I looked up findagrave.com and found my parents' obituaries - I am so happy about this - thanks, coffeemom! It has a picture of my mom and dad, together, that I'd never seen - what a blessing!!!!!

That's great, Kay!! Are you acquainted with the person who added the photo and obituaries? I have turned over management of memorials to relatives of the deceased if they request it.

Coffeemom, I don't know how I feel about it either. The new owner says it will remain a free website, so I hope that's true. If I have to pay to be a volunteer, that would probably put an end to my volunteering. And I would not be happy about that.

I love Find a Grave. It's a massive database and easy to use. I'm a member of Ancestry.com too.

Today I discovered that my dad's cousin, whom I've never met, posted a pix of our great-grandmother's home place. How exciting! The homeplace is in upstate New York, and I'm in Missouri.

I love find a grave and it sounds like nothing much will change. It's probably a good thing because it must really cost to run it for free and now a larger organization with better resources owns it. No sense getting mad at Ancestry. Just think how all those free volunteer hours helped build the site that has now made the previous owner wealthy!

I hope it doesn't go to the paying part of ancestry. I love the site as it is, but it sure could be better in Nashville. Maybe I should volunteer?

I don't mind that my volunteering ended up benefiting the original owners. FindAGrave was a terrific idea, and they implemented it well. Plus I love doing it. I started volunteering as a gravestone photographer after seeing (on another site) photos of my great-great-grandparents' graves in London. I was touched that someone had taken those photos, and decided to do what I could in my area.

Rob, do you mean not many photographs have been taken in the Nashville area? YES, you should volunteer! You'll probably love doing it, just as I do.

Has anyone here been on FindAGrave website today?... when I click on the map of a cemetery, the map only stays on the screen a few seconds. I'm trying to find photo requests in my area and can't get the maps to stay on the screen long enough to even see where they are... wondered if it's my computer or a glitch on FindAGrave today...

I've had the same problem with disappearing maps yesterday and today. It's annoying....

Well.. I'm glad to know it's not my computer. It's still doing the same thing tonight too... I wanted to print off some maps of some rural cemeteries and keep in my car. Most of the time I can access them find on my phone but never know when here's going to be a glitch in phone either...

Oh great! Does thie mean that 'find-a-grave' will become a pay site? If it does, it'll mean that you will have to subscribe to see your own data that you have volunteered.

Susan... I just looked at the discussion boards on Find A Grave and they have been aware of the disappearing maps since the end of September. Taking a while to figure out what the problem is evidentially....

I went looking for a cemetery last week, but failed to find it. Turned out it's not visible from the road. I'll try again. While I was looking, I came upon a different cemetery--not old, so it wasn't as interesting. But I found it curious that all the names were Italian. I learned later that it's called an "Italian Catholic" cemetery. That was new to me.
