Need Something for a Wall....Suggestions?
Comments (16)Perhaps a corkboard to which you could post appropriate messages, photos of previous guests, inspiring quotes or jokes for your guests' information and entertainment. Might help make them feel welcome if you post a note saying there are cookies on the counter or fruit in the frig in case they get hungry in the middle of the night. I also like original handmade art and think of the framed print I bought at a yard sale, strictly for the frame. However when I looked closely at it I realized the seashell print could be embellished by adding real shells and some jute twine as the frame was deep, almost shadow box style. With the frame painted white it's a nice piece for my guest bath wall and looks like a lot more than the 25 cents I paid for it. Frames are incredibly inexpensive in thrift stores and yard sales and can be easily painted and creative artwork made from all different types of mediums. Kids' art could be framed, even finger painting by very young potential artists looks good framed!...See MoreMaster suite or guest bath + remodel?

Comments (21)@cpartist: Thanks for the image. We've previously discussed doing something similar but with an attached bathroom to effectively create a garage apartment. Unfortunately, the windows shown on the back wall are actually only skylights. If we close off the double-mulled window at the left side of the existing playroom to create a bedroom, that leaves 1 skylight for the playroom and hallway. Even with adding another skylight the areas will be dark. Also not sure about creating that bedroom without direct access to a bathroom, which forces guest/children to walk through a playroom to utilize it. The more we look at this and consider everyone's comments, the more we think our hallway plan above addresses the most needs for our family. If we, or some future buyer, needs a downstairs en-suite then that could be added without difficulty. Thoughts?...See MoreAll bedrooms upstairs with guest suite on main?
Comments (12)I have lived in both recently. One advantage of a downstairs master is sound control. I know it sounds strange and is certainly design dependent, but sounds travels vertically a bit easier. One specific thing I do is build so that there are 2 doorways from master bedroom to rest of house so that helps on the horizontal sound transmission. No way to do that between floors. If the master bedroom is above the kitchen or living room, sound will travel. Even if not - the "diagonal" sound transmission is harder to stop also. One unforeseen downside of 1st floor master is comfort level about windows being left open at night. It was really unremembered because we had it 15 years ago and it was an issue. And then we moved more urban and built 1st floor master. Speaking of commutes, a big commute can be an issue for coffee drinkers.... (Typing 10 feet away from my Miele which is another 15 ft from Master bed - it is almost perfectly centered). The same issue comes up with laundry....See MoreUser
