That makes me sick. I wish someone could take a hammer to that man's head then bury him.
If this is in the news I'll bet there will be a lot of takers for that poor dog. I sure hope so.

It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about that.

I just found this newspaper article about her, Dog in Oregon buried alive.

"I went out and I took a hammer and hit her and I thought I'd killed her pretty good," said Hyrum Long, about his 14-year-old dog, Molly, who he said had been suffering.
"When I left, she was not making no noise or movement," he said. "(Otherwise) I would have stayed with her and made sure she was dead.
"A criminal case has been opened and possible charges include aggravated animal abuse.
Carol and Linda-Before you "condemn" this 75 year old man,look at the vocabulary.Obviously not well educated and I would guess in the lower income class.Not that that gives anyone the right to mistreat or be cruel to an animal,but it is obvious to me that this man loved his dog and didn't want to see it suffer.He was doing what he thought best to prevent that.Sorry to be so graphic,but back "in the day" a bullet in the head and yes,even sometimes a blow to the head was the way people took care of sick or dying animals.That is even the way it is done by a lot of people in this day,though discretely as not to be arrested by the animal cops.I'm sorry,but that is just the way it is in some cases.
What seems inhumane to some,is putting an animal out of it's misery in the fastest,least painful and most humane way (in their eyes) possible.I don't think this man thought he was abusing his beloved pet,only putting her out of her misery.
I know,the next argument will be,"If you can't afford vet care for you pet then you shouldn't have a pet."Well how can we judge this man's financial situation or decide for him whether or not he can afford to take the dog to a vet? We can't because we don't know the situation.Maybe when he got the dog he could afford care (she was 14), maybe he lost his job (as is often the case) and his financial status has changed? We just don't know so how can we judge his actions?
One of my biggest peeves is that any time there is anything in the news about someone harming a pet,whether their intentions were good or bad,there's always someone who is ready to hang them up by the ears without even knowing the circumstances.He thought the dog was dead.He even put a pillow under it's head! Does that sound like he was anything but distraught? What a shame for this man to have charges filed on him if all he really was doing was putting his beloved pet out of misery?

I understand what you are saying lilliepad. But it still hurts so bad to think of what that poor dog went through.

Years ago when I was married to the ex, my uncle lived next door. He had a hairless Chihuahua that he loved so much. He even signed Susie's name on cards went he went on vacation. Susie was old and sick and hurting and he couldn't stand it. So he came over and ask my husband if he would come over and shoot poor Susie. My husband told him that he couldn't do that, but he would call the vet to come out and put her to sleep. The vet came to our house right away and Susie had a peaceful going.

I agree Maryanne.I feel sorry for the dog too and I have had similar circumstances happen in my lifetime.I wasn't trying to stir anything up by what I posted,just trying to get others to see things through different eyes and not be so quick to judge.I'm sure someone would have helped this man out but he probably was only thinking of the cost and knowing he couldn't afford it.The thought probably never entered his mind to ask for help.He was only thinking of his poor dog that was suffering and wanted to alleviate that suffering the best way he knew how.I hate that the dog had to suffer unnecessarily only to be euthanized in the end.I just feel sorry for everyone involved.

Lillipad, I thank you for posting as you did; I can see where the man could not afford to have a vet, which could be an unsurmountable sum for him, and he was doing what he thought was humane for his dog. We should not condemn all actions that we see in the "news".

I understand both views but I still feel sick for the dog.

People also need to understand that there are many people that don't believe in spending money on a dog....The line of thought with them is..It is an animal.. meant to be outside and meant to fend for themselves. Take my dad, he loved his dogs, but he was raised at a time where people didn't spend money on shots, heart worms prevention and all that other "stuff". Families back then didn't have money to spend at the vets office.You did good to have money to spend at the grocery store. but His dogs were well loved and taken care of, he didn't abuse them. They were fed and kept warm, but that was it. They lived a long long time..both have now crossed the Rainbow bridge...

My neighbor has never in all of her years of having dogs has only taken 1 of them to the vet...Her children who are younger than I was raised to believe the same thing. Animals don't go to the vets!! I could tell you cruelty/abuse stories from that family that would make you cry...but the pound here isn't interested...

This type of mentality is very common here..I don't know if it is a southern thing or if other areas of the country has this same type of thinking.

Peggy-I feel sorry for the dog too.I hope nobody is thinking because of what I wrote that I am heartless or that I don't understand the other side of the coin as littlebit related about her neighbor.I just feel like this man is being punished for doing what he though was the best he could do for his dog.I don't know,this story may end up to be one of plain cruelty,but until we find out for sure I think we should take Phillis' advice.

Here's an update on that poor dog. I hope those people get the punishment they deserve.

"She was suffering an extreme case of long-term neglect," Otteman said, adding that Molly also had evidence of "a long-term lack of nutrition."

Police said earlier that veterinarians believed Molly hadn't been fed in at least a week prior to her death. When she was examined at necropsy, Molly weighed 56 pounds. Dogs her size typically weigh between 70 and 90 pounds when they are fit, said Lytle.

Lytle said the dog also had "a terrible skin condition - a loss of hair all over its body." .

From the above link, " they thought the dog was dead when they buried it in the yard and went out to dinner." Yeah, so they have money to go out to dinner, but not enough money to euthenize that poor dog. I hope they're prosecuted.

I live a couple towns over from those people. The Dad and the daughter were both arrested for animal neglect and a few other charges. Don't remember what they were. According to our news they both could serve jail time. We also have a great animal shelter, instead of hitting the dog they could have dropped him off and had them put it to sleep for a very small fee.
