? re Saving a document to a CD

I know some of you will be able to help me.

I have several pages of a document that I have typed up using Word Perfect. I would like to save them to a disc. I have no idea how to do that. I have some new CD-RW discs. Is that what I would use? And is it Rocket Science or is it not too difficult for a beginner?

I ran out of ink and don't want to have to go into town, so thought I would give it a try.

You could go to file "save as" and put it in "My Documents" unless you just want to have it on a disc. Or...if you "do" want it on a disc, do the same file "save as" and from the drop down menu, find your CD drive (mine is F) and follow the prompts from there to put it on the disc.

Loralee, regardless of the software you will eventually settle on, you will need to use multiple DVD's unless you opt for an external hard drive. I suggest that you take an afternoon and use a disk burning application (I can't stand Roxio, more on this later) to back up the files and folders of your choosing. If your DVD writer is capable, use double layered DVD-R's as they are 8.5 GB each. Then, get in the habit of backing up new files to dvd on a regular basis. A real simple solution would be to buy an external USB or Firewire hard drive and copy over your precious files, though I would still make DVD's and put them away. Most, if not all, external drives come with some sort of "back-up" software. As Ravencajun suggests, Trueimage is pretty good. I do not recommend anything by Roxio as their software has proven to conflict with hardware drivers and also creates problems when installed with other software. It doesn't play well with other software. I have made many repairs to friends and family computers that Roxio has caused. There are many other cd/dvd burning software solutions available, I am partial to Nero. I also suggest Total Commander as a file manager. It far exceeds the capability of Windows Explorer and once you use it, you'll never look back. If you get an external hard drive and use total commander, you'll be done in no time at all. Good luck.

Lou, You may be able to recover your file (or an older version) by using an undelete programme. Ideally you should save any recovered file onto another drive. (This prevents the recovered file from overwriting and corrupting the original one if it tries to use the same place on the drive.) As a last resort if you haven't got another drive (or USB thumb drive or CD writer) and, providing that you drive isn't too full, then you could just try to recover it to a temporary folder. There is usually a fair chance that you can recover the file. You are more likely to be able to recover a file if the computer isn't used too often between losing the file and trying to recover it. Hi, fruitjar...I never get that far because after I click the down arrow on the attachment to download it takes me directly to Word to save it as a document instead of displaying it on the screen so I can do a Ctrl P. :) azinoh - FF has worked fine for years for this task (I'll look again at their settings) but I may need to use Adobe Reader as you suggest. I'm trying to avoid the extra steps of saving it somewhere else before I print. See above note to fruitjar re: Word...I was thinking there may be a setting I could change there to have the choice to print rather than to save it to the hard drive first.

If you figure that you're going to need that CDIC back-up, better put your money into a small bank, for several banks have failed and I think that quite a few feel that if a fair-sized bank goes broke, the CDIC till will be bare. Being a gov't. agency, there'd likely be back-up, but that would cause substantial delay, quite likely ... and incur more debt for the U.S. gov't., which has taken on far too much, now. As most of that debt is held abroad, they'll have to start paying higher rates in order to entice lenders to buy their debt instruments ... and have been printing money, with the likelihood that they'll be printing a whole lot more, soon. These mortgage-initiating rascals in recent years sure make a bank robber carrying his loot in a pillowcase look like pretty small potatoes. I remember as a kid, when I learned to ride a bicycle down our country road, wishing that the gravel on the road would become gold ... but it didn't take me long to realize that if it were gold for me, it would be for everyone else, as well ... and that soon it would take more than a pocketful of gold to buy a loaf of bread. How long has it been since the U.S. Dollar was backed by gold? Or silver? Our Dollar - same game. And - when your economy gets a cold ... ours gets pneumonia. What's the expected time-frame when you'll need to use those assets? Almost 10 years ago, when I was 70, I called a financial planner on a phone-in radio show to say that I felt that I should plan to fund my life to age 100, which was six blocks of five years each. Fortunately, I was able to live on somewhat less than my three pensions, and expected to be able to do so for some time - now, 10 years later, same story. But it seemed to me that were I to need some of the assets to live on, I should not eat up all of the first block in the first five years, for it would no longer be there to earn some income for my future needs. In fact, I thought that I should try to avoid using any more than that first block of the six in the first 10 years ... especially considerig that inflation would cause me to need more dollars to live the same lifestyle, a few years down the road. You know - that "inflation" that has shrunk the value of each one of our dollars-in-hand in every year since the late 1930s. And money in the bank is like money-in-hand: each dollar of the principal doesn't grow (but it sure does shrink). Which means that I would not plan to use up 83% of my asset during that first 10 year period, and that a number of financial advisors feel that purchasing stocks for more than a 10-year time horizon makes sense. He said that my plan made a lot of sense, in his view. Short-term, if we fear losing capital, we need to invest in guaranteed dollars ... but long-term, those guaranteed dollar investments, after paying tax, and adding some to principal in order to maintain purchasing power, leave little for the investor. If anything. Now, at 80, I carry about 80% of my assets in equity-based investments. That would make many people have a hairy ... but I feel comfortable with it. Yes, I have some losses, but I have some gains, as well ... and the tax structure here encourages holding equities. A single taxpayer with no income but dividends on Canadian stocks can earn over $46,000. before being required to pay ONE CENT of income tax (and having a low-income spouse with transferrable credits, or gifts to charity or a political campaign, or eligible medical/dental bills over 4.5% [in that case - 3% ordinarily] of net income will push that $46,000.+ tax-free income level even higher). Some time ago, I wrote a thread either here or on "Money Saving Tips", I think, asking which ordinary person gained from inflation, and who loses. When you put your money in the bank, say $10,000., 15 years ago, they guaranteed to pay you back every dollar, in addition to the rent on the money. There's another guarantee, that they never mention - they won't pay you one dollar more, either. And the value of each of those dollars has shrunk, in every one of those 15 years ... as it has every year since the 1930s. That $10,000. would have bought a nice car, 15 years ago ... not now. I figured a while ago, when I could borrow at 6.25%, that most of the time I could come close to breaking even on such a loan, using it to purchase quality stocks. So ... now, when I can borrow for 4.75%, breaking even should be an even greater probability, no? If I'd borrowed your $10,000. from the bank, 15 years ago and paid only the interest in the years since (which I would never recommend, on a consumer loan) .................................................................................................................................................... ................................... when I go into the bank to pay off the loan, now, how much will I need to pay? Yes - $10,000. Which they will give to you, to pay off your CD, if you ask. I gained from inflation, because I paid off the loan in depreciated dollars - you lost, since each of those dollars would buy less than when you loaned it out to the bank, 15 years ago. The only value that your money would ever produce, relative to each of those years, was made right then ... and it was taxed - then ... and, in Canada, it's taxed at top marginal rate. When I used those borrowed dollars to buy quality (retirement type) stocks, and since I came close to breaking even each year on the loan that I made, on average, over the last fifteen years, my investment in stocks grew quite a lot, so now, when I sell them, after paying off the loan, I have quite a lot of money left in my pocket. Which asset was built with your money, not mine. Granted - if the stocks went down in value - I had to find the money somewhere else to pay back to the bank. But, as you know ... they didn't. And, over a time horizon of 10 years or so, they haven't. And a bonus for me - as the value of those quality stocks went up ... so did the annual rate of dividends that they paid. When I bought shares in a Canadian bank 41 years ago for $4.20 or so (also referred to below), they produced annual dividends of about a dime or 12 cents per year: now they pay $3.48. As the number of dollars in a CD doesn't change over the years ... the amount of interest that they produce doesn't change much, either. But - my investment in shares of a Canadian bank have gone from $106. in May, 2007 to just over $62.00 now ... why? They put substantial amounts into those sub-prime U.S. mortgages ... and that "asset-backed commercial paper" ("acid-backed commercial paper"??) that some of the U.S. financial scoundrels were peddling. That now the U.S. government, which can't afford to, is going to partially bail them out of. As some say - socialism for the rich ... private enterprise for the low-level guys who get stuck with the bill ......................... when the rich guys pull a big-time goof (but the rich guys get to keep their previously ill-gotten loot). Remember the savings and loan fiasco of, what, 20 years or so ago? Have you given thought to how much it has cost for the Mccain-Obama campaign over the past couple of years? Where do you figure that money came from? Apart from the costs associated with running for Congress or the Senate, etc. Good wishes for increasing skill in managing your income ... and your assets. ole joyful

I knew I could count on a KTer!

I have it saved in My Documents, but I am supposed to hand it over to another person this evening. Wont they be surprised when I give them a CD!!!

I couldn't believe that it could do it in nano second. I sat there waiting for it to finish and then realized it was finished.

Yes, Moni, the directions were perfect. I had no idea it would be that easy. I always learn on a NEED To KNOW basis, and hadn't needed to know before. Didn't want to risk causing my PC to get upset you know.

Check it on someone else's computer before giving it to her. When I first started doing this, I found that there was a finalizing step when I clicked off of the "save to" step...it comes up when you click off. I don't know your computer, but that's how it is with mine. But...it is "almost" as easy as it was to do with floppy discs

On occasion, I use CDs as storage medium or to tansport files. I use the rewrittables, CD RW, for this chore. it de-complicates things and I don't have to concern myself about closing a file. But first, the CDRW must be formatted as a data disc. These days, most software for CD burners will auto-detect when you have inserted a blank disc, fire up the utiltiy, and ask what type of disc you wish to prepare, music, files or data, and maybe a few other choices. Select "data disc" for a re-writtable CDRW and let it do its thing. A 650 KB disc will require about 5 to 10 minutes to format. With a felt tip, mark the finished disc as formatted, or simply use the letter F, to aid yourself later. I keep several formated disc at my desk.

A formatted data disc is used the same as any other hard drive, floppy, or thumb drive. It is a good idea to eject the disc before shutting down the computer. Press the eject button and the drive should close all files on the disc before ejecting, although I have forgotten to do this at times leaving the disc in the drive without any problem. The only time you may have a problem is if the manual emergency eject feature is used and there are open files on the disc.

Me again.

I guess I'm confused. I put in the CDRW disc, I didn't see anything that asked what type I wanted to do, or about formatting. I just followed Maybee's directions, and saved the documents.

I didn't know about the finalizing step. I googled for info but only find info that says you need to finalize. Doesn't say how to do that.

I still have the disc. What should I do now, or is it too late since I have taken it out?

Open up the cd on your computer and be sure that what you saved is there.

Okay..there is one more step....as you have it now, it will show up on your own computer.

After you do what I said,put it back into your CD drive...go to "my computer" and to your CD drive and you will see it there. Click on it...To the left of that, you will see a little box that says "write these files to CD"

click on that step and a wizard will come up...you name your file and then follow the prompts from there and then it will show up on your friends computer...this is how you finalize it...try it with the one you just did..it's there just waiting to be finalized.

As for formating...most discs you buy are formated. If you don't get a pop up telling you to format, you are fine in that respect..

I have to disagree here. Finalizing is what is done on CD-R disks, I don't recall ever finalizing a CD-RW disk since the purpose of CD-RWs are to be reusable. Finalizing will render the disk unwritable in the future.

CD-RWs can be tricky. They're not always compatible between cd drives. Also, CD-R disks don't always have to be finalized. It depends on the hardware being used. Once a disk is finalized, you cannot add any more to it. However before that you can and in a sense use it like a CD-RW. Again, it's not a clear issue.

Sue, I'm a little unclear on what you're trying to do. Saving it to a disk certainly isn't just because you ran out of ink, at least I HOPE not! Are you trying to have someone else print it for you? If so, you could use a USB "flash" type drive if you or they have one. I think everyone should have a couple of those around anyway. They're the modern day "diskette". Another option is to email the file to get it printed.

Also, if you're looking to have another person print it for you, be sure they have WordPerfect or a conversion program. Or you could print it to a .PDF and then they could open that if they have a program that will open .PDFs.

Back to saving it onto CD. If you have XP or Vista, you should be able to just drag and drop it onto the icon for your CD writer drive, or click the save and save it to that drive. It should walk you through writing it to the disk. Once written, I'd suggest you rename the file on the drive, for instance rename it from "document.wpd" to "document1.wpd", then try to open the document on the CD. The reason for renaming the original file is if it was just a link, it would open the file on the drive rather than on the disk and this would be a double check. You could then name the original file back to the original name if you desired. HOWEVER, again, this does not guarantee that the disk will be readable on another machine. Things have improved over the years, but right now, CDRW is a relatively "old" technology and not being developed.

BTW, jemdandy's comments are good to help make it more likely to be read on different machines.

I did start to put a document on a disc because I ran out of ink. Here's the Reader's Digest Version of what happened. We have a monthly newsletter here at the Retirement Community and I had written an article about how I found this place. I needed to get it to the editor by the 10th. It would then go to the (professional) printer. It ended up being about 5000 words, and I ran out of ink when I was printing it off. I got the bright idea that I would put it on a disc. . . ..and thereby hangs this tale.

In the past I had thought about getting a thumb drive, but just never did. I had some CDs so off I go thinking I would learn something new. I always use WordPerfect, but now I guess that might have been a problem, although since the printer is a local business they probably can handle whatever they get.

I did a lot of web searching during this time and I learned something else. My pc is a HP Media Center, WINXP SP2. On one site I read that with that machine I can burn a cd and it will just do whatever needs to be done.

In the interest of time, I went to WalMart and got the ink cartridge, and now it is printed and in the hands of the editor. Thank goodness!

I'm saving this whole thread and someday I'll try again and actually learn how to burn a CD, or better yet, get a couple thumb drives. I miss those old "floppies."

So you didn't thoroughly confuse me, I started out that way!

Oh, just a tip for future reference: If you're saving a document like this for someone else to use and if you're not sure what type of software they have, use File/SAVE AS and save it as either a text file or as a rich text files (.RTF extension). They should be able to open that on most any machine then.

The "Conversations" side is a good spot for a reunion. I check that occasionally too but admittedly not too often.

OK, my best tip is my best advice: Back up important items OFTEN!! What to back up? Something that would impact you tremendously if your computer was stolen tonight. I've had two computers stolen from me and the one time they even took my backup tapes! So secure those backups too. They're as valuable as the data on them. For some, not much, for some, their life!

It's part of the big two rules of computer life. 1) Never spam; and 2) Always back up!
