Oh, I am using the classic view now but it won't be a choice before long. I did look at the New and Improved site. Twice. Hated everything about it. Ancestry doesn't care what the user thinks. When they did other stupid things and we gave our 2¢ they just plowed ahead and did what they wanted, not what we wanted. The comments idea is just to pacify us. Which it doesn't because we all know their mind is already made up. Money. It's all about the money. I'd like to know how much they spent making us so unhappy this time. It's making it very easy to break the ancestry.com habit, though. Considering what I had tentatively budgeted for next year, I can do something else really nice for myself and it won't involve ancestry.com. I'm getting everything off of there now. I'm so sorry I started the ancestry DNA but I will abandon it there and concentrate on Gedmatch. I found that the DNA matches at ancestry are the same people I have already made contact with and if I want to look harder, just search for family trees. My advice is save your money on the DNA kits. You will find the same people using the family tree search there. Use the connect feature or the contact button. What is really worrisome is them collecting health information. Now, that is scary! They won't implement any way for us to work with our DNA data but they'll gladly write down every health problem we have. They aren't going to do anything that will help us; they're going to sell the information to 3rd parties.

Kathy, the program has been available at one of our libraries for some time, and when it was first announced they said all the features wouldn't be available. But an article appeared in the newspaper this week, saying all the libraries in the county will now offer Ancestry. It talked about various aspects of the program, but since I've never used it I don't know what, if anything, might be missing. I'll ask them. It did say you could see birth, death, and marriage certificates and census reports, and access other people's trees. Good point, Snidely. In fact, on NBC News last they had a couple of hackers talking about how hacking is done. I wasn't watching, and listened with only half an ear, but I think they gave the advice not to use public computers at all. I could be wrong about that though.

My mother's parent's both immigrated from Italy - small villages in the Italian Alps not far from the Swiss border. My mother's parents also immigrated from northern Italy, Piemonte to be be more exact -- one from a small village north of Torino, and one from a small city (they met in Los Angeles). I made contact with her father's family, or rather a cousin in Torino searched and found us in California. I visited, and went with my cousin to see where the family originated. We went to the municipio, and for a few centesimi, obtained a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate. They still had huge ledgers with handwritten entries for births going back centuries -- the small number of people living there probably made storage of the ledgers possible. My father's father returned to his town in Toscana in his last years; I visited his grave so I have his date of death. I wrote the province and asked for information on his birth and death certificates, and surprisingly received an answer. I qualify to apply for Italian citizenship based on my father's father, or at least I did the last I checked, but other circumstances tossed a roadblock and long detour in my path. With the current rise of the Italian far right, I'm not sure I want to take the chance of reliving the days of fascists brawling in the streets.
