Did I make a mistake buying A Shropshire Lad?
Comments (42)Thought I would hop on here to share my 2 cents on ASL. I have 3 along a fence in a fairly prominent area & are about 5 years old. Every summer/ fall I consider replacing, but spring comes along and I forgive him for all his shortcomings. Very small climbers as you can see in photo as compared to many others I have. I have to spray for disease, but being in Georgia that's to be expected of most DAs. I have found if I give him more feelings I get some blooms throughout the season outside of the flushes, but nothing like a nearby hedge of Abe Darby which blooms all season in flushes. As a side note on the Eden suggestion. Beautiful rose. Whenever it blooms for me I feel driven to go have a whiff, then I remember it doesn't have a fragrance. Sigh.... here is pic ASL today ( 3 bushes on fence, carefree celebration is in front) in mid-August. About 5-6 buds, couple flowers...Not terrible, but not a rockstar for me. Comments (10)I think yours is probably mislabeled Mendocino. I went out to specifically check for thorns on my plant, which is blooming now, and saw a few, non-obtrusive ones, but only down low on the plant. You could cut a bucket of flowers and not find a thorn anywhere near a flower (and actually, I did, and it won in the OGR bouquet category at last week's Cal Coastal Rose Soc. show in Carlsbad). I would think this rose would be easy to train if only you have a big enough space to start with and you kept after it -- the new canes are prolific and are mostly from the base of the plant and very lax. It would be nice flattened along a fence, but I don't think these canes would be long enough to go over the top of an arch. Mine is about 6 feet tall by 5 feet wide and is in a place where it hides an old tool shed from the rest of the yard, and it does an admirable job of that -- so I just let it sprawl there....See MoreHad to move/translplant Madame Plantier...she looks terrible help
Comments (4)It sounds like you transplanted your Mme. Plantier the same way I transplant roses. Though you did the best you could to take as much roots as possible with the plant when you moved it, the remaining roots don't appear to be adequate to support the water needs of the plant. Shading it is a great idea. If this isn't enough and some of the canes wither and die, go ahead and cut these off. I doubt you've killed her....See MoreQuestion about Madame Plantier
Comments (26)Jeri, I will have to wait on spring for the bloom. It is a once bloomer that has been growing on the back side of a church-small white pink edged sprays. It crawls over the 6 foot fences and is at least that wide-but no idea how big it would get if allowed. Some one might have planted it or it might be some long forgotten plant that the rootstock took over. The church was built in the 60's but it was an older area was redeveloped in the early 50's. I really do not know what the property was before the 50's. It is in an area that a small creek might have run past before the development, I know that across the street the ball fields area part of a flood plain and I remember the news covering a few forgotten grave sites just up the hill from there (near Juvenal hall) And I think there used to be an old stage coach stop about the same area as the old graveyard (the building burnt down in one of the fires years ago) There has been a lot of road work and development in that area (Hollister Ave) that changed drainage and properties....See MoreEmbothrium
