First post after losing Mom

You may remember Mom died October 15 after her heart attack and bypass surgery. This is my first chance to check in since then... I was obviously busy with funeral, then I got very sick with bronichitis. I have totally messed up my Internet connection and limited to dialup speeds (or worse). I can get emails without attachments (or very small ones) but surfing is nearly out of the question. I'm in town today for an oil change and glad to be using the dealer's high speed connection to check in.

THANK YOU to the KTers who sent emails and cards after Mom died. Your support meant more to me than you'll ever know.

Losing Mom was devastating for me and for our family. It is without a doubt the hardest thing I've endured in my life...and the hardest thing I will ever have to face. I love my DH of 20 years, but honestly---nothing could ever hurt this bad...

Anyway, I'm gradually getting back into work, and we family members are trying to prop each other up emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Please keep us in your prayers.

((((Rita)))) Losing one's mother is one of the most devastating things anyone will ever go through. You've been in my thoughts a lot.
I hope you feel better physically soon and you get your computer fixed where you can come be with us here at KT. Take care of yourself and have a good cry anytime you feel the need for one.

Hi, I just came to this forum when I saw your post Kevin and I am so sorry for you loss. I am new to this part of the home forum. I just wanted to say that I lost my mother 10 months ago. I have been thinking about her alot today especially and that's why I came here. She was having a series of minny strokes that finally weakened her to the point that she could not go on. She had 7 children. She was closest to my youngest brother. I had told him that week when she was in the hospital and before the doctors knew that she would not be with us much longer, that I felt she needed us to speak to her and tell her that we would be OK and that not to worry. Well on Sunday just 7 days after we brought her to the hospital they took her out of ICU to a regular room so we could stay over night with her, my baby brother was in there with her when he decided to tell her not to worry that we would be OK, well she shed and tear and just a minute later she was gone. I regret that I was not there, but I was happy that my brother was and spoke to her and reassured her. The one thing I realize as I have almost grown children myself is that you never stop worrying about your children. I think it was difficult for her to let go as for us. I am going to try to find out some info on the grieving process, it seems to come in spurts for me. With everything else going on in life kids, work, etc., lately things just seems to be a blurr. Most days are better than others. I guess it just takes time to heal and longer sometimes than others. I had lost my dad 20 years ago this June and I am 37 years old, my oldest brother is 50. We are all handling it differently. Most of my brothers, I have 5, seem to pretty tough about it, but they shouldn't feel that they have to be that way. Her 1 year anniversary is coming up and I have been thinking about that alot. Anyway hang in there and be thankful of all of the beautiful memories that you have. Bless you, Christina

I'm going to try to ignore the things TOS is writing about my situation b/c I know she is just trying to cause problems. I truly don't understand why you would try to do that in a place where you should offer support and encouragement, but whatever... But I must say...of course I realize that the destruction of a family is not humorous. I was just trying to be a little lighthearted. Their marriage has been over for years. As I've written several times now, my former husband passed away. After his death I found out he had several "girlfriends" on the side. You think that didn't destroy me??? Believe me, I could write a book about destruction. Anyway... Thank you, Kathline, for your response to my post. I will admit wholeheartedly that my attitude needs to change, and that's one reason I am here. I'm hoping that by hearing other stories of struggles, listening to what others have been through, it will help me to face my own problems with a better heart. Yes, I admit that I wrote that I don't like Sarah right now. She has lied to me and about me SO much that it makes me physically ill. She has stolen money, clothes, make-up and other belongings from me and 2 of my children, she has called my 12 year old disabled child "retard" right to his face on several occasions. And it's not 1 or 2 times...this is consistent behavior. It is VERY HARD to like someone when they constantly hurt you. Sarah knows nothing about the fact that we have looked into residential treatment for her. Nothing! We have also NEVER told her that we don't want her, although her own mother has several times. At one point a few months ago, Sarah was mad at dh and me for grounding her for something and she announced, "I want to go live with mommy." She called her mother and directly there on the phone her monther said, "nope, you can't come live here. You cause too many problems and I don't want you." I felt horrible for Sarah, at the same time understanding how bm felt (b/c Sarah, if possible, often acts worse at her mom's house than she does here). We have to check her bags when she comes home on Sunday nights from her mom's house and more often than not, she has stolen something from there. So yes, Sarah is aware that he bm doesn't like her or want her to live with her, but as I said, she knows nothing about us looking at residential homes and I have NEVER said, "I don't like you, Sarah." Now she might get the feeling that I don't, but isn't that something she needs to earn, kind of like my trust. Would you "like" someone that continued to steal and lie from you CONSTANTLY??? I hope I'm not coming across like I just want people to agree with me, b/c I am VERY open to hearing all opinions. And if you think I'm horrible b/c I said I don't like Sarah much right now, it's okay. Believe me, I feel pretty bad myself and I'm trying to change that. I'm just so frustrated in this situation. I'm so sorry about your Mom - and about everyone else going through this. It is so wonderful though to have this Forum to talk about these things. When my DD passed, I didn't even know about "firsts", until someone told me that the anxious feelings I was having at certain times during that first year, was my feeling her loss. I called her a Holiday Baby because she was born on the first of the year of the US bicentennial, and died on the US birthday. I still get anxious around New Year's because I keep thinking I'm supposed to do something for her. Then I end up going to the cemetary on the 2nd. Seems as though I have that, "it wasn't so bad" feeling and can then go do what I have to do. It's been a lot of years now, and with each year, it gets so much better. I meet people like yourself that are still going through the "firsts", and I just feel blessed that I survived that. It is VERY important to continue the traditions - to continue the celebrations. As the years go by, they will tend to become ways to share your Mom's life to the generations that follow. They need to know her and family traditions are a great venue for doing just that. Talking about your Mom amongst the family is an important release as well. Hugs to you as you go through this. Have faith that Mom is still with you, and smiling that the family is still going strong.

I'm not against cook tops or ranges in islands, provided the island is large enough to allow for ample work space on either side of the cook top or range. Your first plan allowed for 24", about 7" more than I currently have on each side of my island cook top. I hate it with a passion because there is so little room to prep and work next to the cook top. It's one of the driving reasons for completely reworking our kitchen (remodel to start soon, yay!). And the pop-up downdraft is a joke. That said, new pop-up downdrafts are much more effective but, as has been pointed out, island venting is more expensive than perimeter venting. So I'm glad to see that your later versions moved the range out of the island and eliminated that odd sink wall jog by bumping the whole wall out. Of the 2 latest plans you posted, I prefer Option 2. There is no zone crossing between clean-up and prep/cooking functions, unlike what will occur in your Option 3. I think Option 2 could be made even better. I moved the sink out of the corner. I'm not sure what you gain by going with a corner sink, other than mirroring the other angled corner. (I have a corner sink under corner windows; I've always been happy with this set-up. The main downside is that it's very difficult to clean behind the sink.) Eliminating these 2 angled corners gains you longer stretches of counter, which is always a plus, IMO. If it's larger or smaller, you'll need to adjust the sink wall accordingly. Putting a range in a corner is a tricky thing to do. You have to design it very carefully to make sure it works, plus it eats up a lot of space on each wall. A 36" cook top will require 51"-54" of space from each wall. Because a range sticks out beyond the counter edge, you'll need wider spacers next to it in order to be able to open cab doors and drawers without bumping into the range. That's not saying it can't be done but you should know the pros and cons of such a set-up. Read the following articles written by Kelly Morisseau, CMKBD, for more information. Plus, there's the awkward placement of a tall thing breaking up stretches of counter. I wouldn't do it.

It's always hard to lose your mother. It's been almost 3 yrs for me, but with the upcoming holidays, I find myself tearing up often.

Lots of love and hugs heading your way, Rita. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss and I think I understand the pain you're feeling, even though I haven't experienced it yet. I try not to think about it, but you don't have that luxury anymore. I am so very sorry.

Hi Rita. I guess the bronchitis is understandable; grief messes up the immune system. But how did you mess up your Internet connection? I can imagine how this is affecting your work, too.

Rita, I am so sorry. I lost a dear friend who was like a second mother to me. Jeanne died October 14 after a heart attack and had a stroke during the bypass surgery.
I hope you get your computer fixed.

I know you pain and loss. It is so much harder when it is unexpected and unprepared. May God bless all of you throughout this difficult time. I believe your Mom is with family that she has not seen in years. Her love for you continues I am sure of that too.
When my father passed away, during our first Christmas I realized he was with us in so many ways. Our habits as a family unit were in part from him. Our spirit together was with him. I can not explain it very well other than having faith that there is much more to come after this journey on earth.
I join everyone in giving you a loving hug anytime you want or need one. Rita you are in my prayers.

Hugs for you Rita. I recently came back on line and I didn't now until now that your dear Mom passed away. I am really sorry for your loss. Losing my Mom was the hardest thing I ever had to face too. Whatever our age we always would like to have our Mom's around.

I know what you have gone through.
I lost my Dad when he was 41, I was 19
then I lost my Mom 8 years ago when she
was just shy of her 61 birthday. To this day,
I miss them both very much. I am an only child
and it can be much of a devasting experience to
go though this by yourself. I included all three of
my children with everything I had to do for my Mom in
her last days with us.
Please take care of yourself, we are here for you
and I sending some thoughts and prayers your way.
