I have 3 camera's, all of which are Canon's. My first camera was purchased about six or seven years ago. It is discontinued, but is a 4 megapixel S40 camera. LOVED it, and it still takes great shots. I dropped it several years ago, but because of it's metal body, it simply suffered a dent but still works fine.

Three years ago, I upgraded to a Canon S80. It's 8 megapixels and has all the bells and whistles.

Two years ago, my husband surprised me for Christmas when I opened my gift from him to see a Canon Digital Rebel Xti!

I just bought a Canon G9. It's a 12.something Mega Pixel. It cost more than I had planned to spend, but I gathered all the change we had laying around in bowls, jars, etc. and it was over $300! So I just added a couple hundred more and I felt like I was only spending the $200 for the camera and that worked for me. LOL
I really like then Canon products and this camera is great. I haven't spent much time playing with it.

I also dropped my camera, a Panasonic Lumix, which I really liked. It still works, but doesn't zoom anymore.
It was a 6 megapixel and 6X optical zoom.
I bought a Canon Powershot A590 IS 8 megapixels and 4 optical zoom. It's ok, but I liked my Panasonic better.

I want a larger optical zoom for distance shots. Canon has some great ones out now, with 12x optical zoom. I have read that a 6 megapixel is quite enough,if not more, than the average person needs. So I am looking at the Canon Powershot S5 IS 8MP, with 12x optical zoom. They run about $325.

Phyllis, the price on might drop, the big electronics show is soon, and if Canon comes out with a replacement, the price on existing models drop.

I have a couple of Canon DSLRs (D30 and 10D) but last year I bought a Canon S5 IS and I absolutely love it. It feels like something between a pocket camera and an SLR. It takes an 8.something megapixal photo. It has a built in image stabilizer which helps make photos sharper if you are at all 'shakey'. The photos are great. The only things I don't like about it is that the lens cover doesn't stay on well and it's not very fast (causing some action shots to be missed). The photos are great though, and I'd definitely buy it again. Actually, I have :-) I bought them for my son and daughter in law and my daughter and son in law for Christmas last year. And we're buying one for my youngest step-daughter for Christmas this year.

This is the same cameral that Phyllis_MN talked about. And I find one listed online as low as $269.

I have the Canon S3 (pretty much the same as S5) - it is great. Tough camera too. It also works great as a video camera.

Joan, you may be right on that one. I didn't take time to check them out, was just trying to show that there are different prices out there.

Iowagirl has a good option as well. If the S5 is too pricy, Canon still has the S3 and (I think) the S2 available. These are earlier versions of the same camera. It was photos from an S2 that actually got me looking at these cameras. One of the guys in the bird forum posts the most gorgeous photos, all taken with an S2 IS. My birthday camera this year was a Canon Powershot SD1100 IS, little purse cam with image stabilization and it takes great pics!

Mush, I'm looking to buy another Canon S5 IS for my stepdaughter for Christmas. Just now did the search and B&H Photo has it for $289. I've bought from B&H many times. They are a reputable dealer. So if you were considering this one now might be a good time.

Mine's an Olympus. It's at the other house, so I can't give you the exact model, but it's a tiny little thing, 8 pix. and takes the most amazing pictures. Olympus has such a great name for optical equipment, I won't buy anything else. Had an Ol. 35 ml SLR for years--with all the lenses, etc, and it never let me down, so when it came time to go digital, I couldn't see buying anything else. Worth a couple of extra $$$ for a good product like that.
