Cancer and my sister

You all have shared in and taken the path with me during my sister and I dealing with, and living with breast cancer. Her local paper in Kelso Washington did a call out for stories from readers living with cancer. She wrote her story and submitted it.

She just called to tell me that they contacted her and are going to print her story in the paper! How cool is this?

She is in the top 4 stories submitted, and will offer her a prize to be announced on Monday.

My sister, how she says things sometimes....said....

I just never had anything good to write about before I had cancer.

I am so excited and proud for her.

When it appears on Sunday, I will post her story.

All she wanted to do was to give just one person a reason go through all the treatments and come out better than they started.

Cancer has changed her, and our families life in more ways than I can even mention. Good more than bad.

I am one proud sissy.

Congratulations Mary! WTG!

Cancer doesn't have to be all bad. In some ways, my life has changed for the better since having cancer. I hardly ever sweat the small stuff now and it makes a big difference.

Oh Trin...I can't find words to tell you how happy I am for your Sister!!! She continues to be in my Prayers! You're right, cancer DOES change the person and their families in so many ways (least it did ours).

If there's a way, I'd love to read your Sister's story!

I wrote this message yesterday and I forgot to press send it!! I think is understandable with all this things going on around me and the shooting at Ft. Hood. As I write this I turned on the TV on CNN and they are talking about a shooting at an office in Orlando !! 8 people shot and the shooter is on the loose. When all this madness will stop? Thanks everyone for encouragement. I really need it. I am so stressed out about my sister situation, my surgery and when I came home tonight I heard about Ft Hood shooting, Lucy's scare and all those poor soldiers who's life was cut short. I do not want any more stress and worries for a while !!! Lucy, my sister is 6 years younger than me and she is the youngest of the 4 of us (3 sisters and one brother). I am so sorry for your losses. I had a similar situation, but mine was my mother and brother. My mom had a heart attack and while she was in the hospital she also suffered a stroke. We had all of our attention on helping her get better and my 47 year old brother had a heart attack and died. On the day we were having his viewing they decided to send my mom home from the hospital. We were all in shock over her sickness, his death, and then we had to get her home and settled. My brother wasnÂt married, and he lived with my mom. I have 6 other brothers and 5 sisters all scrambling around to get things settled and get to the viewing, so some of us were there at different times, and not all of us at the same time, which probably seemed strange to friends and family that werenÂt aware of the situation. Anyway what IÂm trying to get at is we didnÂt feel we gave him proper attention during his death, so when the 6 month mark came, my mom was doing much better, and we were still in numbness and grieving, we decided to have a celebration of his life. We got the activity center at our church, invited friends and family to celebrate with us. We asked that each person write down a memory they had of my brother, and if they had any pictures to attach them to the memories, and we made them into a scrap book. It wasnÂt anything formal, just friends and family and memories. We were able to laugh and cry together and give our undivided attention to his memory. So I think maybe you could do that for your son, and get some closure to your feelings of not giving him your full attention. By the way, I think you gave all you could give considering the circumstances. Again, I am sorry for you losses!

Trinity, That's a fantastic present for your sister. I'm sure that she will treasure it always. I had breast cancer (I'm fine now, but of course, there's always a little worry about reoccurrence). My all time favorite present was a music box from my sister where part of the proceeds went to fight breast cancer. The music box is in the "Promise of Hope" series, and my particular music box is called "Wings of Courage." If anyone ever wants more details about it, please email me through my page. What makes my gift even more precious that my sister picked this out shortly before she died of ALS. She was paralyzed, but used voice recognition software on the computer to order this. It truly is a testament to her kindness, ingenuity, and bravery. For their birthdays, I also created a DVD of family pictures for my sister and her twin. I used Picasa and it was very easy to use. What software are you planning to use? Also, for music, I used the song "Sisters" by Rosemary Clooney. I'd love to hear how your project turns out. I'll keep your sister in my thoughts and prayers. Having a great sister like you will definitely help her. You are absolutely right Anne. After 20yrs too. That's a remarkable run of such an aggressive cancer but still.... it does suck! As Heather says, she recovered quickly although I think it was day 2 post op that she went shopping! Marjorie sounds equally stoic and probably should be Heather's twin instead of me. I'm just not built with the same stuff as she is. I'd be the one asking for the morphine. I saw Heather go through chemo, surgery and then radiation virtually without complaint. She set the bar very high should I follow in her footsteps. I went with Heather for her pre-op anaesthetic visit. The anaethetist said "Don't worry - it's simple surgery! I wanted to scream at him - Simple..... for who! Compared to what your sister has gone through it may well be but when I worked with oncology children, it was often the simple stuff that seemed to them to be the last straw! They'd tolerate bone marrows/spinal taps but lose it when having blood drawn. If you don't have one - a fanny pack will make it a lot easier to have to hold the JP drains. Much easier than coiling the tubing and pinning it to your clothes. I will be thinking of your sister in the coming days. I totally understand your need not to be an active caregiver without a break. Please don't feel selfish. A worn-out caregiver whether it be physically or emotionally is just not an effective one. You are very wise to realize that ahead of time.

I'm a breast cancer survivor. It can't help but change your life. Talk about not sweating the small stuff!! Sometimes I feel complacent about things, but I think that's the way God wants us to be. I'm looking forward to reading her story. Thanks for sharing it w/ us!

I'm battleing it now,just had my 2nd chemo yesterday.I also say it sure puts things in perspective,and as the others say you don't sweat the small stuff.Then again i didn't do that too much,but i always preached it to DH,now he sees what i mean.

I also can't wait to read your sisters story,we all learn from each other.

I wish your sister much success in her battle,it isn't easy,but it's doable.Prayers and good thoughts for her.

Your title scared me, Trin, so I'm really glad this is a happy story! Your sister sounds like an amazing woman and she has a terrific family. Yay for positive outcomes!

Trin, I know how you feel with your sister having breast cancer. My sister does too. She had it 17 years ago, and now she has it in the other breast. Very early stage, called calcification. 1st time she had a lumpectomy,radiation, and chemo. That breast is fine. She has a needle biopsy next Friday.
I'll be looking forward to the article, and I'll share it with my sister.

I had Breast Cancer a few years back and I agree that you learn to live and appreciate life in a totally different way...The Lung Cancer has really brought it all back.

Congratulations to your sister! I'm looking forward to reading her article. Like everyone else has said, cancer does change you. I have met so many new friends and have found out just how wonderful family and friends can be.
