Prevention magazine has recommended Sambucol black elderberry syrup to shorten the duration of the flu, but it didn't do a thing for me (that I'm aware of) last year.

Some flu around here but mostly the 24 hour type, but others have this type. Too cold for anything else LOL. Did you check with your Dr. Just sending good thoughts, chicken noodle soup, and hot tea.

I had it too, went to see my family in Louisiana the week end before Christmas and some of the kids had been sick, well I picked up the flu bug, It took a full 7 days for me to start to feel human again. Mine was severe chills and fever and massive sweats, then the cough started but the cough part has not been too bad thankfully.
The dr called in tamiflu for me but after I read up on it online and page after page of horrible side effects I decided to just ride it out instead.

drink lots of fluids, I get the juice that has banana juice in it to help keep up the potassium, and drink gatoraid to keep the electrolytes up, take your vitamins to keep from getting depleted by the fever. And REST!

lydia, I am so sorry you are not feeling well. I really have no idea how long the flu lasts, I haven't had it in years.....I hope I'm not jinxing myself. Hope you are back to being your special self real soon. Take care of yourself.

Next year, get your flu shot! DH and I got ourr shots.He had to go to the Emergency Room a couple weekends ago because he had some kind of seizure. While there, two women also in the ER, both suffering from the flu. They were on either sides of DH's bed. Sorry to hear them so sick, the doctors were ordering CAt scans and preparing to admit both women. A simple vaccination could have prevented lots of misery!

not everyone is able to take the flu shot. After having a severe reaction to one I was told not to take them again.

Oh, no- feel better soon, Lyd! Gosh, I just hate when people go out and spread their germs around, that little guy should have been home in bed and you all could have had another Christmas party another day for him.

This is such an easy time of year for germs to get spread so easily, I think one reason I don't get sick much is because I stay home a lot. Family can really mess you up!

Alisande, I'll have to try oscillococcinum next time, I did take some Bioplasma (homeopathic remedy for colds/flu) the first day but it didn't do anything for my symptoms. I usually will do the 'cold socks treatment' if I catch an illness early... unfortunately this just hit me hard all of a sudden.

I've only had the flu one other time in the past 20 or so years and it was a real doozie (pukey flu), I rarely get sick plus I tend to react badly to certain medications/etc. so I don't get a flu shot.

I've had it for over two weeks now, had my flu shot the first of Nov. Can't get rid of the cough and fever.

I got something a few days before Christmas! Luckily it was only a 24 hour bug and a day or two to recover, and luckily no one else got it here. Spent a lot of time in the bathroom if you catch my drift (both ends!)

I think a lot of times we wear ourselves out and don't realize it. Then we are more apt to catch the things going around!

Sorry you aren't feeling well Lydia. My niece has been sick too but I think hers is just a cold. I haven't had a cold since 2003 so I am hoping Miss Meagen is going to take her germs home with her when she heads back to Toronto tomorrow.

I remember a bad flu that was going around at Christmas in the early 1970s. I had company for Christmas and felt lousy with a bad case of the flu coming on. Strangely, I never got a fever with it. We named her Jennifer!

I very seldom have a cold, but two days before Christmas, I started sneezing and had such a runny nose. DD sprayed some of her Zicam in my mouth, and then I bought some to use the next day. That was the end of my cold, thank goodness.

No one was sick Christmas Eve when we were all together, but my aunt was sick all night, both ways, lives alone and almost called the squad. It finally quit after about 5 hours. She did go to the ER on Christmas day and was given an IV and told that she couldn't go to work this week. And that it is re-occuring. If she started with it again to ge to the ER IMMEDIATELY because this virus is causing heart problems.

DN started puking on Sunday, lasted a day. His mom still has a cold or something that started about the same time. My dad went to the dr. this morning with a cold/something. He goes to pnuemonia very fast, along with other health problems. He was given anti-biotics to prevent the pneumonia (they didn't last year when it happened this fast and ended up in the hospital) and something for cough. He is to call the dr tomorrow with an update to see if that is all they will do. I went to the dr Monday with an inner ear infection. Hope no one else gets sick, in our family or here with my KT family.

So sorry your sick with the flu Lydia. Those little ones can catch it so easy from day care or babysitters and pass it on. ugh! No fun, no fun at all and especially around this time of year. Everytime I would go out Christmas shopping I'd hold my breath if I passed a shopper coughing or sneezing. Like to have turned blue and passed out a couple of times. :) But, it's all I knew to do. I did get a flu shot so hopefully that helped.

On Thursday I started getting a sore throat. By Friday night I was really starting to feel horrible. I had a cough fever and runny nose. Christmas was even worse. All I did was rest and took lots of Zicam but it didnt help. We came back on Sunday. I still have it and now my husband got it too. When I have a head cold is what I call it water has such an ugly taste to me and I dont drink enough of it. When I dont drink enough water I get bladder infection so now I also have that. I am taking Nyquil, Mucinez, amoxicillin because I also have sinus infection and using vicks and halls cough drops and taking Ibuprofen to help the swelling in my sinuses. I take hot baths with Johnsons vapor bath for steaming. You can only find that in the baby section at Walmart in a blue bottle. For my bladder infection I am also brewing cornsilk tea and drinking that. I figure I am just going to ride it out. Yes my husband did have a flu shot but it does not work for all kinds of the flu.

I'm sorry you are so sick, Lydia. And sorry to say that the flu lasts for abt a week and then you're still weak from it.
I haven't had it in a long time but do get the shot. Although, even that is no guarantee you won't get one of the hundreds of strains out there.
