Comments (17)I have a doubly literary one for you: My brother named his cockatiel Quasimodo - Quasi for short - after a pigeon of the same name in Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals. That pigeon in turn had been named after the bell-ringer from Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, because it was so ugly when he got it. It was moulting from its baby down and had pin feathers sticking in every direction, just like Quasi when brother got him. My own tiel has a sort of literary name as well: Ljúflingur, which is a metaphor used in poetry to refer to an elf or a lover. It literally means "sweet one"....See MoreNicknames/pet names
Comments (38)Husband had a couple of nicknames for me when we were dating and in early married life but have forgotten what they were. lol He just calls me by my given name these days. He never liked his first name and goes by his middle name, Richard and that's what I call him but his friends all call him Rich, I never have. We do have some nicknames for our kids. Firstborn son, Kody, was called 'sonshine' for several years, ages 2-5, for his happy ways but that faded with time and he's now just Kody and is 52 years old. Middle daughter, Kandra Sue's nicknames are Kankan or Susie and she doesn't mind, celebrating her 50th birthday tomorrow. The funny one is our youngest daughter, Kyla. When just a tiny baby she would make the funniest little squeaking noises and we started calling her 'mouse'. She's now 46 and we still call her 'mouse' and sometimes her husband calls her that as well. Many years ago when she was on the swim team and swimming in some of her first meets at the age of 3-1/2 to 6 we would be yelling 'go mouse go' when she was in her lane and people would look at us like we were nuts. :) BTW she won her first ribbon in the age group 6 and under at the age of a couple months before turning 4, and swam backstroke at that time as she didn't like putting her face in the water. :)...See MoreAny unique/clever ideas for themed baskets?
Comments (27)We had some baskets that got rather large -- like an outdoor grill and the grilling things to go with it, a gift wrap station with paper, bags, scissors, tape, ribbon and gift tags all in one place and some other outdoor fishing/camping things. If kids are in the mix, any kind of electronic game or reader was always bvery popular. Themed dinners -- both a basket with items to make a Mexican or Italian meal ( such as pasta, jarred sauce, breadsticks, things to make a salad, cookies for dessert and such). If these are silent auction baskets, a variation was to have someone host a dinner for a certain number of people or couples and the top bidders in that number (usually 8 or 10) or the first of that number to sign up automatically won -- so a dinner for 10 people paying $25 or $50 per person will have a set yield of $250 or $500. The cook may be the donor or a pro. At the elementary school, the princiap or a favorite teacher might be the cook or honored guest. You'de be amazed how excited kids could get to have ice cream, pizza, donuts or a burger with someone they only see at school. Those were very popular and you can adapt the idea to your group. I would try to think about the upcoming holidays since you are in November. What can you put together than makes Thanksgiving or Christmas easier or that would make for good gifts. If you did the wrapping basket, do more holiday themed tthan birthday and all-occasion. Wreaths, candles, or other decorations might do well. Or holiday themed entertaining....See Moremarilyn_c
