I know (from personal experience,trust me) that the best way to unstick your tongue from a metal object is to press it real hard. The blood will rush to your tongue, heating it, and it will melt the ice that's sticking you to the pole.

Funny in a movie ( cause it was set up), not so funny in real life. Hope he is fine and will able to look back and laugh, a story to tell his own children.

Preferably a cool or warm but not icy or hot one and not too spicy.Poor kid.

It is kinda cute that he did that, but I know it probably hurt like the dickens. Especially if he panicked to get loose. Poor guy, let us know how he faired.

I love that movie. I've never stuck my tongue on a flag pole, but have on the old metal ice trays. More than once. :o)

Dr Oz talked about that recently. He said the best thing to do is use warm water (not hot) to unstick the tongue. He also explained why the tongue sticks to the pole, but I don't remember what he said.

Christmas Story: Boise boy licks pole, gets stuck

BOISE, Idaho  It's become an annual winter tale: A young boy gets his tongue stuck to a metal pole, perhaps as the result of a dare. This year, the scene straight out of the movie "A Christmas Story" unfolded Tuesday morning in Boise with a boy of about 10. Boise firefighters used a glass of warm water to free the unidentified boy from the metal fence pole.

Fire Capt. Bill Tinsley says the boy's tongue was bleeding a little, but he was OK and allowed to continue walking to school. Firefighters estimate the boy was 10 years old.

Rescue workers responded after a woman driving by saw the boy and called 911.

Last year, the unlucky boy was a 10-year-old from Hammond, Ind., especially apt, since the 1983 movie is set in a fictional city based on Hammond.

There is water on the surface of the tongue, and the ice on the pole, if there is some, or the pole, itself, lacking ice, are several degrees below freezing - enougfh so that when the liquid on the tongue touches the ice or the pole, it freezes. And if you've tried to pull up a piece of cloth that's frozen to the driveway, you'll know the tongue's reluctance to move away.

Pulling the tongue free immediately, before the liquid on its surface can melt again, will almost certainly pull at least part of the skin on the surface of the tongue where it's touching the pole away with the ice on its surface, leading to a painful surface until that area of skin can be replaced. If the ice on the pole, or the pole itself, is rather thin, leaving the tongue there will soon melt the liquid on its surface, allowing it to be withdrawn without difficulty ... which will take longer, if there's a fairly thick layer of ice on the pole, or the metal of the pole is thicker, especially if the temperature is quite a few degrees below freezing.

If one can pour water that's just hot enough not to cause discomfort to the tongue down the pole past the tongue, it warms the pole, with the warmth moving to the part of the pole that's freezing the water on the surface of the tongue, to the point where the ice on the surface of the tongue thaws.

The deeper the cold, or the thicker the metal of the pole, the more residual discomfort that the tongue will suffer, even though the owner of the tongue did not pull it free before the ice on its surface melted, for the exposure to the cold pole will cause some freezing damage to the cells just under the skin of the tongue.

That is funny. Not for him of course. What state does your daughter live in? I'm asking because our local radio station mentioned a boy getting his tongue stuck on a pole on his way to school.

Metal poles and below zero temps and tongues aren't good combinations! LOL

poor kid...but ohhh the story he'll have to tell his kids and grandkids...and of course you'll never forget it either!!
