I'm clueless, whats this all about? You find graves in you area for people? How did that happen?

Kath, I was wondering how you've been doing with this! Nice pictures of the cemetery, and the lettering on the gravestone looks unusual to me.

Joann, where have you been? LOL We had l-o-n-g threads about FindAGrave and deciphering some lettering on a gravestone I photographed. I'm at work, so I'll let Kath explain further. :-)

I ran across my own headstone on FindaGrave - much to my surprise. Seems a contributor was taking pictures of stones of first husband's family....and shot his.

I also started working with Find a grave and have uploaded pictures of two sets of GGrandparent's stones.

Kath, if you run across any Overstreets, circa 1770-1810. Please let me know.

I see these posts re the old cemeteries and I get so excited. I love them!! How do you go about requesting someone to find a grave for you? Do they always send a picture? I've got ancestors in Warren Co. Ga and Morgan Co. Ga. Is there a form on findagrave.com for this?

vannie....you have to join findagrave.com, then enter your ancestors, giving as much info(full name, birth/death dates as you can. You should provide the name of the cemetery.

If you don't have any idea of where they are buried, I suggest you go to ancestry.com, and look them up there before asking someone to photograph their headstones.

Thanks, but I got that message about they couldn't find him. I have a GGGrandfather that died there in 1856, and his mother died there in 1852. Is Morgan county near Warren Co? My American Revolutionary patriot died in Warren Co. Georgia in 1807, plus a lot of his family members. I think his name is on a granite monument at the court house at the county seat of Warren Co. I'd love to see all that!

I have an assignment, but the cemetery doesn't have a directory. So I'm having a hard time. Think I'll go back this evening and try again.

Dani, I don't know if we mentioned this before, but if you have no idea where in the cemetery the grave might be, see if you can zero in on the area of the cemetery with similar death dates--at least in the same decade. That often helps.

I did read one thread about the headstone no one could read, but when a thread gets too long I just can't read it all.

I'm actually sitting in the parking lot now. I feel like such an intruder when people are 'visiting'. I feel like I'm being rude.

Our cemetery (I just picked up two more assignments) is sectioned into groups; Catholic, Masons, Odd Fellows, and citizens. So I think I'm able to narrow it down a bit.

I have been enjoying my assignments too. I have found about a dozen so far. I've gotten really nice emails from the requestors too. And the cemetery managers have been very nice and helpful. I saw a neat old cemetery today and I'm going to look and see if it's on FindAGrave and if anyone needs any pictures. It's really beautiful here right now and very peaceful walking through the cemeteries. There was one couple that were buried just six rows back from my parents!! That was amazing to find. It's like a big history lesson too.

Success!! I found all three! These are my first assignments, I'm so happy I can help. One is especially pleasing because the requestor had the name spelled wrong. They were looking for a 'Cami' and the name is 'Carri'. She was 31 and died in 1916. I'm learning the hard way how difficult genealogy is when the names are spelled wrong.

I have wanted for a very long time to find the graves of my great great grandfather. I haven't driven far from home for several years but decided to go a couple of weeks ago. I knew the name of the cemetery and I remembered being there when I was 4 years old - 80 now. I even remembered approximately where it was in the cemetery. It was quite a lengthy drive but I found it and very quickly, after arrival. I don't remember being so thrilled about anything for a very long time, if ever. Last week, I tried to find my great grandfather's grave which was still quite a distance for someone who hasn't been driving far. I found it too. Got turned in directions a couple of times but got home safely.

Sometime when I know I am going to have a few days of extra time, I want to check out ancestery.com.

It is too bad we get interested in genealogy when the older family members are gone and we have no one to ask.

I'm glad you are enjoying it! I joined last month too and have found four graves for people so far at different cemeteries. I plan to visit another cemetery tomorrow to find another that someone requested. My daughter has fun going with me! She thinks of it as an adventure.
