary enclosure at the moment but I'm looking to build a IB box with a very low target frequency. As to the build, it will be installed by reasonably skilled techs, but I will be doing the design with help. I have been working with AV since the 80s and while I'm no expert per say, I'm very comfortable in that space....See Morehostatakeover swMO
