Looking for 09 heirlooms that grow well in sandy Williamsburg, VA
Comments (9)Gosh I'm all ears on this thread. This year I built 3 raised beds (4' x 8' x 20") & have learned that Pleasure Island is the land o' destructive insects (I have also learned that frass totally grosses me out). I used soil for the raised beds we scraped when slating in a formerly jungly side yard - it is quite black & very amended from years of wax myrtle & Iliagnus but still sand. I am all ears for tomatoes which handle heat/humidity & are sweet/tart/umami delicious. Open to all size recs - thinking of Mule Team, Arkansas Traveller, Creole, Black Krim, break O Day, Carbon, Constoluto Genovese, Tomande,Jeff Davis & others (LOL). Would love a big tasty yellow bicolor that could handle our wretched summers. Used to eat these as a kid in western NC - they were 1 slice makes a sandwich - plenty of tart, sweet, meat & gel to soak the white bread/mayo - Mmmm, but that was way up in the mountains & I am now within 200 yards of the ocean. Looking for some info on a strain called "Isis Brandy" - read mention of it but no source (cross between Isis Candy cherry & Brandywine). Have Tomato Growers Exchange catalog, bedtime reading, waiting for more. Thanks folks!...See MoreHeaded to Williamsburg VA for mini vacation
Comments (10)Check the weather. Right now the forecast for the next five days is looking good. However, just in case, if the weather isn't good, I would save Jamestown for the bad weather day because you can do the museum inside whereas Colonial Williamsburg is a lot of outside walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Sunday is the warmest day in which case that would be a good day to be inside an air conditioned museum. Saturday morning is the farmer's market in Merchant's Square. The Fat Canary is a wonderful restaurant....pricey and a little noisy unless you go to the 5:30 seating or you can sit outside with a lighter menu. Other good restaurants include La Yaca in the Kingsmill shopping center, Opus 9 (Steaks, etc.)in New Town (great for lunch - lots of $10.00 selections), Ichi Ban in New Town (Asian) and inexpensive, Bone Fish in New Town or Bon Amici in New Town. For less pricey fare Sal's by Victor (Italian) In Williamsburg Shopping Center also Bangkok Gardens on Richmond Rd, a Thai Restaurant...not too fancy but good food. I have never eaten at the taverns. Generally not noted for the food and a little pricey but it's probably a fun experience. It will take you every bit of the two days to do both Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. They do not publicize discounts but if you are a school teacher you get a discount, if you are in a wheelchair, if you are the caretaker for someone in a wheelchair you get a discount, or if you volunteer at another museum, you get in free (be sure to bring identification pass if you are a volunteer) If you have some free time after Jamestown, you might want to visit Yorktown. Enjoy your visit. Hope you have great weather and a great visit....See MoreTips on visiting Williamsburg, VA
Comments (9)Sorry to be so late in responding to your post. Busy, busy, busy. Would love to meet with you while you're visiting, but not sure we'll be here. We are heading for the Outer Banks in November, but not sure of the dates yet. Usually like to go in October but missed so much golf this year, I wanted to put it off until after the golf season. DH still working on getting our favorite place. I just heard yesterday at bridge that they will be opening a new museum in Yorktown in October. They say it's wonderful. Also have a museum in Jamestown. If touring Colonial Williamsburg, start with the movie at the Visitor's Center. You can also pick up a schedule of what special activities are going on for the week. Williamsburg has changed considerably the past 20 years. Someone mentioned the Pottery....you can forget that. It use to be a fun place with some great buys but they tore down the decrepit buildings and rebuilt. Not worth the time! Lots of new restaurants. Several in town on Duke of Gloucester Street (DOG). Just outside of town is New Town. Opus 9 is great for lunch....they have a special menu 10 for $10 and if you like fried oysters, they have a fried oyster appetizer on the regular menu that is delicious and more than enough for a meal. In New Town there's also a Bonefish. I know it's a chain, but the food there is pretty good and pretty reliable. One of the better chains. My favorite restaurant is LeYaca on High Street....just out of town.... both for lunch and dinner. Fat Canary on DOG street is good, but pricey and noisy. DOG Street Bistro is good but extremely noisy!! The taverns have never been noted for their food however, the chef from our club just left and is now in charge of the Taverns so even I would be willing to give them another try. I think Christiana Campbell's would be the one to go to....See MoreI have acorns from these Live oak trees in Williamsburg,Va
Comments (0)The acorns are smaller than any Live oak acorns I've ever seen, so someone waaaayyyy down south should try them, maybe they're Myrtle oaks? WEll, if they are growing in Virginia I guess they'll grow in the south anywhere, near the coast or in a nice warm spot. I will send them to someone for free, I'll keep a couple and grow in a pot here in my basement. They may be Q.Virginiana, but they are smaller than any Q.Virginiana I've ever seen....See Moreparty_music50
