Very good gift idea.

My son's girlfriend gave me one a few years ago for Christmas along with a bunch of recipes that featured rosemary as one of the ingredients. I was thrilled and put it in the bay window over my kitchen sink. The smell was lovely. Great idea for a gift.

Yes, I was thinking of adding some recipes and tips for using Rosemary.

I saw them at Produce Junction--it is a chain. Do you have them in your area? The trees weren't huge, but were nice. PJ is one of those discount produce places--some produce, some plants, sometimes some seasonal decorations--everything really cheap. I'm a little torn between picking them up (before they run out) and running the risk of them maybe not making it to Christmas (rosemary doesn't really belong in a pot, I've read), or waiting and running the risk that they'll be sold out or picked over. Think I'll try to get them this week, and do my best to keep them going.

Oh, and I saw some cute Christmas burlap bags that might be just the size to cover the pots.

Am at the country house this weekend. Prices here are often lower than in the suburbs--it's the most depressed county in the state. So may check a few places here, just to see if anyone has them at even a better price.

They have some beautiful ones at Home Depot but they're $15.00. I think it's a great idea. Rosemary does well throughout the winter...I have some on my back deck. Be sure to tell them to put it in a bigger pot and plant it ASAP.

$7.50 for a rosemary tree is a great price! Buy them up!! LOL I thought of giving them as gifts one year (they were $25 or $30) but by the time I made up my mind they were all sold out.

I think that's a great gift, especially for someone who cooks.

I do hope they come with instructions, though. Through trial and error, I am now able to keep one going all winter long in a pot on an unheated enclosed porch (zone 5).

It can be the kiss of death to bring them inside and let them dry out.

You'll get a gift, too. Your house will smell wonderful until the gifts are delivered. It's a wonderful gift and very creative!

Excellent idea!! I love fresh rosemary. I always put a piece on my corn on the cob before wrapping and cooking. Fabulous.

I'd love that gift!!!

I've grown rosemary in pots since a few years after the dinosaurs roamed the earth. In our mild climate (with several light freezes and occasional hard freezes, often for several days) rosemary does fine outside. It's not about being potted, but about sunlight and watering. Rosemary is a Mediterranean plant and likes LOTS of sun (hard to do in a house, especially in northern climates with cloudy winters.) Getting only a couple of hours of indirect sunlight through a window won't work. And people tend to overwater house plants. Rosemary likes to dry out thoroughly between waterings. And another thing is that rosemary does well in "poor" sandy soil. Keep that in mind when potting it up.

Drewsmaga--I live in the Philadelphia area. We have very cold winters (and last year had piles and piles of snow). I've got a rosemary plant that started life at my suburban house, in an area where it had a northern exposure and horrible soil. It thrived there for several years--coming back every spring. Then, about 3 years ago, I dug it up and transported it to my 'new' house. There, I planted it by the kitchen door--it faces the south, but the soil there is AMAZINGLY good (it's a very fertile farming area). That rosemary plant is now a very, very healthy bush. I can go out any time of year and pick rosemary. I think it's really pretty hearty. Although, you're right, it does have a reputation for not doing too well in pots indoors. Hoping I can keep it going for the next 4 weeks or so, if the produce place isn't sold out yet.
