Find A Grave - error

I have been looking around Find A Grave and think I found an error on the posting for one set of my gggrandparents. The printed info gives my gggrandmother's maiden name as the married name of the couple (ex: John Doe married Jane Smith and are listed as John and Jane Smith). Now, a confusion might be because it seems that after my gggrandparents were married, his mother married her father (after respective spouses died). Yikes - very complicated. However, any way to report this other than signing up for the site? I am thinking of taking a trip to the cemeteries (about 5 hours away) and taking a look.

You can click on the name of the person who created the memorial, and see if he or she provides an email address in the profile. If so, you can send an email about this.

Thanks. I had looked around and the info looked old. I did send a message to the email listed. Will let you know. She also posted a pic she id'd as her gggrandmother which would have been my ggggrandmother.

I don't mind that my volunteering ended up benefiting the original owners. FindAGrave was a terrific idea, and they implemented it well. Plus I love doing it. I started volunteering as a gravestone photographer after seeing (on another site) photos of my great-great-grandparents' graves in London. I was touched that someone had taken those photos, and decided to do what I could in my area. Rob, do you mean not many photographs have been taken in the Nashville area? YES, you should volunteer! You'll probably love doing it, just as I do.

I have wanted for a very long time to find the graves of my great great grandfather. I haven't driven far from home for several years but decided to go a couple of weeks ago. I knew the name of the cemetery and I remembered being there when I was 4 years old - 80 now. I even remembered approximately where it was in the cemetery. It was quite a lengthy drive but I found it and very quickly, after arrival. I don't remember being so thrilled about anything for a very long time, if ever. Last week, I tried to find my great grandfather's grave which was still quite a distance for someone who hasn't been driving far. I found it too. Got turned in directions a couple of times but got home safely. Sometime when I know I am going to have a few days of extra time, I want to check out ancestery.com. It is too bad we get interested in genealogy when the older family members are gone and we have no one to ask.

My wife found some nteresting founding history about the Wilkes-Barre area while doing genealogy searches on her family. She is connected to The Hungerfords in colonial Connecticut. At that time, the Wikes-Barre area was known as the Wyoming Valley. Look up the Wyoming War between the Pennites and Yankees, the Pennites were of the Pennsylvania Colony and the Yankees were from Connecticut. A problem arose when the English King granted rights to both groups to occupy the same territory. Friction developed between two colonies when a group of Yankees tried to establish a settlement in the Wyoming Valley. They came to blows. The fracas was inturrupted by the Revolutionary War. Both groups suspended their hostilities to go fight for the Revolution. After that war, there were no more English colonies, many of the grants by the King became void, and any such occupation disputes fell to the newly formed "states" to deal with. The Wyoming War more or less faded away. We never learned about this stuff in school. There is a possibility of graves in that valley that date back to the 1770s.

When I first started genealogy I was thrilled to find bios or other information posted at findagrave. That was before they became a part of ancestry and after that it seemed like the grave memorial became a mini ancestry tree. That's fine with me. Often I find information I am looking for there and don't have to pay the ancestry fee. You do need to bury them in the right cemetery, though! If you know the memorial # of spouse, children, parents, I would add those, too. Often findagrave can fill that in for you if you start it so their computer system can recognize the link. It doesn't matter where other relatives are buried if you have that memorial #. Findagrave is for anyone looking for anyone else. I've found old neighbors and people I hadn't thought about for years, mostly by accident or because of a link on someone else's memorial.

If you don't receive a response you can click on Edit (upper right) on the memorial. Then you'll be taken to a screen where you can choose to email the person directly or contact them through a form. I don't know whether or not you need to be registered to do this, though.

I have a question about Find-a-grave, too -

My uncle is buried in a National Cemetery and I was going to edit his family relationship details, linking him to his parents, but there's no way to do so on his listing. It says his memorial was created from the National Cemetery database. Is that why? And do you know how I can request to be allowed to do so? I can add a photo, but nothing else.

Haven't heard back yet; however, it may not be an email that is checked often. I did make the drive today and am about 25 miles from a grave I want to see. The other graves are within an hours drive and I will be out looking tomorrow.

Chloecat, did you try clicking on Edit? That's the only way I know to make any changes. Edit lets you submit suggested changes to the person who created the memorial.
