Cancer and my sister

You all have shared in and taken the path with me during my sister and I dealing with, and living with breast cancer. Her local paper in Kelso Washington did a call out for stories from readers living with cancer. She wrote her story and submitted it.

She just called to tell me that they contacted her and are going to print her story in the paper! How cool is this?

She is in the top 4 stories submitted, and will offer her a prize to be announced on Monday.

My sister, how she says things sometimes....said....

I just never had anything good to write about before I had cancer.

I am so excited and proud for her.

When it appears on Sunday, I will post her story.

All she wanted to do was to give just one person a reason go through all the treatments and come out better than they started.

Cancer has changed her, and our families life in more ways than I can even mention. Good more than bad.

I am one proud sissy.

Way to go sister Mary!!!

Congratulations Mary! WTG!

Cancer doesn't have to be all bad. In some ways, my life has changed for the better since having cancer. I hardly ever sweat the small stuff now and it makes a big difference.

Oh Trin...I can't find words to tell you how happy I am for your Sister!!! She continues to be in my Prayers! You're right, cancer DOES change the person and their families in so many ways (least it did ours).

If there's a way, I'd love to read your Sister's story!

My Dad died at age 79 in August of pancreatic cancer. Mayo thought he had a shot at beating it, but it wasn't to be. He did make it a year though-he had surgery to remove his pancreas, spleen, and gall bladder which made him diabetic to boot. It wasn't easy figuring out the shots, counting carbs, plus getting chemo. At least he had time to get all of his affairs in order. Hospice offers free grief counseling for a year for immediate family members. So sorry you lost your sister and your DH.

You all are making me cry now.......you have all been there for us during this whole time. I wanted to share and many of you played large parts in some of the things I have sent her, and your stories that I relayed to her. We are all part of her healing process. There are so many of us that are going through this or have been through it. What a wonderful thing to put your story to paper, you never know when something you say, may make a difference in somebodys life. When Mary Jo was at the Relay for Life in her town, she saw a huge sign someone was holding, it said "Heaven can wait" I have a picture of it in fact, and plan on doing something with that and this article. Just those three words inspired her, and those three words make me tear up every time I see them. If you go to the link there are three other stories that are very heart warming too. She is going to send me the actual copy of the paper, and I think I will have it framed for her for Christmas...along with a T-shirt that says, "No really, I'm Fine" Trin

So many great ideas-- I really appreciate them all and hope they help others too! Sheesh, I totally understand what you are saying-- in fact, the flowers we sent really felt foolish-- even though they were lovely. I think practical gifts are perfect-- and in fact, "comforting". I love the idea of a housekeeper. She has a housekeeper.. but wouldn't know how to gift her cleaning services. It's an individual not a service. I love all the ideas of blankets and handmade wraps but her chemo ended in April. She has all the wraps, scarves, wigs, etc. I wish I could prepare meals for her and her family -- but I really can't. I just don't have the knack for Indian food. I do know she likes muffins, tea and fruit. I could make a basket up for her and her family. The team is really looking for me to take the lead here-- and while they all are friendly with her and care how she's doing, none of us really know her all that well. I brought her onto our team just a week before her first diagnosis. I am sorry to say that most of what we know about her is around her cancer.

I will post her story, it is really good. I think she got the jounalist gene from our dad.

I'm a breast cancer survivor. It can't help but change your life. Talk about not sweating the small stuff!! Sometimes I feel complacent about things, but I think that's the way God wants us to be. I'm looking forward to reading her story. Thanks for sharing it w/ us!

I'm battleing it now,just had my 2nd chemo yesterday.I also say it sure puts things in perspective,and as the others say you don't sweat the small stuff.Then again i didn't do that too much,but i always preached it to DH,now he sees what i mean.

I also can't wait to read your sisters story,we all learn from each other.

I wish your sister much success in her battle,it isn't easy,but it's doable.Prayers and good thoughts for her.

Your title scared me, Trin, so I'm really glad this is a happy story! Your sister sounds like an amazing woman and she has a terrific family. Yay for positive outcomes!

Trin, I know how you feel with your sister having breast cancer. My sister does too. She had it 17 years ago, and now she has it in the other breast. Very early stage, called calcification. 1st time she had a lumpectomy,radiation, and chemo. That breast is fine. She has a needle biopsy next Friday.
I'll be looking forward to the article, and I'll share it with my sister.

I had Breast Cancer a few years back and I agree that you learn to live and appreciate life in a totally different way...The Lung Cancer has really brought it all back.

Congratulations to your sister! I'm looking forward to reading her article. Like everyone else has said, cancer does change you. I have met so many new friends and have found out just how wonderful family and friends can be.
