Did I make a big mistake in buying Ace Hardware potting soil?
Comments (15)Do it now. There is a full moon. I just replanted a bunch of seedlings last nite into larger containers and left them to get the full benefit of the full moon. If you have the room, start a compost pile. When I go to Menards I usually stop by the 25%off torn bags section and buy one or two bags of manure or potting soil. I mix this in with the finished compost bin or in the fall in the bin that is cooking. Mix it well and after adding a small amount of clean sand, I use it for containers. You can use a wheelbarrow or a tarp on the ground and mix what you have with regular dirt from an area of the yard and make a mix that should be ok. If you are container gardening you will be adding some nutrients later anyway....See MoreCeiling fan choices... don't make the same mistake I did!
Comments (1)Can you buy a shorter down rod? I had to do that in a previous house once. Thank for the tip about flush mounts. I have to pick our lighting out today....See MorePEGASUS, LEANDER, A SHROPSHIRE LAD- Could you please help me out?
Comments (17)Rebecca, I garden in zone 5 now, but for decades I had a zone 4 rose garden and I experimented with every darn climber I could find that anyone told me would be hardy in zone 4. And I can also tell you that Ameri2nal is correct that wrapping in burlap is not going to do the trick. Been there, tried that - no real success. Your Johann Strauss row is lovely - but it is planted next to the foundation of the house (always a bit warmer) and you say that it is cut down to the soil level every year and regrows. That's often the case in zone 4 - you can find roses that properly planted (as you are doing) will survive and bounce back - but in a climber where you really want long canes to survive from year to year, just survival of what is below ground is not enough. I'd be shocked if you have any surviving cane above the snow line on your original 3 roses you were inquiring about. And I must add that I'm dubious about live cane on Reine des Violettes, either. I never was successful with that one in zone 4. I have it planted now in my zone 5 garden, but I don't know yet how it will have survived its first winter here - although it has been a mild one. But I'm not holding my breath. I can tell you that there is a virtually thornless climber called Victorian Memory (AKA Isabella Skinner) that I grew for years in zone 4. Well, really it is a very tall shrub, but it can be pruned and trained to grow on a trellis. I had it tied up and over one side of a copper arch for many years. I think there are still my photos of it on that you can view at HelpMeFind...probably you'd have to click on "older" photos. It is available at Rogue Valley Roses and it is one that I would recommend for your zone. http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.3416.1&tab=1 Anne...See MoreHelp! Did I make a mistake buying Simply White with Chantilly Lace?
Comments (18)I am adding to an old thread here but I have a similar dilemma... I am painting my new bedroom walls silver chain /harbor gray.. I was going to use simply white on ceiling and trim but I questioned the lack of brightness in simply white on my ceiling .. I have northern and eastern light and some southern but it doesn’t make it in due to a farmers porch. I was advised due to this I might want to try Chantilly lace on the ceiling and that simply white trim could work but it’s doesn’t seem so ? Maybe the gray is causing my dilemma .. i am used to working with two colors not three... I also have vaulted ceilings and a tray... on top of it I need to come up with a complimentary color for master bath.. or stay the with the same ?Any help would be MUCH appreciated!...See Moreblendguy
