Oops! Dropped my camera. What do you have?

I dropped my digital camera while at a Halloween party. After looking at prices on new ones I figure it's not even worth attempting to fix it.

What I broke was a Fujifilm, 3 mega pixel. It took great pictures but with prices much lower now than when I bought I am sure I can move up quite a bit.

What do you all have? How many mega pixels? I want something easy to use!

I have 3 camera's, all of which are Canon's. My first camera was purchased about six or seven years ago. It is discontinued, but is a 4 megapixel S40 camera. LOVED it, and it still takes great shots. I dropped it several years ago, but because of it's metal body, it simply suffered a dent but still works fine.

Three years ago, I upgraded to a Canon S80. It's 8 megapixels and has all the bells and whistles.

Two years ago, my husband surprised me for Christmas when I opened my gift from him to see a Canon Digital Rebel Xti!

Hi Kudzu9, The next time you want the pictures to stay on the camera, simply copy them to the computer. The picture's were on the camera and I transfered 6 picture's from my camera to the computer. With this camera I can put a lock on them to keep from losing them by mistake. I always lock them in, but for some reason I over looked 2 pictures and forgot to put the lock on them. When I put them in the computer, 2 of them were not locked, had they been locked they would have stayed in the cameras memory card. There is nothing unique about it just because it is camera memory. I understand where you are coming from and you probably are more familiar with the digital camera than I am because when they first came out I didn't go out and purchase one right away, I was still using my old style camera. When I purchased my HP Printer I have never had a reason to use the slots for the memory card until now. For you it isn't unique because there are a lot more of them out there now. I am still learning about my camera and the software that came with it and as I learn I become more familiar with it too, it takes time but, I will eventually master how it works and if I run into a problem like I did this time, I trust that I can come here and get excellent help from you all. It's nice to know that there are other ways to do things in case you have to go that way and I saved your information just in case I would have to go that way. When my 2 youngest grand children were just little tykes I could take well over 150 photos in an afternoon and evening. Many were garbage as I kept the camera on my knee clicking when they presented a suitable shot. I have two young grandchildren ages 8 and 3 years and I take a lot of pictures of them also but, if I don't like what I see I have the option to erase them at that moment and start over. Why save them if they aren't any good right? You must be well coordinated to be able to keep the camera on your knee, if that were me I would be dropping it and getting pictures of the ground instead of the kids. "LOL" Because of that I went out and bought a small tripod for the camera (it also takes videos)and that way I can get better shots or take a video if I want to. It helps. Alison- how scrumptious are those cats?! I must admit that I had two of the three items mentally purchased as soon as I saw the theme of the swap which is why I was so disappointed when I looked like I was going to miss it because...well...I just love these things and I loved the idea of sharing them. The 3rd is giving me a little difficulty if only in the having to narrow it down to 1 more but it gives me an excuse to go shopping & see what sings. Cloud_swift- I thought of the fragrances because my husband is vilely opposed to anything scented. Potpourri, candles, sachets, even lotions. I've never had a problem with fragrances but after 14 years of having none in the house I find that I've become very sensitive to them. I can barely walk past a place like Yankee Candle. My MIL, on the other hand, adores scented things & is constantly giving them to us...whereupon they get promptly regifted or donated. So I guess I'm overly sensitive to sending my partner something that they might find repellent :-). In my excitement I missed the caveat of no food. Which eliminates the concern about food allergies. But it's still good to know for future swaps! Nina

Sorry Mindstrong, you don't know what you are talking about---but I do. The majority of the "big dogs" use Canon. LOL!!!! What "big dogs" do you know? Apparently, they are not as big as you think they are. LOL!! Many National Geographic photographers still shoot with FILM cameras, which are much different than DIGITAL cameras--and they shoot in chrome. And, the ones who shoot digital, shoot with Canon. The archival aspects of the present digital process prevent many photographers from using digital when they don't have astringent deadlines. Sad to say, but, National Geographic photographers are not" cutting edge" by any means. Most are very traditional, which means, NIKON. No "trash talking" here. When the staffs of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe and every other major newspaper use Canon, you know Canons are the best, otherwise, why would they risk shooting with inferior hardware, like the horrible Nikon system? The difference between Nikons and Canon is well documented in professional circles. Ask any "real" professional and they will tell you that Nikon sold-out to the amateur ranks many years ago, that Canons are the best. Most magazine photographers are contract photographers or freelancers and 80 percent of them use Canon. I know what I'm talking about: I'm one of them. Canon digitals are the best in the consumer market too!

I like the wet zone well away form the path from door to toilet to sink, because wet socks are nasty. But maybe you and yours are better at keeping the wet in the shower than my family members are I am keeping the layout as it is in the top version. :) So wet socks shouldn't be an issue. It's an excellent point though and one I hadn't thought of but now that you mention it, I have to agree with you. In our neck of the woods, code requires shower doors to have an outswing. They can swing in but must have the outswing. The door will swing both ways. Not sure what code is in our neck of the woods.

I just bought a Canon G9. It's a 12.something Mega Pixel. It cost more than I had planned to spend, but I gathered all the change we had laying around in bowls, jars, etc. and it was over $300! So I just added a couple hundred more and I felt like I was only spending the $200 for the camera and that worked for me. LOL
I really like then Canon products and this camera is great. I haven't spent much time playing with it.

I also dropped my camera, a Panasonic Lumix, which I really liked. It still works, but doesn't zoom anymore.
It was a 6 megapixel and 6X optical zoom.
I bought a Canon Powershot A590 IS 8 megapixels and 4 optical zoom. It's ok, but I liked my Panasonic better.

I want a larger optical zoom for distance shots. Canon has some great ones out now, with 12x optical zoom. I have read that a 6 megapixel is quite enough,if not more, than the average person needs. So I am looking at the Canon Powershot S5 IS 8MP, with 12x optical zoom. They run about $325.

Phyllis, the price on might drop, the big electronics show is soon, and if Canon comes out with a replacement, the price on existing models drop.

I have a couple of Canon DSLRs (D30 and 10D) but last year I bought a Canon S5 IS and I absolutely love it. It feels like something between a pocket camera and an SLR. It takes an 8.something megapixal photo. It has a built in image stabilizer which helps make photos sharper if you are at all 'shakey'. The photos are great. The only things I don't like about it is that the lens cover doesn't stay on well and it's not very fast (causing some action shots to be missed). The photos are great though, and I'd definitely buy it again. Actually, I have :-) I bought them for my son and daughter in law and my daughter and son in law for Christmas last year. And we're buying one for my youngest step-daughter for Christmas this year.

This is the same cameral that Phyllis_MN talked about. And I find one listed online as low as $269.

I wouldn't buy from them, though. I always check online stores I'm not familiar with at Resellerratings.com. Here are the user reviews on them.

I have the Canon S3 (pretty much the same as S5) - it is great. Tough camera too. It also works great as a video camera.

Joan, you may be right on that one. I didn't take time to check them out, was just trying to show that there are different prices out there.

Iowagirl has a good option as well. If the S5 is too pricy, Canon still has the S3 and (I think) the S2 available. These are earlier versions of the same camera. It was photos from an S2 that actually got me looking at these cameras. One of the guys in the bird forum posts the most gorgeous photos, all taken with an S2 IS. Yep, Phyllis, but there are lots of great internet sites. I've bought from Newegg.com, B&H photo, etc.

My birthday camera this year was a Canon Powershot SD1100 IS, little purse cam with image stabilization and it takes great pics!

I am terribly lucky...I have dropped my camera so many times it's a wonder it still works!!!
It's a kodak easy share, came with a printer dock. It's over 5 years old.

Mush, I'm looking to buy another Canon S5 IS for my stepdaughter for Christmas. Just now did the search and B&H Photo has it for $289. I've bought from B&H many times. They are a reputable dealer. So if you were considering this one now might be a good time.

Mine's an Olympus. It's at the other house, so I can't give you the exact model, but it's a tiny little thing, 8 pix. and takes the most amazing pictures. Olympus has such a great name for optical equipment, I won't buy anything else. Had an Ol. 35 ml SLR for years--with all the lenses, etc, and it never let me down, so when it came time to go digital, I couldn't see buying anything else. Worth a couple of extra $$$ for a good product like that.
