Ok, you all have me almost convinced to buy myself the Kindle. I just downloaded the app to my iphone. That's all I've done on it so far! The battery is low so I'll have to play with downloading books on it later. Lindsey, I love the idea of putting knitting patterns on it! I scanned some of my pattern pics with the materials list into the computer and printed them in photos, then put them in "brag books" to take with me to yarn shops so I would have the info to buy yarn, or not duplicate patterns, but I've always carried my knitting bag with a bunch of my favorite patterns in it, and my needles when we traveled. Luckily, we don't fly! When we took the train, I vacuumpacked each skein of yarn seperately for a sweater I was working on, and put them in the suit case. I could take out one at a time, and it would puff back up to it's original shape to work with. I knitted 2/3 of a sweater in 10 days that trip! But that bag is HEAVY! With the kindle, I could just carry that, my needles & accessory kit. Hmmm, guess I'll have to check the ccard balances. Trip to KS for a funeral=4 day weekend, gas, food, room. Trip to S. Ohio for bluegrass festival = room, gas, food, tickets, cd, banjo, music stand, & 3 instrument stands. Have to think about it. Tami

I'm tired of looking at Virginia Woolf -- but I don't mind John Steinbeck. He looks more approachable. :) Since we moved three weeks ago -- and my books are all in storage - I'm really grateful for my Kindle. I agree about it being difficult to go back and re-read, unless you have highlighted the section. I think there may be a way to look at page numbers instead of the weird "location" numbers. I saw something about it on Amazon but haven't had time to explore it. It's also hard to read Terry Pratchett books on the Kindle because when you look at/for the footnotes, you lose your place.

I've had a Kindle for several years and the only thing I don't like about it is I can't leaf through the pages to find a reference. I don't have any sentimental attachment to "real" books and appreciate not having to decide if I like a book enough to keep it on a shelf. I do wish I could share Kindle books with people who don't own one, but I am unwilling to lend them my Kindle. I know some people swap the actual Kindle among friends and family who also own Kindles, but I don't have anyone close who also owns a one. It is so much more portable than a book and I always seem to haul around a lot of stuff so the small size is great. If I could afford it I would love to have a tablet to read on and to nuts around on while watching TV. However, I need one that I can download and read Amazon Kindle offerings on. I like dealing with Amazon. I am a terrible pragmatist and can't understand why a lot of people feel strongly that a real book is more pleasant than a Kindle. However, I do wish Kindle book pages were numbered so I could easily skip around and find a desired passage. If anything were to happen to my Kindle I would immediately buy another because I don't want to give up the convenience of an e-reader. If Kindle came out in a tablet with a display as astounding as the I-Pad Retina I would buy it immediately. So far, they haven't matched the fabulous clarity of the Retina. Nancy

I've been a Kindle owner since the first month it was released and I absolutely love it. My reason for buying it was that my book collection was, and still is, out of control. I never expected to like reading on the Kindle as much as I do. However, I find I read faster and with less distraction than when reading a "real" book. Some of the advantages: From Amazon you can download the first chapter of books for free. These samples help me decide whether I would like the book before purchasing it. As long as you live in an area with good Sprint coverage, you can purchase and download any Kindle book at any time in one minute or less from anywhere -- no need to have a computer involved. It can be propped up while you are eating or doing something else that can be multi-tasked with reading. It can be read easily in full sunlight, just like a book. It is not hard on the eyes like reading from a computer can be. There are several choices of font for those who like larger or smaller print. When you have finished reading the book you can delete it from the Kindle but download it again from your Amazon library whenever you want to see it again. It is possible to download free books from various sources as well as purchasing book from Amazon. I have not done that but know others do. I'm sure there are other advantages that I'm forgetting right now. I do still purchase books for various reasons -- reference books, garden books, knitting books, and books that aren't available on the Kindle. Sometimes I purchase books just because I want to. My love for books goes back to babyhood, I think, and I'm as surprised as anyone that I can love the Kindle, too. If you have any specific questions I will try to answer them.
