Oil Less Turkey Fryer

Hi All,

I had fried turkey for the first time this past Thanksgiving and it was delicious. I have to have one.

This one was done the old fashioned way but I was wondering if anyone has tried the oil less/infrared turkey fryers and what you all thought?

Does it taste the same as the one with oil? Is it easier than the one with oil?

As I understand, there is no such thing as oil-less fryers.

They are all bakers/roasters.

They will give you the same taste as baked or roasted birds.

I guess that was my question.

But they do say they are a fryer. I wonder how they get away with that?

Has anyone ever tasted a bird cooked in one of these.

Deep frying a turkey makes for a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have been deep frying since 2001, and even then it was unusual to do here in NJ. When I built a BBQ island I installed a large side burner suitable for a turkey fryer, and the island is ceramic tile so minimal fire risk. I see some of these things they sell at various big box stores and am amazed that people will use these dangerous looking contraptions. If you are going to fry a turkey make sure the vat holding the oil is as stable as can be. It is worth it to spend the extra $30 - $60 and get the better qaulity unit. The OP asked about what else to use it for and these would include Crab fest, lobster boil, or a heck of a lot of corn on the cobb. We also will fry an oven stuffer chicken sometimes. There are some huge upsides to frying the turkey, not the least of which is that they come out delicious. Guests kindly ask for leftovers, and there are some so many marinade, brine, and injection variations that you can get very creative. Additional upsides include freeing up oven space so we could use one oven for warming while baking in the second. This year I tried smoking a turkey in addition to the fryer and it too came out wonderful. We had a vigerous discussion on which people liked better (I think I liked the smoked better myself). And we have never had a leftover dinner as anticipated as the friday after this year. Everyone came back for a second meal this year even though we skipped the fine china.

Most every year someone burns the deck off their house when the oil overflows and ignites. Mostly yuppies because rednecks instinctivly put stuff out in the yard. A buddy uses his for a high powered canning operation he has set up in his pole barn. They make excellent corn boilers and fish fryers. In the winter a wind shield is required or the oil won't heat very well. Hillbillies have them best turkey fryers with all the curly tubes coming out of the top coverting corn sqeezin's into medicine.... the side handles are handy when following revnuers around the mountain top. As always dogs, children, and the very drunk should not be allowed around them. : ) lyra

I'm excited to cook this holiday, as it's been almost 23 years since my kids & I have been together 0n Turkey Day! linda the pot has a spigot and it's threaded into the stainless steel pot. There was some kind of gasket or caulking stuff securing the spigot from leaking. It kind of twisted out when I was cleaning it after probably 10 - 12 years of frying in it. The spigot makes draining the oil so much easier. I can get a new pot with a spigot, but the SS pot is very expensive with a spigot and I thought if I was going to spend that kind of $$ I might look at the electric fryer. It's tempting because it says it's even safe for inside cooking, but I would guess we'd continue to cook in the open garage (with all the appropriate precautions). If it's house safe, I wouldn't feel like we had to babysit it continually. Just wondering about the results of the electric set up.

I have had a Big Easy for 5 years and it tastes almost the same as deep fried. Some people like it better.

It does actually fry in it's own fat, the infrared is what makes the difference over baking and roasting. That is why they can call it fried.

You have the crispy skin and moist meat like deep fried. Without $40 worth of peanut oil that may go rancid before you use it again.

A suggestion if you decide to get one. Cover the breast and wings with foil for the first hour, leaving the back and lower parts exposed. Then remove the foil, the white meat cooks faster than the dark meat.

Ahh.. Fries in it's own fat. That makes sense.

I don't understand how that works? Turkeys don't have much fat. Just the skin, and that is very little fat relative to the quantity of meat.

No. It does not make sense. It is a vertical broiler, baker and roaster and no more. Yes, it can make the skin crispy, just like your oven can.

I will not spend the money for that if frying is what you want. It does not have much fat to fry itself. Fat rendered in that drips down quickly under heat.

BTW, broiling is cooking with infrared heat, infrared heating is not the same as frying.

I meant to put "fry" in quotes. You are correct, it doesn't have much fat. I inject mine with a butter and herb mix which adds fat.

I've tried the vertical broiler, baker and roaster things, you know the, "set it and forget it". They are more expensive and IMHO the results are not as good.

All of the electric broiler, baker, and/or roasters that I have used aren't even in the same class. I have never tried a gas oven.

Gas just heats better IMHO!

I'm not trying to talk the OP in to buying one but I love mine!

It actually is a useful cooker for some types of cooking.

For some food, the vertical cylindrical surround infrared heat source broils the food more evenly.

I agree!

It works great for ribs and roasts too!

I bought the hangers for ribs, no more uneven cooking.
