I've always wanted to have fried turkey but I'm too chicken!!

Did you inject it with anything? People do that... Maybe one of these days I'll get to try it at someone else's house, but it won't happen at mine, lol. It's good to hear your opinion about the flavor. I'm not quite so curious now.

What are you going to do with your fryer now? I've thought about getting one for fish frying and southern fried chicken. Just so I can do it outside and eliminate the mess.

It's such a "guy thing". In my clan, with all of the beer that would be consumed while the turkey was cooking, it's a recipe for disaster. I wouldn't want to be around to watch.

Properly fried turkey is delicious!

Juicy, moist, tender, flavorful inside.

Crispy outside.

And it's done in no time. No oven heating up the kitchen for hours on end.

And/or, the oven is free for other things.

Really Rusty - it was "properly PREPARED " just not very interesting. I didn't say it was bad, just nothing special for the amount of work that it takes. We much prefer the taste of all the herbs and lemon and garlic that are imparted to the meat when it is roasted on a bed of fresh herbs and the cavity is filled with the same.

I will definitely keep the fryer for our annual Fathers Day Catfish Fry - I cant STAND the smell of fried fish lingering in the house. I had gotten it in a barter from Craigs List last spring in exchange for weeding an elderly gentlemans flower bed in front of his townhouse so my investment in it isn't that big and I have room to store it. The other issue was the cost of the Peanut Oil - needing 4 gallons at $20 per gallon was a huge expense. There is no way this was worth the $100 cost for making the turkey alone.

Regarding the oil - Planters makes a peanut/vegetable oil specifically for frying turkey. Comes in a 3 gallon jug for about $21. I saw it yesterday at HD.

Alexa, that sure looks like something my family would do, LOL.

I have a turkey fryer out in the storage shed, I've never used it. Elery used it once, said the turkey was delicious but it's too much trouble and the oil costs too much. I've never had turkey deep fried so I can't say.

I've seen those bottles of oil at Menard's here too, I think. I might drag it out if I have a family party after walleye fishing!

Fried turkey is wonderful!...Usually it cooks so fast that there isn't time to consume enough beer to be dangerous....but I was really worried the Thanksgiving when my son agreed to cook the turkey for 4 of his friends....as well as his own family!!
Later I will search out a picture of his rig....a bit less Redneck and a little more "Chicago Gangsta" LOL!

Next time chunk up some potatoes and put them in that hot oil after you take the turkey out...oh and maybe some breaded mushrooms....and onion rings!!

I'm with you, Alexis. Had it once and didn't think it lived up to the hype. Then you have all that oil to deal with. That's more oil than I've ever used in my entire life, and they (the hosts) just threw it out. Seemed wasteful.

Maybe I'm just a traditionalist. I like roast turkey.

That is some contrap[tion LOL. The thought of deep frying a turkey does nothing for me. All that oil and work and worry and mess for NO gravy and NO stuffing..... not on your life! I'm sticking to the oven...maybe the smoker for a small one.

I remember a similar setup on an Alton Brown show about deep-fried turkey. It was one of his more entertaining episodes!

I have a huge turkey fryer but have never used it for that. We're kind of fixed on turkey in the Traeger.

But the kettle and propane burner get used big-time during canning season. I can blanch a year's worth of corn for the freezer or pre-cook beets for canning in no time and all the mess is outside.

Ohhhh I just love fried turkey. My BIL injects the turkey with a cajun seasoning and lets it marinate before frying it.

Most every year someone burns the deck off their house when the oil overflows and ignites. Mostly yuppies because rednecks instinctivly put stuff out in the yard.

A buddy uses his for a high powered canning operation he has set up in his pole barn. They make excellent corn boilers and fish fryers. In the winter a wind shield is required or the oil won't heat very well. Hillbillies have them best turkey fryers with all the curly tubes coming out of the top coverting corn sqeezin's into medicine.... the side handles are handy when following revnuers around the mountain top.

As always dogs, children, and the very drunk should not be allowed around them.

I love it and think he is pretty clever.

A few years ago I fried a turkey for Thanksgiving and we loved it. But frying it was a pain in the a**. I was very careful after reading in the paper that morning about how many fires are started by frying a turkey.

Last year I bought an electric turkey fryer because we were having a fish fry and I needed two fryers. I may never go back to the propane fryer. One of the problems I had with frying the turkey was keeping the oil at the proper temperature. Also, the electric fryer has a spigot to drain the oil, which I thought was great.

Fried turkey is very good, but my problem with it is that I really LOVE stuffing that is baked inside the bird.

If you fry, you don't get that.

I like the set up being used. FAR safer than standing beside the pot and dropping the bird in by hand.
