Did I Make A Mistake?

Until now I have only been succesful at knockout roses. This year I bought some climbers and some heirlooms. I pack them in compost, fertizer and peat moss. I've been watering every other day and now I'm noticing that I'm not seeing much drainage. Is the peat moss going to keep my roots soaked. Also its going to rain all week here in 6a. I have bare roots. Is this going to drown them. These are in huge pots right now. I can manage them back to a spot under cover where I can control how much water they get.....would that be best. Eventually though the climbers have to be moved to the spot near their trellis wall. By the way I did this because I found if I pack my roots in peat moss they survive the harsh winters we have here and I dont have any other plants that dont like wet feet and are in containers.
