Acupuncture - has anyone tried it for pain relief?

I'd be grateful to hear of your experience. Did it cure the problem? Did it help? Was it expensive? Did the acupuncturist insist on a change of diet and/or require you to take herbs?

Not accupuncture, but I did try an aspect of holistic medicine, meditation. It really helps. You sit in a chair, relax and visualize yourself floating,it actually decreases your heart rate and blood pressure. I was taught this by a psychologist. It's called Biofeedback. It really works. I have almost no pain. I have lupus and arthritis.

At my last job, tons of my co-workers all went to the same accupuncturist for various reasons. I was always hearing how amazing it was, for pain and all sorts of other things. It was covered by our insurance, so there was only a co-pay. Most insurance companies now will cover more holistic/natural approaches to healing, so I would call and find out if I were you.

I have. I had severe pain in my shoulder for several months and had an mri and was told I needed surgery. I was not convinced I did so I found an acupuncturist who was also a medical dr. and he did six treatments. That was 15 years ago and still no pain.

As an herb, there are medicinal attributes. Here's what it says in Louise Tenney's book, "Today's Herbal Health". Catnip has been called nature's "Alka-Seltzer." The Indians used it for infant colic, but it also has a sedative effect on the nervous system. It is useful for many ailments" for all cases of fevers for its action in inducing sleep and in producing perspiration without increasing heat in the body. In children it is said to speedily overcome convulsions. It is also good for restlessness and colic and as a pain killer, especially for small children and infants. It has been known to help prevent a cold when drinking a warm infusion when you notice the first symptom. It helps in fatigue and improves circulation. It is said to help to prevent miscarriages and premature births. It helps in aches and pain due to flu and upset stomach and diarrhea associated with flu. Catnip is high in vitamins A and C, and the B-complex vitamins. It contains magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sodium, and a trace of sulphur. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -I would caution using it on a regular basis since many herbals can cause liver toxins and even liver damage. I have an acquaintance who did herbal studies as a medical scientist this with a number of herbs and herbal blends on liver damage. -Dry it in the oven with the light on, between two layers of paper towels, rather than in the microwave if you don't have a dehydrator. Dry at a low temperature - 90-100°F. High-temp. drying will destroy many of the vitamins. -It is also suggested catnip be administered in the morning and evening. -If you take any Rx drugs or OTC medicines, check with a pharmacists for any possible drug interactions. -The tea is made from the dried leaves and flowering heads and is generally recognized as safe to use, plus it has a pleasant taste. There is one caution using it from a contemporary herbalist, Michael Moore. In general, "[catnip] may act to increase menstrual flow to varying degrees," so pregnant women should NOT use it. It can also cause spotting. -Harvesting: Gather the leaves and tops in late summer when the plant is in full bloom, and dry them carefully. Remove the tough stalks. Store in a dry place, away from light and heat. -If smoked, physicians have reported that catnip "was indeed mildly pshchoactive". -Culinary uses: as a salad ingredient -Catnip Tea: A standard beverage in England, where it is grown commercially, before the introduction of tea from China. To make catnip tea: Pour boiling water over the dried leaves/flowers and let it steep. Euell Gibbons [of the Grapenuts commercials fame decades ago] advised using a little more catnip per cup than you would ordinary tea. He also cautioned that catnip's flavor and aroma are very volatile, so he sat a saucer over his cup to "protect" his tea while it steeped. Euell Gibbons made candied catnip leaves to serve at the end of a meal, as a digestive aid or an after-dinner mint. His recipe calls for dipping catnip leaves into a mixture of beaten egg white and lemon juice. Then he sprinkled each side with sugar and let them dry for a day or so. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. I just saw this, Itsoi. I left the mustard on there for 24 hours and then cleaned it off. It faded completely after a short time (maybe a couple of days, I can't remember). I never heard about conditioning it, that could be a good idea but we've been pretty harsh on ours for the past 3 months and it's holding up really well, so might do that after a year or if a specific room needs it before. I felt that the oil finish would be easier for me to do touch ups on if I needed to. Still have construction going on but we've been living here for the past 3 months. And we routinely throw balls and toys for our dog down the long runway of the living room/hall and I've yet to see her nails scratch up anything! It's been pretty impervious to our kids dripping water in the kitchen also. I don't know how it will look in 5/10 years but at the moment, I'm still really happy with our choice. It seems like a very low maintenance, easy to clean (doesn't show much dirt/dust!) floor. We paired the Rockwood Claystone with BM OC17 on our walls and like the color combo. If you're leaning towards buying it, just buy 1 box and pop it together somewhere you can look at it for a week or so. I think you'll get a pretty good idea then if you like it or not. And if you like it, you can reuse it, win win! Good luck!

Notice that the FAQ on the site does not include information on the volume of water needed to fill the tub! Well, I did the math. Their smallest recommended size is about 65" long, 34" wide and filled about 16" deep for a bath. Note that this is not an impressive shower size. (The one in the ad is probably 60 inches wide.) That is 153 gallons of water. This 2 person air massage tub at 23" deep uses only 2 gallons more. There is a lot of cubic area lost to corners in a square tub. The one below uses 2 gallons less than the smallest recommended size and depth of your "Roman Shower" and it has a depth of 19.5" inches. Note that the woman in the Roman Shower video seems to have only 8" - 10" of water when she leaves the tub. Disabled, elderly, or otherwise less mobile people would have a heck of a time getting out of the "tub" with the Roman Shower, too. There is no heater for it, either. By the time it was deep enough for a bath, the water would have cooled a lot, warming up all the tile and substrate in the Roman Shower with its excess surface area with square corners. It may be a step above the home made sunken roman baths of the 1960s and 1970s, but it is nothing like a comfortable modern bathtub.

Years ago I had some severe neck pain and didn't want to be on narcotics....so I had accupuncture. It was done by a doc who practiced in a large group practice where I worked so it was free. I went in thinking it would not work but, amazingly, it did with just one treatment.
I didn't have any problems for years.
(And now that I am trying Glenda's gin and golden raisin cure, neck pain is no longer a problem.)

Yes, some years ago I tried it and it really helped with back and neck pain. I don't remember what the charge was. No, she didn't insist I change my diet or require me to take herbs.

Years ago, my Mother, bless her soul, had a very painful hip problem and walked with a cane...After a few acupuncture treatments she walked pain and cane free...She also had HB and he regulated that too....At the time, her's was paid by insurance...If needed, I'd be there in a minute....

I've been getting acupunture for about 10 years. A person can go to a acupunture school and be trained in acupunture and herbs only. I go to a Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor. He is a doctor in China as well as a Internal Medicine M.D. in the states. He is trained in herbs, diet and nutrition. When I see him we discuss my whole body both mental and physical.
The acupunture did not help my chronic back pain. It somewhat helps TMJ, headaches, and neck pain. Everyone has a different result from acupunture. You usually need several treatments ans it should be covered by insurance. Try and get a recommendation from a friend for a good doctor.

i have not had accupuncture, i'm actually looking to start soon for endometriosis but i do take my dogs :-) one, tracey, has gone for 6 yrs for severe hip displasia (deformed hip joints) and is like a puppy after each treatment. the other, sandy, has only been a few times for arthritus in her wrists, she's a psycho terrrier and she gets great results thou they don't last as long as my other dog. i took tracey when it was decided she'd only improve w/ hip replacement and i have been reluctant to go to surgery. she will not be needing surgery, we can manage her pain w/ accupuncture and supplements! ~ liz

They're doing acupuncture on my husband for a back injury. They put the needles in his feet. I just asked him if it's helping him at all. It's being done 3x a week at physio. He says it makes his feet hurt so it takes his mind off his sore back, so he guesses it's working. LOL But in all honesty, he's walking like an old man limping in pain. He's had the acupuncture now about 5 or 6 times (3x a week) and his doctor is scheduling an MRI for him.

I just heard they are doing acupuncture on Oprah today. In looking it up on a search, it appears it might be a rerun from Feb 2007. You may want to check it out.

Acupuncture cured Ma's frozen shoulder and my aunt's sciatica. Papa's an MD in Acupuncture, and I preferred the needles to painkillers when my headaches got too bad LOL No change in diet, no herbs.

Dad says it takes multiple sittings to be able to notice a difference, but some of his clients reported improvement after the first sitting itself. He stressed the importance of continuing the treatment even if you feel good after the first sitting or a few sittings. Ma's shoulder felt better after the first 3 sittings so she stopped ... and a couple of weeks later took fifteen more sittings.

At an acupuncture clinic, I saw low-frequency current being applied to the needles for gentle stimulation (but nobody was screaming in pain LOL). But that I'd never be able to take, LOL.

I've heard of acupuncture being used during childbirth for pain-free delivery - no idea if it works.

Dr. Oz is on Oprah right now recommending acupuncture for pain relief. Of course he says to have a full medical check up first.

DH used to go to go for accupressure treatments. No needles just manipulation of the pressure points. It's been 25 years since he last had a treatment. He was taught to manipulate the points just above his ankles if he does have pain. No diet change and no herbs.
