Has anyone tried 'Pet Flora' probiotic?

My 8yr old cat who I adopted from the ASPCA last July has been on Flagyl for funky BMs for almost 6 weeks. Everything is fine til I take her off the med, then her stool starts to get soft and stinky again. The vet wanted me to keep her on the flagyl a while longer before doing further invasive diagnostics to see if it is IBD, or another kind of bacteria or viral infection. I have been giving her liquid acidophilus as well. She tested negative for worms and Giardia, btw.

I just ordered what is supposed to be a super probiotic called Pet Flora (its rather expensive, but not as expensive a sonogram or painful as bloodtests and sterile stool sample extractions)so I figured I'd give it a try. I called their customer service and they were very willing to spend time answering my questions.

I was wondering if anyone on this board has had experience with this particular product? Thanks

I've started giving her the Pet Flora while I'm gradually weaning her off a six week course of Flagyl. So far, so good, but its really too soon to tell. I'll have to see what happens when a few days go by without the antibiotic. Will let you know.

I used to use Fit veggie wash, then would run out quickly. Now I use homemade veggie wash for mild cases of mites, it will work if used a few times in succession, about once a week for a month. here are a few recipes I've found since I can't seem to find the one I use which is basiclly lemon juice, baking soda, a drop of dish soap, and water. I spray on then about ten minutes later rub the leaves under running water, either sink or tub. I would be leary of using vinegar though since it is used as a natural weed killer. #1 1 tablespoon lemon juice 10 drops grapefruit seed extract 2 tablespoons low-sodium baking soda 1 cup purified water 3/4 cup vinegar Mix well in a sprayer bottle. Shake before use. Spray produce (except mushrooms) and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Rinse well. #2 Combine 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice to 2 Tablespoons of baking soda with 1 cup of water. I put this mixture in a sprayer bottle and keep it under the sink. Spray fruits and veggies and allow them to sit for a few minutes then wipe with a towel. This also makes for a safe cleaner to let your children use as they "play" scrub the kitchen with you! #3 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 tablespoons baking soda 1 cup water Put this mixture in a sprayer bottle. After spraying, let produce sit for a few minutes. Rinse well. #4 add a few tablespoons of vinegar to a bottle of clean, cold tap water. Shake well and spray on veggies and then wash under flowing clean water as usual. Another thing you can use is a spray of fish emulsion which will suffocate the little nasties, but will also have to be repeated. I prefer the citrus type because it doesn't smell as much.

I read the A&M link. It wouldn't be the first time A&M was wrong about something. Plus they're about as Agri-business as you can get. Their testing of organic methods is often suspect. Their conclusion about the ineffectiveness of Milky Spore could be simply because they didn't account for it's 2-3 year establishment time. I have no proof about the effectiveness of Milky Spore. I applied it at the proper time according to instructions about 25 years ago. I haven't had noticeable grub damage in my lawn since then. Maybe it's luck, or it's attributable to other factors or methods. A few of those years I treated the lawn for fleas, but most years not. I live in South Texas with alkaline clay soil. The only thing milky spore or lawn insecticide treatments can be expected to do is to kill the larvae in the soil. The adults are not feeding when you see them bouncing off your exterior lights or your forehead. They lay their eggs and then die. The prime time to treat them is as soon as you stop seeing them around your outdoor lights. They've laid their eggs and died. The larvae are near the surface, small, and tender. When I dig in my yard, I often see a few grubs. The thing to remember is that, regardless of what control method you use, you can never kill them all. The only time you won't see grubs is when they turn into adults and come out of the ground to fly around bouncing off of things till they lay eggs and die. rangier

"The mother tree, from which the acorns came, has experienced temps around 0 degrees F in Denmark" Yeah but an average winter in most of Denmark is zn 8, so in theory it will be a little easier to establish there. I had one die in the winters of the 1990s, but not one of the colder winters like 1994. Maybe 1996? In any case it clearly wasn't particularly hardy...for example...a small Pinea pinea survived the same winter. I think it died at 0F. Quercus suber was hardier too. Heat & humidity is generally not nearly as much a problem for the large flora of the Mediterranean as it is for those of California. There is/was Quercus ilex, suber, and Pinea pinea at the NCSU arb...and at Williamsburg...and various other Med. species I could mention, while Californian trees other than S. semprevirens and a couple others are very rare there. Certainly no California BLEs come to mind as doing well in the SE but I could be forgetting a couple. Compare Arbutus x andrachnoides which is sold by Woodlanders in SC and has been an absolute trouper for me int he past 3 summers, with Arbutus menziesii which is utterly ungrowable anywhere on the east coast. So you could certainly try it but expect it to die in a cold winter, not a summer. BTW though it is interesting to grow as a novelty, if you actually are planning a landscape around it you should be aware they are one of the most sombre looking trees I know of, and they cast dense shade. My latest kick is Dr. Becker's book, Real Food. I haven't started the book yet - just got it. With her recipes, you can do either raw or cooked. I tried the raw, with Feline Instincts, and my animals did really, really well on it. At first, the whole process seemed daunting, but after you get into a routine, it's fine. But, I just can't do raw anymore. I work, so I'd have to put the food out in the a.m., and then take it up bc you can't, of course, leave raw chicken sitting around. My cats are all grazers and by the time I got home, they were ravenous. When I was home on a weekend, I'd have to keep taking the food in and out of the fridge all day long for whomever was hungry at the time (I have 5 cats), so it was just tooooo much. I really wanted to like B.I. and tried for a long time to get things set up with them, but their website had too many issues and they, too, are expensive. I look at sites like catinfo.org, and naturalcatcareblog.com for info often, too. I'm hoping Dr. Becker's book can give me some better, current info on meat sources. All I usually feed my cats is chicken. I've read that beef doesn't agree with a lot of cats, so I don't give them that. And I've read that you have to be careful not to give them certain kinds of fish or too much fish, plus they don't care for fish most of the time. No pork. I've seen on the Inet that you can buy rabbit and other odd sources, even live mice (can't do that) but, again, sooo expensive. In the meantime, I use Evo, esp for my kidney cat, and Weruva. Thankfully, I've got a really great vet that is affordable, so I can spend the $ on food that I need to, but even so....sheesh! I just cannot believe people still feed their cats dry food, tho. It's like having kids and letting them eat cheetos all the time.

sorry, hit submit before I was done...

I wanted to say that I hope the probiotic helps, BUT, that if need be please do your best to ensure that your cat gets the tests needed to discover the cause of the problem. Blood tests shouldn't be too uncomfortable and hopefully a sonogram will not be necesary (I do understand that costs can be prohibitive.) The fecal extraction would likely be very uncomfortable... but we have to have done what is needed to determine the root of the problem, yes?

OK...After 10 days of treatment, I'm ready to give Pet Flora a cautious, qualified thumbs for solving Odessa's loose&stinky stool problem. She has been totally off the Flagyl for 3 days, after a week of gradually reducing the dosage...and is still making perfectly formed,dark poops.

Granted, this is not based on a scientifically controlled finding...but since July when I adopted her and the vet put her on Flagyl, every 7-10 days when I would try reducing the dosage, the problem started to re-occur within 36 hours. During that period I had her on a liquid pro-biotic that didn't seem to be making a difference. I definately think that the Flagyl got rid of some kind of bad stuff she had growing in there (in addition to being loose and smelly, the color was yellow even tho she tested neg for Giardia)...and perhaps the extended length of the course of the antibiotic was ultimately responsible for getting rid of the condition. But there was (while she was still on the full dose of Flagyl)a noticable improvement in her stool the day after her first Pet Flora capsule.

Her diet has remained the same...I have had her on a diet of Wellness canned chicken (very little if any dry) for well over a month.

Anyway...so far, so good, but I'm still going to reserve judgement until she's been completely off the antibiotic for another week.

I have had tremendous success with Pet Flora and I've used it on my dogs and cats for about 4 years now. I think it is an amazing product for maintaining healthy digestion, and for the prevention and treatment for gas, diarrhea and vomiting in animals. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs (a German Shorthair Pointer and a Yellow Labrador.)

Whenever my dogs find something they shouldn't have eaten; whether they get into my trash can, eat another dog's food, or steal people food, they will get bad gas, diarrhea or they'll vomit. I'll treat them at home with Pet Flora and always have great results! If we go on a hike and my dogs drink some stagnant water, I will immediately give them Pet Flora when we get home, just to make sure they don't get sick.

I will give my cats Pet Flora if I notice loose stool in their litter boxes, and the diarrhea will be gone by the next day. Since I typically can't tell which cat has the upset stomach, I open a capsule or two and sprinkle it over their dry food. The first time I gave it to them, I was shocked at how quickly I had results. I've also given it neighbor's pets and coworkers pets when they have diarrhea and its worked every time. I am a true believer that Pet Flora works and I think this is a product that every pet owner should have on hand.
