Yes I would.I have done that for mine when they break one.He may yelp,but it will take away the pain.It hurts when it's broke in half.Just cut it fast so the pain is over with quickly.

Mine did that once. His was bleeding all over the place though - so I had to take him to the vet. Can't remember what the vet did exactly... but he did have to drug my dog to do it.

I think it depends on how far down that the nail is broke.

To control the bleeding, if you have some powdered alum, press a gob of it to the quick or shave some off a stiptic pencil. Baking soda will work, too, but not as well as alum. If it's not bleeding, I would leave it alone unless the broken part is still attached and catching on things. Watch for infection and call the vet tomorrow if you need to.

Sorry! I took it that the nail is broken in half but still attached? If it's broken off completely,just keep an eye on it for infection.I've never had trouble with them after the broken part is off but some might.I even had Miss Emmie break one in half and bleeding,I still cut it off at the break.She yelped but felt much better afterwards.

I once took my dog to the vet to have her nails trimmed, the groomer cut too close and it started to bleed. I felt faint, they made me sit down and called my husband to pick me up. The dog fared better, they applied styptic pencil to stop the bleeding.

Bandit broke a nail once--and bled something fierce. We took him to the vet; she trimmed it and wrapped it. We had to keep the bandages on for several days. She didn't put him to sleep because he is a tough guy--she said he gritted his teeth while she was cutting it; then kissed her when she finished!

I would definitely take him to the vet if it bleeds, or doesn't get better by tomorrow. Hugs to your furbaby!

It's not bleeding, he cracked it, but its not hanging,
you can see where the crack is, I want to cut it but he isn't happy to let me touch the toe at all.
I thought I would let him go til tomorrow to see how it is. He always seems to have a problem with nails. The layers seem to shed off and then they get caught up in things. He is usually pretty good about letting me do his nails. He weighs like 85 lbs and
if he wants the session over , it's over.

85 lbs versus about 12 lbs for Miss Emmie...yeah....when he says it's over I'd imagine it is.When Miss Emmie (Chihuahua) says it's over...I just wrap a towel around her and tell her it's not over til the fat lady sings(That would be me....)

When you do get it trimmed, it will probably bleed some. If you don't have alum, swipe across the cut nail with deodorant. It usually stops the bleeding within a minute or two. Applying pressure around the lower leg with your hand works too if he'll let you hang on that long. Don't tie anything around the leg, just use your hand! You don't want to cut off circulation, just lower the pressure in the paw.

If it's cracked and not hanging you can try trimming it at home. But unless you're very skilled you could make it worse if the crack goes back far enough. Just cutting the tip might offer some relief though. A dog's nails are also very close to the bone and in rare case permanent injury could be done if you have to cut it way back. That's a job for a vet to do.

I would go with the vet. He's in pain. It's not going to get better and it sounds like the dog has a history of bad nails. If the dogs nails frequently shed etc. the best solution is frequent trims and keeping the nails very short. My Rottie has really bad nails that grow quickly. You may want to get all the nails cut back at the vets and then follow up by dremeling the nails. Nails that break and split easily do better if they are ground rather then cut.

I would take him to the vet to have it done as they have this stuff that they can put on immediately when they bleed and it stop it fast.

I hope he's been patched up by now and is no longer having to deal with that painful nail.
