Madame Plantier, trained on an arch or pillar?

Years ago, I got a band of Madame Plantier but we were under construction so it's been living in a little pot on my hot concrete patio waiting for the day it could go in the ground which will hopefully be this Spring.
In researching how this plant grows, I saw several mentions online (can't find them now) that Madame Plantier can be trained onto a fence or an arch or a pillar. Since my planting space (from house to lawn or walkways) are fairly narrow, I'm wondering if I could us a tripod, wrought iron pillar, or even an arch, to contain it's sprawling growth habit and grow it more vertically (and, I'm hoping, more narrow overall.)
Is this possible? How difficult (for a very newbie with minimal actual rose planting knowledge)?
Any recommendations on which, of the options, would be best, given it's natural growth habits. I've never actually seen it get big because in the pot it has stayed very small and shrub-like.
Thanks,
KMama
