I've just joined the technical age and bought myself a Kindle Touch. I fully intend to keep reading "real" books but I thought the Kindle would come in handy for when I travel or want to download a library book or a free book online.

I know this was discussed previously but I can't find the post that talked about it. Does anyone remember the post or can tell me how to find the free books at Amazon? I went to their site but wasn't sure where to look for them. Also, do I remember correctly that I can download books to my Kindle from Project Gutenberg?

Hi Rouan, I brought up the Kindle Fire thread for the most up-to-date info we have discussed. The very last post tells about free stuff. Hopefully Frances will see this - she is the expert.

one of my fave sites is www.feedbooks.com and they offer books in kindle format all free, I have a lot of books on my kindle for pc from there and I get the epub version for my Pandigital. I just posted a list of new free kindle books on the thread here titled Pandigital and Nook owners so check that out. you can also sign up at amazon and they will email you with info when they add new free books to their free kindle books list. free Kindle books

I'm tired of looking at Virginia Woolf -- but I don't mind John Steinbeck. He looks more approachable. :) Since we moved three weeks ago -- and my books are all in storage - I'm really grateful for my Kindle. I agree about it being difficult to go back and re-read, unless you have highlighted the section. I think there may be a way to look at page numbers instead of the weird "location" numbers. I saw something about it on Amazon but haven't had time to explore it. It's also hard to read Terry Pratchett books on the Kindle because when you look at/for the footnotes, you lose your place.

I've had a Kindle for several years and the only thing I don't like about it is I can't leaf through the pages to find a reference. I don't have any sentimental attachment to "real" books and appreciate not having to decide if I like a book enough to keep it on a shelf. I do wish I could share Kindle books with people who don't own one, but I am unwilling to lend them my Kindle. I know some people swap the actual Kindle among friends and family who also own Kindles, but I don't have anyone close who also owns a one. It is so much more portable than a book and I always seem to haul around a lot of stuff so the small size is great. If I could afford it I would love to have a tablet to read on and to nuts around on while watching TV. However, I need one that I can download and read Amazon Kindle offerings on. I like dealing with Amazon. I am a terrible pragmatist and can't understand why a lot of people feel strongly that a real book is more pleasant than a Kindle. However, I do wish Kindle book pages were numbered so I could easily skip around and find a desired passage. If anything were to happen to my Kindle I would immediately buy another because I don't want to give up the convenience of an e-reader. If Kindle came out in a tablet with a display as astounding as the I-Pad Retina I would buy it immediately. So far, they haven't matched the fabulous clarity of the Retina. Nancy

I mostly use the library (which is a county wide library system and I believe may pull across the state). Occasionally though, a kindle book is not available from the library. I know sometimes amazon has promotions but I was super happy to be able to use the lending library for prime members. LOVE my paper white, and LOVE not having to wait for the library to be open to borrow from the library and or amazon. As an aside, there is another site, gutenberg.org which has all free ebooks, most of which are older and no longer subject to copyright$$. I have found some wonderful classics there (such as Three Men in a Boat)

Gee, thanks, Siobhan (blush, blush). It is due to my being the first Kindle owner on RP, as far as I know. It does my heart good to see so many using Kindles now.

If you click on the link below it will take you to Kindle's free collections. It explains how to get free books from various sources, including Gutenberg. And, as previously mentioned, the top downloaded free books are listed on the Kindle books home page,

I have to admit I've not actually tried these procedures. Sometimes when I search for a particular book there is a free version, which I then download. Most of the free books available are classics that no longer are under a copyright.

I have had my kindle for more than two years but have only d/l'd books from Amazon as once read and archived they still store/manage them for you since you bought them.
I have been told that the same is not true of books d/l'd from other sites unless you want to open a file and transfer/store them on your computer?
Since the majority of the classics are free on Amazon what sort of books can you get from other sites that Amazon dosn't have? Just asking LOL!

Pat, the web site says that Amazon has thousands of the most popular classics available as e-books for free but that there are overall two million such books available and the other sites have access to more of those.

I enjoy getting library books on my Kindle and Kindle Fire. Your local library probably provides this service and can instruct you on how to do it. Normally it is completely separate from regular book lending although it is the same in spirit - for instance three Kindle copies are stocked, but they may all be in use and you have to wait. You receive an email when one is ready, and go to the website to check it out and download it. For practice you might want to search out one that is available, check it out and get it onto your Kindle, etc.

I find this particularly useful for really large books. Unfortunately when I read Stephen King's latest brick, I got the actual copy before the ebook was available. It is so much easier to read a Kindle in bed than a 900-page book!

So far I've downloaded two books from the library, 40 free books from amazon and 5 that I had to pay for. I think that should be enough to keep me going for a while!

Count me as another happy Kindle user. Mostly I've downloaded library books. Ebooks have become so popular that most popular titles have a waiting list, as Siobhan points out. Unfortunately, several publishers who were providing ebooks through Overdrive no longer are so my guess is those waits, for now, will only get longer. Darn those publishers...
