I have been a steady customer since I discovered that they are not far from me in Saco (They are located a couple miles from the Biddeford exit of the Maine Turnpike as you head west on Rt. 111 toward Arundel. Look on the right side of the road a short distance farther from the Shell gas station you will pass on the left and note that it is an AGWAY store and nursery and that is the name you will see on the sign, not Green Mountain Transplants. I love to browse the greenhouses, picking out "plugs" or larger plants. You can mix and match at will when in the nursey instead of ordering a full flat of one variety. I have bought almost all my herbs there and many flower plants especially, as well as some veggies. If one has some patience a $3.50 hydrangia will soon equal the much bigger/older plant bought elsewhere for many times the price. Gardening is all about patience as I am learning in year three of my vegetable garden and flowerbeds. When you buy small, low cost but healthy plugs and small plants your money goes a long way! The store has everything from gardening tools to canning supplies to gazing globes, and from bulbs to birdseed. the owners are very nice to talk to and moved to have a bigger place and to be closer to a greater number of customers beyond the mailorder option. I am confident you will find it worth the trip. Wait several weeks before you go though for it is still too early to really have enough to see and buy.

Ahhhh, a question that I can answer! Green Mountain .......that is short for www.greenmountainhosta.com which is in Vermont, land of the Green Mountains which are a geographic reality. Do not mistake "greenmountain" with Green HILL Hosta Nursery or www.hostahosta.com which is in North Carolina and is where Nancy and Bob Solberg are located. If you wish to deal with NC plants, must not make a MOUNTAIN out of that HILL. :) And, MissKitty, the way I understand it with a division of a mature plant, you can look at the root system and find that there is a hard piece of crown which has been sliced off the mature clump of that particular hosta. Each eye of the clump is connected by the growing living crown, and that is why they use the term "shovel prune" or recommend cutting with a big knife to get a division of the plant. Okay, if I've not said this properly or left out something, I invite corrections from the cognoscenti. :)

GW is some great plants at even better prices. I have ordered from them for the past 2 years. Last fall I ordered and they were not totally dormant yet. They grew and I had to almost put some down myself in December. The last ones out this year was the GM order. They performed like champs but just came back last and compared to the spring order I think I set them back a little with the warm temps here. This year with the tree removal and soon re-roofing I have not ordered this fall. I have considered just ordering in the spring and let the growers keep them cool one more time. Bk, I would keep them cool and dark so the new eyes will not get confused. Sometimes I wish I had a root cellar for such times. Maybe a dark spot in the garage. Good luck GM has some great plants. ohhh yea, that IS a massive root system for a new buy. I have had Green Mountain on my radar for a few hostas, and I have studied their website frequently.... just a minor budget issue of mine holding me back until a later date.
