The Kitchen Table

Please help me come up with the perfect gift!

Dearest best friend, is having a birthday, soon.

BUT, she will be gone to the Cape, then, for several weeks.

We always celebrate birthday lunches, so that is out.

I want to get her something SPECIAL to give her, to open while she is gone. Will give it to her before she leaves, to open on her special day.

I thinking of a special FRIENDSHIP FOREVER gift.

No jewelry, no certificates, clothes, no food related anything. She has all she needs, but I want something special, from me to Her!

Is this too tough? Nah, not for the KT.

I know the KT will come up with something.

And THANKS!!

Do you have a picture of the two of you that you could put in a very special frame? That's all I can think of right now.

My friend, Kathy, gave me a beautiful pillow with a saying about friends on it. I've had friends give me beautiful books on friendship and a framed picture w/ a sweet saying about friends. Once I embroidered a sampler on friends and had it framed for one of my BFFs. Really special stuff!!

my loquat has been a fast-growing tree that is about 10' tall from seed 5-6 years ago. i have a pittosporum tobira that has been pruned into an open, multi-stemmed shrub, standing almost 8' tall now. it is the variegated form and the soft green might combine well with the wall color. there is also 'wheeler's dwarf' if you want to try something smaller. i also think an oakleaf hydrangea could be something to consider. not growing too fast, it could be pruned for height and they grow naturally in the form you are looking for. japanese maples are a good idea. one with yellow fall color would look nice against that wall.

Thuja's and Chamaecyparis thyoides come to mind. Hemlocks of course meet the bill right on the money and there's a wonderful Hemlock called Tsuga mertensiana 'Blue Star' that is available on the internet. It's the best too from my observations of thousands of conifers. It will attain 20 feet tall x three wide at the base in 20 years. There's a C. thyoides cultivar that is very graceful but I know of no-where it is sold. Here is a photo: C. thyoides 'Hopkinson' and foliage: Good luck!

akgirl, I LOVE potatoes in nearly any way possible. However, I also have a huge texture issue with some things and the skin on a microwaved baked potato is one of those things. I'll peel it off and throw it away, but I'm not eating it, it's kind of papery and odd and the potato isn't dry and fluffy, it's gummy and moist. it's actually good when making American Fries, I always peel the skin off and the chunks of potato stay firm/moist enough to stand up to browning in a frying pan. I love those potato skins all covered with cheese, maybe some chili, you know, those wedges of potato? The skins have got to be crispy/crunchy, though. The peels are my favorite part of a baked potato, my youngest daughter used to eat the middle of both of our potatoes (covered in A1 sauce, no less) and I'd eat the skin, buttered with salt and pepper. Well, after living with it for a few days, the Peppered Pecan is growing on me. It is a nice rich color. I think once I pull off all the blue tape and get everything up and installed, pictures and towels hung, etc., it will recede into the background. When you are staring at nothing but a wide expanse of wall, you notice any and every perceived flaw with the color. I absolutely love my satiny cream and cafe au lait shower curtain, though. I finally hung it last night and I don't think it would look as good up against a lighter paint color. I also love the way my pale aqua rugs and towels stand out against the color. Can't wait to find more turquoise and aqua accessories to add. I really am falling in love with aqua for some reason!

Think the Friendship book sounds good. She's an avid reader.
When I moved into condo, she gave me a friend framed picture, that she and I both signed. It's hanging on my kitchen wall.

In addition to whatever you decide, you could name a star after her (or the two of you!). Don't pay for it though - I found this free site (which I haven't used and cannot vouch for) which will let you print out a certificate on your own computer. Might be cute??

How about tickets for you and her for some upcoming event (play or concert?) that she can look forward to when she gets back? Or an overnight somewhere?

One of the most precious gifts I received from a very good friend was a Memory Jar. She got a beautiful jar from Hallmark that says you made a difference in my life along with other sayings. She then wrote memories about things we shared on slips of paper rolled them up and tied them with a bow. She has since passed away and I still like pulling a slip out whenever I miss her. Sometimes I laugh other times get a little weapy. Like the time I had super long hair and we saw in a magazine if you pulled it to the top of your head and cut it straight it would layer it. Yes, I was stupid enough to let her try it. She had to watch all our kids while I went to a beauty shop. Anyway I hope this helps.
