Where did the week go

I have had a very busy week with lots and lots of driving and am looking forward to a quiet weekend. Im doing nothing tonight and very little tomorrow. Visiting a nearby church for an indoor yard sale and greek pastry sale Saturday and breakfast out with a friend Sunday. What plans do you have? Satine

I have been somewhere everyday this week and the week is not over! Tomorrow I will do a lot of baking and cooking for a birthday meal for our daughter Amber at our oldest daughter's house. I just canned 7 more quarts of shell out beans. I still have a big basket of those to clean and can. Some days next week are already filled with plans.

Sue, I love reading your posts and hearing about the good times you spend with your family but honestly I am tired just thinking about all the work you do. How in the world do you find the energy to do it all? I just would love to have half the energy you have. Have a wonderful weekend with your family and happy birthday to your daughter. Satine

I face a similar problem whenever we leave home. In the past, any caregiver usually was too concerned the plants would dry out and overwatered. Hopefully, you can convince your gardener that the plants don't have to be soggy wet. This is tricky for a non AV grower. The last few years I have not relied on anyone to water my violets. Granted, we are seldom gone over a week, but this is what I do now. Some of my plants are on wicks or a bottom watering system. . . so no problem. The remaining I bag. I save large plastic bags, some I recall came from pillow purchases and the like. . . just any clear plastic bag that will hold a violet or two. I water & then enclose the plants or plants. Mine are left on the plant stands where they grow. I will move them elsewhere if they would be subjected to direct sunlight. Domed plants are already set up. When I arrive home, the bagged plants are fine & are usually still damp. Sometimes I leave them bagged for another week as they like the spa treatment. I wouldn't stress out too much. Violets are fairly tough and can withstand some abuse. Good luck! Terri

Nestbuilding going on here....babies fledged less than a week ago

Congrats on the fledging and the second nesting. I am very anxious for the fledging of our nestlings, because it will be our first successful fledging. I'm also bummed that we will most likely be on vacation when they fledge: we are leaving for a week starting on the 11th, and today is their 8th or 9th day. I have no idea if they will stick around or not...hopefully I can atleast see them once when we get back just to be sure that they made it and are safe. Maybe mine will fledge late so I get to see them, however it is very doubtful since it is late in the season and I'm providing mealworms; I'm really just hoping for healthy fledglings. I think my TRES will be fledging today or tomorrow. I have been seeing heads poking out and hearing a lot of wing-flapping.

A week after starting this thread I am seeing more damage than I first thought. Agave blue glow is showing some spots on its leaves while the equally beautiful blue green leaves of Yucca pallida are pristine. Tropical guayacan leaves are yellowing, the native variety is not. This big swooping trunk of Arroya sweetwood tree in the front yard is dead ... The upright trunks to the left are okay, Shoe string acacia is dead. While the sun loving drought tolerant Floratam St. Augustine is showing a few green sprigs it remains to be seen whether it will recover quickly and fully. The neighbor's old fashioned St. Augustine protected by oak trees is still green and thick. Satsuma has dropped a few leaves, but will be fine. Ditto Dwarf Barbados cherry shrubs which are usually evergreen. Bob is already removing the dead-to-the-ground Almond verbena trees. I hope they come back. On the upside when scratched the bottom half of the Brazilian orchid tree is still green. The weather is warm and spring like, but dang -- the real spring is still a couple of months away. February is usually our coldest month so there will probably be more freezes. Oh well, the yard is requiring lots of work this year, but life goes on ... :-)

Our broccoli and collards look great. They stand up to freezes well. Last year I planted spigarello lisca broccoli. It doesn't make heads like broccoli, but it made wonderful greens that didn't mind our summer and laughed at bugs. I need to remember to plant it next year. Nancy, I've frozen mushrooms like that, but I thought you bought them frozen, LOL. Funny Rick I know the terms slave cylinder and master cylinder from a truck that sat in our front yard for a long time. Ron kept replacing parts on the clutch. He finally sold the truck. If I remember correctly Totally Tomatoes was a good company that was sold. Not so good since then. Seeds n Such has beefmaster. I think the owner used to own totally tomatoes. (I think this was a Đawn story.) I have purchased from Seeds n such. They're ok, and I think when someone had problems with germination they were quick to resolve the issue. We do buy canned soup, makes a quick lunch. I prefer Progresso brand. They have great tomato Basil soup. And every now and then I like old fashioned Campbell's tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. That brings back memories. (I am very nostalgic today). Moni, native Ginger and what comes from the store are different. I tried to grow grocery store Ginger without success. I did grow it with a start from Companion Plants .https://www.companionplants.com/catalog/ Also turmeric. Turmeric is a beautiful plant. I even had it bloom. I don't know where Danny got his, which I believe he said was native wild ginger. Re: holidays...I've never been much of a Baker. Occasional cookies. But I realized when Travis was 2 he didn't understand the book with cookies coming out of the oven because he'd never seen it. I always felt overwhelmed taking care of kids and house, so Christmas added to my stress. I don't have those stresses now, but memories make me less then than enthusiastic. Of course Christmas morning is good, just not the lead up. Ok, this was done in "colornote" and the keyboard behaved. In Houzz I would type something and it would jump over to before the last letter of the previous word and type the next word there. Sometimes it skipped letters, usually vowels. It did the same when I changed keyboard apps. I changed to Firefox because chrome gave me trouble with Houzz. I suspect it is houzz, but I don't know where to go now. I don't have room for another app. Also, today FB won't let me paste. Instead of the paste option it says auto complete. If I press that, it asks for a password. In a comment. WTF? Enjoy your weekend.

I'd like Sue's energy, too, Satine! Harry's daughter is visiting from California and tomorrow is her last day with us. Sunday we'll take her a little south of here to catch the Red Coach to Miami. Her DH has been down there staying with his mother so his brother and DW could take a few weeks off for a vacation. It's been nice having her with us.

I don't know if it's because I'm getting older, but time seems to go by a lot quicker than it used to. It seemed to drag on forever when I was young--sure wish it's slow down again :-)

When you go for the Greek pastries, would you please eat a baklava for me. I promise I'll take the calories ;-) And maybe have a spanokapita, too. Ooooh, wish I could go with you!

I'm with you, seems it's Sunday, and then 20 minutes later, it's Sat. already.

My week isn't done yet, either. Tomorrow, I have an assignment for the newspaper, and DD is coming down to carve pumpkins and have dinner with us. Sunday--THAT will be my weekend this week, and I fully intend to sit back and relax.

To me this week has seemed to drag by, I just can not get completely over the funk of that darn flu or what ever the heck it was. I guess it wrecked my get up and go because I have no desire to get up and do much of anything these days.
I need an energy infusion!!
After reading Marilyn sue's post I think I need a nap lol
Wish I could still get up and go and have the energy I did a few years ago.

Unfortunately the hubs has to work all weekend so not much will be happening then either.

I am kind like ravencajun--DH had the flu, taking meds and I have been fighting it all week. No appetite, had to go to town today, felt not bad and now feel yucky. Trying to get better so we can at least get the shots.

We are still on vacation and are in Tyler, Texas right now. On Tuesday evening we had dinner with Jaybird who lives in Waco and used to post here. Had a great time with her and her husband.

Yesterday afternoon after we got here and got all set up Jen TX, who used to post here, stopped by and visited for a couple of hours. She brought a delicious cranberry apple cake.

Today we had a get together at Vannie's house with Eva TX, Redfeather and I. The other gals in the area could not make it so will plan on seeing them after Thanksgiving 2013.

The rest of this weekend we will be here in the Tyler area and will go see the oil museum in Kilgore. Will look around for other areas of interest also.

We will be heading back out on the road on Monday morning.

Hope you all have a very enjoyable weekend.
