First Find a Grave Adventure....

We (all three girls, Alex and I) went on a train ride in Stearns KY today. Then we went to Taylorsville to find my first gravesite for someone on Find A Grave. We weren't able to find it. The lady's name was Mary Goodnight and we searched the entire little cemetery, or so we thought. Alex finally went over to a corner by this old farm fence where a few older looking grave stones were and he found two "Goodnights", but neither was the right person. There were other marked graves nearby, but only with a small number marker.

The grave of Mary was moved according to her family member who was looking for her, after they flooded the area to make Taylorsville Lake and relocated her grave to this cemetery.

Wish I had found her. I thought I'd post some of the pictures I did take. The two Goodnights were a married couple, W.A. and his wife Matilda. Her name was pretty easy to read but I can't read all of the bottom inscription and was wondering if anyone could read it? I think it says something about her being kind and affectionate (and something about "mother") and friend to all? Hers is the older, more worn stone.

I can't read it.
Kath.. next time you go, you should take
some newsprint and a charcoal or soft
leaded pencil and do some rubbings. I wonder
if you did a rubbing of that saying, if you
might be able to understand it.

How are your exchange students?
How is Alex. I've been worried about him.
Is he finding his way in that big old college?

Kat, they're doing good. Alex too, although, he was stuck at UK tonight unable to park at the stadium. There was another stupid game, it was over but trash everywhere and the cops who were left there didn't even know what he was supposed to do. So, I called the UK police and they couldn't tell me what to tell him. His phone had died on him and he had to text me on AIM from his laptop. He was getting frustrated but finally a friend told him where he could park. I found my parent handbook and it says where you could park on game night, but he had already signed off AIM. I hope he doesn't get another ticket.

I've told him weeks ago to ask the parking office specifically but he said he'd been too busy.

I got the NAPA floor dry and repotted everything. My mix was 2.5 parts gravel, 1 part bark, 1 part floor dry and some gypsum. I got my hands on a sifter, so I sifted the bark and the floor dry, though very little got through the insect screen. Since the big jades were in their original peat potting soil for so long and had become so horribly compacted, I went to work on the roots again with my pocket knife. I think the roots are about as free of that old soil as they're going to get. Here's the components. After actually screening the bark, I finally understand what the bark is supposed to look like. Stupid question for you all, how do you mix your mix? I mean, physically, how do you combine all the different components to make an even blend. I probably spent 20 minutes pouring the stuff from one 5 gallon bucket to another and trying to mix it by hand. There's got to be an easier way... Before potting... After potting. I took denise's advice and whacked one jade. It is now sitting in the sun while the others are enjoying some shade. I also decided to give them all a drink for two reasons. 1) They looked thirsty. Their leaves were a little squishy. 2) I read elsewhere that the floor dry absorbs LOTS of moisture and I didn't want it to dry out the roots. Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. I have been keeping plants for about two years, and I am just now starting to try to become knowledgeable about it. Hopefully they will all be happy with their new soil.

When I see a pair of graves marked with plain wood crosses, it makes me wonder about the background strory; There are so many possibilities. i am sure these were put there with loving care. There are some things I can deduce from your photo. These crosses are not old. This is not a desert type area judging from the ground cover and the bushes of the border in the background. Plain wood markers do not last very long in contact with the ground where moisture is available. These crosses are probably are no older than 20 years. Someone has placed memorial flags on them and the flags do not seem to be old. Someone has been mowing this burial ground else it would have been overtaken by tree sprouts and 'pioneer' vegtation. When you looked at other gravestone, did you see any pebbles on top of the stone? In some ethnic groups, it is a custom to place a pebble on the gravestone to indicate that someone was there to pay respects to the occupant. By hte way, it was so nice of you to collect and post these photos. For the most part, the data on the gravestone is the best available in absence of other documents, but there can be errors on the stone. Often, the data came from a grieveing spouse or the nearest relative living nearby. They don't always get it right. It is nice if the data can be verified from at least 2 independent sources. Recently, I got a certified copy of my grandfather's death certificate. His last name was misspelled even though the data was supplied by my dad, and yet the name is properly spelled in his gravestone - go figure.

I have wanted for a very long time to find the graves of my great great grandfather. I haven't driven far from home for several years but decided to go a couple of weeks ago. I knew the name of the cemetery and I remembered being there when I was 4 years old - 80 now. I even remembered approximately where it was in the cemetery. It was quite a lengthy drive but I found it and very quickly, after arrival. I don't remember being so thrilled about anything for a very long time, if ever. Last week, I tried to find my great grandfather's grave which was still quite a distance for someone who hasn't been driving far. I found it too. Got turned in directions a couple of times but got home safely. Sometime when I know I am going to have a few days of extra time, I want to check out ancestery.com. It is too bad we get interested in genealogy when the older family members are gone and we have no one to ask.

Suggest to your mom to point a light toward the plant, to try to get it to bloom. It's difficult to light these huge plants properly though, just because they are so big. Maybe a T5 bulb of appropriate length, suspended vertically - because that is a way to light up the most of the leaves. It's an absolutely gorgeous specimen plant, by the way! > The fertilizer I used said it was okay to use a stronger dose, bi-weekly. Though the more I think about it, consistency might be better. Use 1/2 or even 1/4 the label dose though. They want to sell you lots of fertilizer, so they generally mention the highest dose the plant can take, which is not optimal - especially if your cultural conditions (light, water, temps etc.) are not absolutely perfect, which indoors they generally aren't. > I've been considering repotting it, actually. It is common advice to create a well draining potting medium. Well, you gotta be careful with conventional wisdom. I do not have outside space, but people say it's a whole different ball game - their plants go on all sorts of amazing growth spurts, mostly unimaginable to indoor-only growers.

Kath, congratulations on your first FindAGrave outing!! It's exciting, isn't it?? I didn't have any luck on my first visit for my first assignment. I ended up having to go back to the township and see actual map of the cemetery to find the lot numbers. Anyway, yours looks to be in a beautiful setting and I bet it was a fun outing for all of you. Are you going to continue? I got another assignment last night, for the same cemetery. At least now I know to go and get the information from the township BEFORE heading to the cemetery. LOL

I'm interested in those epitaphs. Could you read any of them? Any words there you could make out?

Murraysmom, I may go back and check on her again. Where do I go, the courthouse? I did let the person know I went to the cemetery and looked and I have some pictures of the place. No response yet from the person. I also am looking at a couple others, although, they both seem to be on the outskirts of our county, quite a ways away. I think I'll find out where they are exactly first before I go hunting again. This cemetery was small but it still took a while for five of us to walk it and check every headstone. We may have missed a few too.

One of them appears to be on private property, on a farm. So, what do you do, just walk up to the house and ask to look in their graveyard?

Oh, and I found the most wonderful peaches on the way home. They were grown by Amish people according to the lady selling them. They were big, juicy and the best peaches I remember having since I lived in AZ and my neighbors brought over two bags from their backyard. It's really beautiful out in that area of KY, so a very pretty drive home.

Kathsgrdn, So what do your exchange students think about searching for dead people's gravestones? I bet they will have an interesting time talking about this adventure!

I don't know. I tried to explain it but not sure they understood why I was doing it. My kids think I'm weird, though...as does my dad and brother. Oh, well...lol.
