I had a similar experience. I was looking at soething in a store, when I heard a child say "Scuse me." I turned around, there was a three or four year old boy sitting in a shopping cart being pushed by his mother. I moved out of the way and they passed. I ran over to the mother and told her "Your son certainly has good manners." She thanked me and we all smiled.

One does appreciate seeing young folks exhibiting good manners ... as I think that many still do.

But it's the rude, heedless buffoons that attract our attention ... and whose actions we tend to remember.

I am proud of my son. He holds open doors says thank you and your welcome. A few summers ago while on a class trip in Spain he would give up his seat on bus or train to people who were standing obviously needed one. His teacher commented on it to me and said the other students started to do the same. I must have done something right.

Good manners are always appreciated. Let's hope these boys (and girls) can hold on to what they've been taught throughout life -- despite some ignorant peers who will jeer.

I live in a suburban area that has a lot of gang activity. One day I was approaching the entrance to a store just as a teenage boy, maybe 16 was exiting. He looked exactly like what I ~thought~ a gang member should look like: Saggy pants, leather jacket, etc. Well, this boy was already 3 or 4 steps outside the door when I reached to open the door. When he noticed me he turned and RAN back to hold the door for me!
For the rest of that day, I pondered what other stereotypes I had ingrained in my head. This boy's mother must have taught him well. Just goes to show that manners are not dead among our young people.

Dang, I just gave Buddy a bath and he is still damp, and of course he has chosen to lay on the couch. We'd best go outside for a while.

I've had so many examples in the recent weeks, it's hard to remember them. A couple stand out:

Was having lunch one day at a buffet and a little girl, IDK, maybe 9-10? was there with presumably her grandmother? She was a chatty little thing, not boisterous or anything, rather animated and active like healthy kids would be expected to exhibit. There was one annoying thing... talking non-stop with her mouth full of food. I suppose grandma? didn't want to cause trouble, maybe doesn't spend much time with her? IDK. But in virtually every other way she was great. Then the topper, the lady was going to go refill her milk and the little girl goes "Let me get that for you!", went and filled the glass and brought it back, resumed eating and talking and I went if that's the biggest problem, that's not a problem for me.

Was at Aldi the one day and I was unusually stiff and sore, was limping badly and as I walked around my vehicle I had my hand on it to steady myself until I got going. Grabbed the bags from the back to take in with me and a car stops and a young(er) guy, maybe mid-late 20s? goes "Hey buddy, do you need any help?" I was kind of embarrassed (am I getting THAT old??) and said thank you but no, I'm fine and he goes "Are you sure, I'd be glad to give you a hand if you need anything". It really made the day go better.

There's a lot of good kids out there, a lot of great ones too. Sometimes seems rare to see them but when you do, it sure gives a good feeling.

Although I will say, the weather *does* seem to change peoples' moods a lot! :)

Nanny98-Do you have Google toolbar on your computer? There's a spellcheck box there.I found it by accident one day.LOL Comes in handy when I remember to use it.
I have had several "polite" experiences in the last few months and a couple were from teen age boys that looked like gang members!LOL In fact,I even told one not long ago the his mother taught him well and he thanked me.
I only hope I have instilled some manners into my grandchildren.Even the two youngest are taught please and thank you.DH and I find it hard to get out of a chair sometimes and little Rowdy will come over and hold out his hand to "help".

Isn't it nice to be surprised by polite kids!!

My next door neighbors are 13 & 16yrs old boys and EVERY single time I've seen them, it's yes ma'am, no ma'am, how are you ma'am. EVERYtime-no exceptions, and the mom is never there to prompt it. It's almost to the point of annoyance, since I see them a lot, but I tell his mom her boys sure are polite!

We were in Subway one day eating and my DD (2) saw a guy with a mohawk. Slightly scary guy in his 20's, piercings, etc. She immediately starting pointing at his hair and saying "funny" and laughing. I was trying to nicely say we don't point at people and I noticed the guy was looking at us. Except he was making silly, goofy faces at DD and waving to her. So when he walked by he gave her a big smile and I said "she likes your hair" and he laughed and said "Well, she's the only one!" Felt kind of bad that I was surprised at what a nice guy he was!

Doesn't it make one's day to be surprised in a pleasant way, like you people were?
